I Second that motion ...
Re: Nathan Tella
I agree. He won’t start every game but what a fantastic squad player to have. Pace to burn, an excellent presser, endless energy and enthusiasm, and I’ve said before he’s probably the best finisher at the club.
He proper loves it here too.

Re: Nathan Tella
Not convinced how effective he will be at Premier League level where his pace will count for far less. His use of the ball is a bit erratic and he often tries to do too much. The fact that he can’t make the squad of the team sat at the bottom of the PL would support this. But if the price is right, and in the interest of squad stability I’d be more than happy for us to sign him up.

Re: Nathan Tella
I think the longer it goes on, the more he prices himself out of a move in the summer - to us at least.
Transfer fees for players at his age, with his goal return and pace to burn is normally far higher than I can see us spending, even if/when we do get promoted. I can see Southampton wanting £20m. Would we break our transfer record for him as good as I think he is and could be?!

Re: Nathan Tella
The problem with Tella, Maatsen & THB is how much they are likely to cost us. You can imagine all 3 commanding £15m fees.

Re: Nathan Tella
I like Tella, I think he is a great fit for us. But looking at it objectively, yes he has pace and an eye for goal, his first touch can be sublime. Negatives are he cant cross a ball to save his life, and when taking more than one touch he seems to not know what his feet are doing and ends up catching his own feet.
Realistically he is at max a 6 to 7 million signing. Anymore and we will surely have others on our database cheaper to sign. I hope we do sign him and think we won't need to pay over the odds

Re: Nathan Tella
It wasn’t meant as a dig at Tella, more an acknowledgment that the step up is huge, and if Southampton thought he would add to their squad then they’d have recalled him.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 6:56 pmPerhaps not fair. At 23 they loaned him out rather than sell him and were Saints playing him as we do?
I think we can get him if the fee is right.

Re: Nathan Tella
It's often a call as to what the club's relationship is with the player. If the player says 'I really like playing for x and I want to move permanently' the club will sometimes sell at a reduced fee to accommodate the player.
And remove his wages from their books.

Re: Nathan Tella
The other complication is that if (as seems likely) Southampton are relegated they know he'll be an asset to them in the Championship - which might make them less accommodating - whatever Tella himself would prefer to do

Exactly it won't go unnoticed what he's doing here getting us out of this division & he could do the same for them, unless he forces the issue they'll keep him he'll be far too important for them not to.EarbyClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 7:23 pmThe other complication is that if (as seems likely) Southampton are relegated they know he'll be an asset to them in the Championship - which might make them less accommodating - whatever Tella himself would prefer to do

What I like is that when he is 1 on 1 I am confident he will score.

Re: Nathan Tella
True it was a terrific finish last night, so calm when his chances come and he usually sticks them away with a minimum of fuss.Burnley Ace wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:28 pmWhat I like is that when he is 1 on 1 I am confident he will score.
However if Saints are determined to retain him, or they value him at £15m or more then I strongly suspect we'll have other cheaper options in mind.

Re: Nathan Tella
If things continue at the current rate, in May we'll be in the Prem and Southampton will be in the Championship. We can hazard a guess as to where Tella-baby would rather be, and despite them owning the player, we'll hold all the Aces...

Re: Nathan Tella
I'm not sure how you work that out apart from we will likely be in a league higher for a season at least, pound for pound they can probably offer him the same amount of money so it'll boil down to whether he wants to play at a higher level for a season. They'll be favourites for promotion & us the opposite direction which could go anyway. Southampton hold the Aces he's their player the pull of a 1 potential season isn't alot & even then we would have to meet their crazy valuation which isn't a given.Transpennine wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:35 pmIf things continue at the current rate, in May we'll be in the Prem and Southampton will be in the Championship. I dont want Tella permanently love his attitude and his pace but his technical ability and strength show you why he has always struggled in the prem I just dont think he'd be consistent enough.

Re: Nathan Tella
Would be a great squad option in the PL. He can change a game as a sub with his pace and he’s a fantastic finisher, still only 23. It’s an absolute no brainer in my opinion with a 9 man bench in that league. He loves it here, infectious attitude.

Re: Nathan Tella
Happen just as well, Southampton are no mugs & have kept JWP when they could have easily cashed in I think they'd have to offload him upon relegation so with that & parachute payments they'll be no immediate financial urgency, young players like tella will be low cost bounce back.HistoricalClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 11:20 pmI dont want Tella permanently love his attitude and his pace but his technical ability and strength show you why he has always struggled in the prem I just dont think he'd be consistent enough.

Re: Nathan Tella
Lol @ always struggled. He's only 23 and started more games and pkayed more minutes for us this season than he has in the PL for Southampton. Bit early to be writing him off given he's not some late 20s journeyman.HistoricalClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 11:20 pmI dont want Tella permanently love his attitude and his pace but his technical ability and strength show you why he has always struggled in the prem I just dont think he'd be consistent enough.

Re: Nathan Tella
Tella is on pace to be a 13-16 goal championship player come the end of season. Not mentioning his assists.
If Gyökeres costs 15-20m. What will Tella cost?

Not sure, but a lot less than Gyokeres I'd have thought.WiscoClaret wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 6:08 amTella is on pace to be a 13-16 goal championship player come the end of season. Not mentioning his assists.

Re: Nathan Tella
There's much to be liked and not liked about Tella. I love his enthusiasm but don't like his cheating. He often brings energy to the side that can change matches but I (and VK I think) have no idea how to play him to get the best out of him.
He needs some good coaching to deal with all these issues but there's a player there for sure.
