Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
I was there - travelled over from Uni in Bristol.
I have it in my mind that the attendance was 80,800 and it was the biggest crowd at Wembley all season, including the FA Cup final. Even if that turns out to be incorrect, I won't be changing my version of the story after all these years.
On the train on the way back to Bristol I bumped into Steve (no idea what his surname was), the barman at my halls of residence in Bristol and had a few beers with him. He went on to become the groundsman at the San Siro in a fairly radical career change!

Stanley might be having a rather mixed season of a Wembley appearance and relegation to League 2, if they dont string a few wins together.

Must be a sign of age when nobody has mentioned our epic League Cup Semi-Final against Swindon Town in 1968.
Swindon were in the Third Division and had already claimed victory over Blackburn, Coventry and Derby amongst others. They won 2-1 at the Turf in the first leg but we managed to reverse the result in the second leg. Replays were the order of the day back then with Swindon already having needed several to navigate through the rounds. The Hawthorns was the neutral venue and following extra time, Swindon knocked us out 3-2.
As a footnote they went on to defeat Arsenal in the Final 3-1, again needing extra time.

Didn’t a certain future burnley legend score a couple of goals against us for Swindon ?JohnMac wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 11:24 amMust be a sign of age when nobody has mentioned our epic League Cup Semi-Final against Swindon Town in 1968.

Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
The Sherpa Van final at Wembley was incredible. I have already mentioned on another thread that we travelled down on one of the bog standard BCN buses and all of the weirdness that brought on the trip. But remembering that only one year previously we very nearly got relegated from the 4th division in the Orient game and here we were now, half of Wembley decked out in claret and blue. Incredible.
Good luck to Stanley, Hope they can get there you.

Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
And they used just 16 players all season, two of whom managed just 3 games between them. 14 players essentially, 10 of whom played 52 games or more.JohnMac wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 11:24 amMust be a sign of age when nobody has mentioned our epic League Cup Semi-Final against Swindon Town in 1968.

Any modern player with that workload would be moaning about it! Sports science must have been so much better in those days.

I think its more that the standard of football is much higher now and you could not maintain that high standard without the big squads and resting of players.dsr wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 11:41 amAnd they used just 16 players all season, two of whom managed just 3 games between them. 14 players essentially, 10 of whom played 52 games or more.

If Burnley played this season with only 14 players available im pretty certain we wouldn't be at the top of the league

On 24may 1988 England played Colombia at Wembley with a crowd of about 25,700.I was in London on a course so went to the match.
On 29 May 1988 Burnley played Wolves in Sherpa Van Trophy final with a crowd of over 80,000.I missed that game as I was on holiday.I know which game I would rather have gone to.

Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
I think the fun fact Bossman is thinking of is that there were more fans on Burnley v Wolves then there were on the 88 Cup Final between Everton and Liverpool (officially anyway).
This was because there were more safety restrictions put in for this match reducing the capacity on the back of Hillsborough as I think Rowls referenced earlier in this thread

Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
I’ve been to watch them once or twice about 15 years ago and couldn’t get in to it, I’ve just no interest in them or their results, possibly because I don’t know one Accy fan to talk football with.

Which cup was it when a very confused looking David Eyres won a bike for being man of the match?

Good point, I had it in my head that it was a higher attendance than the 89 cup final but that cant be right cos as you point out they were a year apartSilkyskills1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 4:43 pmHillsborough was 1989. 1988 Cup Final was Liverpool v Wimbledon.

Think it was actually the England v Scotland match the week before which (according to Google) attracted 70,480.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 2:40 pmI think the fun fact Bossman is thinking of is that there were more fans on Burnley v Wolves then there were on the 88 Cup Final between Everton and Liverpool (officially anyway).

Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
I somehow imagined a memory that we had more on than the Everton v Liverpool final on a technicality because they had a reduced capacity but even checking the records it looks like the 89 cup final had more on than our 88 match as well so I have made a hat-trick of errors.
I think my original post on this thread is more factually correct than that last one of mine

I think the question of which of your posts is more factually correct, is akin to the question of which Blackburn Rovers player is most popular among Burnley fans. A very, very low score will win the prize.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 5:41 pmI somehow imagined a memory that we had more on than the Everton v Liverpool final on a technicality because they had a reduced capacity but even checking the records it looks like the 89 cup final had more on than our 88 match as well so I have made a hat-trick of errors.

Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
Definitely a vague memory I would suggest.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 9:37 pmMy first trip to Wembley was in this competition back in the 80's when it was called something stupid like the Milk Cup. Not sure how many people remember it by but despite losing 2-0 to Wolves and being outnumbered by about 3 to 1 by their fans it was a brilliant day.
Good luck to Accrington Stanley and hope some of their young fans get a debut trip to Wembley just like I did back in '87
It was the Sherpa Van Trophy final and we had around 35,000 fans there and Wolves had around 46,000 so not outnumbered as heavily as you thought.
At the time I lived on the outskirts of Shropshire only 20 minutes away from Wolverhampton. I travelled down to Wembley with around a dozen Wolves fans most of them my mates in the back of a large Sherpa Van! On the way home I was gratuitously sprayed with beer for most of the journey by the elated p!ss taking Wanderers. When I got out of that van I stank like Banks’s Brewery!
This match served as a catalyst for two proud old football clubs to gradually return to good times again.

Accrington at home to Bolton on Wednesday night live on Sky and the winners go to Wembley to play Plymouth or Cheltenham who play each other in the other semi final on Tuesday night.

Come on Accy!!!
Re: Accrington Stanley at Wembley?
Stanley now have a fairly solid local following with a lot of younger fans in the area choosing Stanley over Rovers/Burnley these days which as an Accy lad myself I like to think I’d have done if it wasn’t for my Dads influence.
They’ve come a long way from their crowd being made up a lot of Rovers/Burnley fans turning up at the Crown ground for something different when not following their own side away, that’s for sure.

Nope. Most young lads and lasses in Accy support Lancs best team, not hard to work out who that is, look at the table.Accyblue wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 1:30 amStanley now have a fairly solid local following with a lot of younger fans in the area choosing Stanley over Rovers/Burnley these days which as an Accy lad myself I like to think I’d have done if it wasn’t for my Dads influence.

Be fabulous for Accy if they could enjoy a trip to Wembley, not least because Lukas Jensen is currently on loan there.
Also be great if Wade's Cheltenham could make the final.
