Ken Bruce Sacked

Post by basil6345789 » Tue Jan 17, 2023 11:59 am

Is this the last piece in the Radio 2 "cleansing" project. Ken going in March. No more Popmaster Quiz - bah! Suggestions on what his replacement will be?
I daren't say.

I'm not sure you can call that "sacked"

Has he been sacked?
Just heard Ken live on R2 announcing he was moving on but stressed it was entirely his decision.

Said 'new opportunities had come up and after 45 years at the BBC (on and off) had decided time was right to go at the end of March when his current contract expires.

Only a month ago he said he would never leave the BBC unless he was sacked.

But things change and yesterday's priorities are no longer relevant

Oh no! Ken Bruce is a staple of my morning, the radio either goes off or onto Radio 6 when he finishes at 12. I wonder if the BBC have the rights to popmaster, or whether it will go with him? Definitely needs to be some kind of pop trivia segment in the slot.

I mainly listened to Radio 2 whilst in the car in the afternoon. Replacing Steve Wright with the anodyne Scott Mills did it for me. Luckily I happened upon Boom Radio with loads of familiar voices from yesteryear still sounding fine.

I listen to the Popmaster podcast on the drive home every evening. Listen to it when Ken is on holiday and it just isn't the same. Gary Davies just about manages it, Scott Mills is absolutely dreadful. I managed to get on 3 years ago and unfortunately it was GD presenting.

Hope GHR have a Popmaster podcast planned.....

Hope Jeremy Vine is next to leave. Scott Mills is great, I've followed him over from Radio 1. Funny isn't it, age has a lot to say for it because I think who ever they replaced Mills with on Radio 1 is naff. Sara Cox and Liza Tarbuck are the best on 2.

There's a lot of that in it, Pickles.

I don't think it's the whole story but it's certainly a large part.

Mills, for example, has almost entirely dropped songs from the 60s and 70s from his setlist. (I know this because I read about it in the Daily Mail at the weekend.)

There needs to be a nice Goldilocks pace of change. Too slow and things stultify, too much and you alienate the listener base.

Greatest Hits radio has some good DJ’s these days. Simon Mayo, Jayne Middlemiss etc. Tend to listen to it at work these days as opposed to radio 2. Virgin and Absolute aren’t bad either.
As for radio 2, I’d like to see Gary Davies get Ken Bruce’s spot.

Does Scott Mills set the playlist for his show? I'd be surprised if he does. Other than the oldies section, the tracks on Steve Wright's show were a bit more 'modern' and current than the stuff that was on Ken Bruce's show. He even played exclusively dance tracks on the insufferable Serious Jockin' segment.

BBC seem to feel ruffling feathers by asking TV and Radio presenters and probably others, to 're-apply' for their job. That, of course will be with new conditions.

On TV News, Joanna Gosling is leaving.

I will miss all those satin blouses and leather wear!

Sack the BBC. Save Ken and Jo

Part of the radio 2 cull. He’s moved on because he is being replaced and you can bet an inch of your whatsit it was their idea. Anyone who can’t see that is burying their head in the sand. Just because it hasn’t been said doesn’t mean isn’t the case. If it wasn’t in the BBC’s plan, there would be a statement telling us all they did what they could to keep him but in the end he decided to move along for his own good reasons. No doubt whatsoever this move suits the BBC.

In my opinion, no way does Gary Davies replace him. Too old. Too male. Too yesterdays radio 1 man. It will be someone you weren’t expecting, and quite possibly someone from a younger generation. Rylan Clark neal perhaps?

I’d like it to be Richard allinson. But it won’t be him for the same reasons it won’t be Davies. I’d also like to hear more of Liza Tarbuck. Very funny lady and easy to listen to, unlike Zoe Ball who sounds like she should be part of the CFS.

Mayo (good dj) does the drive time show on greatest hits radio, and it’s quite good - just like it was when he was on r2. The BBC decided to change that format for some reason. Anyway, they have a female (really bad) on the breakfast show, and a female (really good) on the drive time show, but there wasn’t really any need to change drive time at all.
Mark goodier also on greatest hits, and now they’ll be getting KB. Good move for them as popmaster is going with him and that’s almost an institution in itself.
Worse thing about greatest hits radio is the same worse thing about absolute. The playlist. It’s far too limited.

The only radio 2 DJ I listen to nowadays. Love his wit. I'm generally in favour of a publicly funded radio/TV service. I think the BBC produces some wonderful programmes. Some of their more populist programmes aren't for me although they bring in large audiences.

I always thought listening to Scott mills was somewhat akin to meditating in a sensory deprivation chamber. The longer you do it the more empty the mind becomes.

I don't listen to Radio 2 so I don't care unfortunately the wife does so I hope it's...nope I still don't care I'll just think of Scott Mills and drift away on a cloud of nothingness.

Can’t they get rid of Z Ball at the same time? Every guest she has is “ the best”. What? Since yesterday. Everything is “fabulous”, “wonderful” etc etc. And I’m sick to death of hearing of her son, her daughter, her dad. ME ME ME. Funny how she never talks about how she slept with her husbands’ best mate. She adores/loves the music/acting of every “celebrity “ that gets a “shout out” on her excuse for a show. 3 hours of absolute drivel every morning from the Beebs top earning female. She needs replacing ASAP. That’s me done now wi Radio 2, won’t even bother saving it on any of my devices. Absolute 80’s, and Greatest Hits Radio here I come.

Spot on..a truly horrendous broadcaster. Don't mind old Ken too much but he does address his audience in the style of a primary school teacher. Scott Mills is, err, just a complete nothing and Sarah Cox appears to have a target audience of yummy-mummies who like "dancing round the kitchen". It's pretty much unlistenable as a station in midweek daytimes now unless Vine's show happens to be discussing something particularly interesting (which is rare).
Personally I still lament the passing of Simon Mayo's show at "Drivetime" which had some intelligent content and decent music.
Listen to Radio 5 or 6 more than 2 and particularly like 5's breakfast and drivetime shows for news/discussion .Chiles is decent on a Friday
morning too.
6 keeps the musical agenda fresh even if the DJs can sound a touch too pleased with themselves, particularly Mary Anne Hobbs !

As for those moaning about the licence fee "tax" its about 50p a day and if you can't derive that value from BBC TV, radio, archive on BBC Sounds and the BBC website content then you cant be trying very hard.

Highly likely.....a truly dismal choice. Has he ever said anything genuinely interesting or witty ?
Liza Tarbuck would be vastly better but doubt she would want the workload. Her Saturday evening show is maybe the least formulaic show on the station and she has great, and eclectic, taste in music.

As long as they don’t get rid of Tony Blackburn on Saturday morning, for those two hours I’m a young teenager again.

Horrendous radio station and Bruce is the worst of the worst with his " stuck in the 70's disco " record collection.
