Oh Burnley is wonderful….
Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
"There's a particular chant where it talks about how wonderful the town or city is, because it's full of female body parts," she says. "To a lot of men, that would just seem like a harmless bit of banter.
"But actually, when you're a woman and you hear a lot of men chanting something that basically reduces you to a list of sexualized body parts, it feels quite intimidating."

Definitely "full of", not "for". Official handbook says as much.Cheshireclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 10:30 amI always thought the words were ‘it’s full of……..’and then we begin the list.

(But yeah, I agree it's a bit cringe.)
Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
I absolutely hate that chant, when I go on with family and that pipes up I just want it to finish, not sure how to explain it to the grandkids, not sure how someone can justify singing it to their female relations.

Another one of those that needs dropping, haven't sang that for about 15 years
Football is no longer predominantly males on the concourse

Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
Great idea. Win-win as it demonstrates male allyship and makes the chant more unique and amusing in a self-deprecating way.
If only we knew someone 'in charge of chants' that wasn't a complete tool.

I like the Burnley is wonderful sentiment. It took me years to work out the middle bit!
Any Jack Walker song is sick and disrespectful to the Walker family. Mr Walker did his bit for his home town club, when they really needed it. His memory deserves better.
How would we react to a Barry Kilby song like that?

Like many of his time Jack Walker’s second team was Burnley. My Uncle Harold (deceased old family friend) used to go to matches with Jack and George Walker… Jack was Rovers, George supported Burnley. They used to do the Turf one week and Deadwood the week after. As a small child we had lunch with the (Jack) Walkers when they had the farm in Blackburn and Jack loved that I supported And could talk at length about Burnley (years before he bought Rovers).IanMcL wrote: ↑Fri Dec 23, 2022 11:23 amI like the Burnley is wonderful sentiment. Exactly Bosscat. Both towns recognise B'tards as an affectionate 'rival' name and expect it as a badge of honour, in a way, that another town still has that commitment to the historic adversary tradition, much deeper than football but also, united as comrades in war.
Fierce rivalry is fine. Not the bile towards individuals.

My great friend David (a Claret through and through who sadly passed away in 2014) used to take his 2 Children to Football, Mike his son (my best man back in 95 sadly also passed nowelwaclaret wrote: ↑Fri Dec 23, 2022 11:31 amLike many of his time Jack Walker’s second team was Burnley. To keep the peace they had season tickets for The Turf and Ewood, so went to matches at both (alternate weeks etc) back in the 70's when they were kids.
Mike hated it, and Kathryn too, but it was the only way David would take them to Football, so they tolerated it for him.
When Kathryn left home for Uni (then out to Cyprus to live) David got just the Burnley ticket and when Mike came home from Uni he also had a season ticket (and prompted me to start watching Football again) so I started travelling with them.

I’ve never liked that song, though must admit to joining in for a few years when I was a lot younger Even though back then I thought it was a bit sh*t. I don’t sing it at all now and can’t say I have for at least a decade, possibly a lot longer. It’s cringy and a song for teens and chavs.
I much prefer “Oh when the Clarets, go marching’ in”, which is what we sang until around 1990 anyway.

‘When the Clarets Go Marching In’ is a much better fit. North East Lancashire has always been non-conformist (and with very strong Methodist tradition). Although written in America, ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ was both Methodist (American) and adopted early first by the Salvation Army’s William Booth.Claretforever wrote: ↑Fri Dec 23, 2022 12:15 pmI’ve never liked that song, though must admit to joining in for a few years when I was a lot younger Even though back then I thought it was a bit sh*t. Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
I've mentioned this before. A total embarrassment not only to the town but thousands of us that attend matches.willsclarets wrote: ↑Sun Aug 21, 2022 10:26 amThis song is so cringeworthy, I wish we’d drop it. 50 year old men, especially, singing “for t*ts, fa**y and clarets is beyond pathetic. Nearly took my young daughter on yesterday, glad I didn’t. I accept you’re always going to get bad language in songs and as part of emotions running high it’s unreasonable to expect a “golly!” when something exciting happens.
But this song just feels so antiquated and sad, as well as the obvious fact that many of the fans we have are women and girls. Time for a new song.
Also I may add insulting to the memory of the finest player Ive ever seen in Claret and Blue. Ralph Coates.
For those under 60:-
Ralphy Coates was the one that was wonderful, he wasn't full of tits and fanny but had health go and vigour.

Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
I tell my 10 year old grandson off if I hear him swear.Even though he here's it everywhere especially on games and like someone said people have no regards of what they say in front of any one including women and kids.He sings along to no nay never though I tell him not to say the substitute word for Bburn.I took him to Utd and when I dropped him back off at his Mum's the morning after he proceeded to tell her about his experience of his first away game then started singing about Mason Greenwood of which he had heard without knowing what was meant well I think that

Re: Oh Burnley is wonderful….
Oh to live in a 'woke' world.
Or maybe just accept that the world isn't fair or right and proper at this time but will eventually move on from it's current un PC problematic life. Songs like these belong to our heritage, which was solid working class rough and 'in yer face'. The fact that the rivalry with Ba**ards has historically been full of hatred and violence (the two towns even chose different sides in the Civil War, for example) means that there aren't going to any "Oh, Blackburn, isn't very nice, but has some lovely people!" chants in the near future as so many of you would seem to want.
I told my son, when I first started taking him to games, and later my grandchildren that what they hear at football grounds is NOT for use anywhere else. To pretend they haven't heard other kids already using these words is ignoring reality!

Wouldn’t it be ‘woke’ to not want your grandchild to swear - therefore making you woke - or are we just making definitions up as we go along now?
