He will. Simply we need another striker. We are very 'thin' in that department.

I don’t condone the throwing in any way, but I note the following:Hedontplayforyou wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 5:20 pmAbsolutely pathetic behaviour throwing objects at other fans. Behave or **** off home. Burnley fan or not it’s unacceptable. Grow up.
As for the match , shite first half and some real quality second half. Zaroury finish was fantastic .
A. Birmingham City didn’t care when their fans were lobbing lighters and coins at us on Wednesday night!
B. Sunderland are daft for putting away fans above home fans. They are complicit in the problem.

I wasn't happy at half time either but I coud see us coming back if we got Barnes off and played with pace and said as much to my daughter. I didn't see us winning though. Cracking second half.

Indeed Sunderland are complicit. Just like Newcastle, the reason they do it is to kill the atmosphere from the away fans. I don't understand how either of them get away with it.box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 5:48 pmI don’t condone the throwing in any way, but I note the following:

Re: Sunderland vs Burnley Match Thread
I thought it had been made compulsory to allow at least some away fans to be pitch-side? It’s really unfair and I can’t understand how they and the Geordies get away with it either. Anyway, don’t need to worry about killing the atmosphere in that stadium, their fans were crap today.dougcollins wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 6:13 pmIndeed Sunderland are complicit. Been driving all afternoon, last I heard it was 2-0 down at half time…
What have I missed?

Reading this thread, just wow… some fans are fickle aren’t they.

I think he got all 4 against Norwich, Ted MacDougal got 3 for them , I think.
He didn't get them in that Charlton match.
We'd positioned ourselves behind the goal on the Beehole, for a quick exit at 1-4. What a last 10mins.
This 2nd half will live long in the memory as well. It was game over at half-time, We'd been awful up till then.

I feel sorry to ask this as he's been a great servant over the year's.
But what does Ashley offer? He doesn't fit in this current system, and I doubt he would even be much effective in the old system as he seems to have deteriorated alot in the last year.
I love Barnes for his service and good times, but football is fickle and keeps moving forward. Alot of the times this season when he's been on the pitch he looks like a passenger, not all down to himself.. I genuinely don't think this system suits him.

I think VK may look at the opposition and see their defence is weak in the air. So he decides to play Barnes.

Like the way Tella made it his ball for the first goal. Not sure Barnes in the same situation would have made the THB knock back, HIS ball. With Costelloe getting a hatrick recently he may have been a better starting option. The more Barnes features, sadly the more slating he will get and we dont want to remember him from these appearances. The game has moved on too much for him

Barnes being good in the air is a myth, I think people see his "agricultural" style and assume he will be, but he isn't. I recall recently that a commentator on a stream said something to the effect of "you just get the feeling that if Ashley Barnes was on the field that cross would've ended up in the back of the net" - I'm genuinely struggling to remember any headers he's scored.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 7:26 pmBut Barnes isn't good in the air, so why would that work?

I guess he must've scored with a header at some point, but it will have been a good while back!SammyBoy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 7:45 pmBarnes being good in the air is a myth, I think people see his "agricultural" style and assume he will be, but he isn't. There are some on here though who still don't see how bad he's become. Only on this very thread we've had one poster saying he should be partnered up front with Jay and another who thinks he would still offer more than Costelloe!
Re: Sunderland vs Burnley Match Thread
Barnes in his prime wasn't about being in the air.
He roughed people up, broke up play and got the opposition frustrated.
Give him a decent partner (back in his prime) and he created space for them by being a nuisance and peeing off opposition defenders. I'd say he was better at opening space for others than good in the air.

I think they get around it by saying it would be too difficult to change the current arrangements
Basically they get away with it because they didn't design the stadiums / new stands with any foresight
I have no sympathy, and would enforce the change. Difficult or not

Can anyone actually remember a header scored by Barnes? Racking my brains but drawing a blank, there must be one somewhere?
Re: Sunderland vs Burnley Match Thread
VK got it spot on today ... Barnes up front in the 1st half ... & gift em 2 goals ... let em think ee are sh*t ... lull em into a false sense of security ... then in the 2nd half ... WHAM SLAM BAM ... hit em hard & where it hurts ... bring on the artillery ... dazzle em with skill and guile ... bish bash bosh ... 4 goals and thank you very much and good night ... The mans a bloody genius

The first six or seven pages of this thread.....comedy gold...a game lasts 90 mins..stick with it boys
Re: Sunderland vs Burnley Match Thread
At least after today we know now that when Rodriguez needs a rest, we can play Tella up front and he'll look very tidy.
Barnes mustn't play for us again.
Dervisoglu was obviously a last minute "just recruit a body" type signing, and VK doesn't seem to want to play him.

Yes, I can't remember who against but I'm fairly sure it was a far post header from a Charlie Taylor cross.
BTW, I've just watched his "favourite" 5 goals on youtube... no headers.

Good to see the resident bunch of Victor Meldrew's had us wrote-off at 2-0 down. Some of you should try going to an actual football match once in a while. You might learn that not all games are over at HT.

Watch the first goal back, the lad sent him the eyes, he looked left but then shot right it was very clever, it was almost a penalty nothing he could of done.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat Oct 22, 2022 4:01 pmHe dived the wrong way for the first goal, like he did at Watford.
For the 2nd he let a shot in from 10 yards that was very close to him.
He just hasn't got any goalkeeper instincts in him.
2nd goal you try and stop something that's almost at your feet with a split second to get down or move your foot this is much harder than having to dive, honestly some people are clueless

Stop watching Match of the day for your football cliches, there's no such thing in football as giving someone the eyes. He gambled and got it wrong.
The 2nd goal, Pope let one of them in trying to get down with his big frame. So then he practised very hard on making saves with his feet like De gea. It worked wonders for him. Let's hope Muric does the same.
I won't call you clueless as it's just your opinion.

When a player is one on one with the goalkeeper – he or she only has the keeper to beat – sometimes the player will look one way but shoot the other way. This means that he is pretending to shoot in one direction but actually goes a different way – he or she gives the goalkeeper the eyes.
For example,Liverpool striker Firmino has scored many ‘no-look goals’. To give the keeper the eyes is similar in that the forward will look one way and then fool the keeper by placing the ball in a different part of the goal. To give the keeper the eyes.
Bayern Munich defender Joshua Kimmich scored at the near post against Real Madrid keeper Keylor Navas – he gave the keeper the eyes to beat him at his near post.
I won't call you clueless as its just your opinion
