Replay is the best outcome

Post by wrj20 » Sun Jan 29, 2023 8:03 am

This came up on the match thread. Getting a replay on the Turf is a better result than if we’d nicked a last minute winner.

New players need exposure to English football and VK’s methods - Ekdal, Al Dakhil, Foster, Obafemi
Fringe players need a run of games to demonstrate their full ability - Bastien, Churlinov, Twine
Players returning from injury need game time to get match sharp - Vitinho, JBG

A replay at home will give them a decent surface to do this on

The only area of concern is our overstretched CM resources. It would be good to give Cork, Cullen and Brownhill all a rest, but one of them at least may well have to play.

A win would have been the best outcome - I stuggle to understand why anyone would think otherwise - but a replay is no big deal for the reasons you say.

Cork is “resting” as far as the league goes.

A win is always the best outcome but you are quite right in saying it’s a great way to keep the squad involved, get more match fitness and new signings to gel.

I think Ekdal should partner Al-Dakhil in the replay, while we probably will see Foster start up top.

Kompany says that he was happy for a replay for this very reason.

Didn’t actually. Credit goes to HiThere on the match thread who first suggested it half way through the second half. I thought it was a good point worthy of further discussion.

Maybe this is a sign that Vinny reads the match day thread…

I would have thought that this is a drawn game neither team wanted.

Replay probably isn't what either team wanted, however it's better for us than Ipswich.

Home advantage and a decent playing surface should give us the edge, and if the draw throws up a favourable outcome why can't we dream of a long cup run for once.

Worth mentioning we have back to back Saturday - Tuesday games in the league after this replay for a few weeks, so I’d imagine we will have to play a full ‘2nd team’ again (as will they).

That's where the depth of our squad should serve us well though.

In seasons past, it would have been a damn nuisance, but for the reasons stated, not too fussed this time round.

We'll cope with the squad we have.

I'd not thought of it like that. Fair point well made wrj20.

Progressing to the next round would have presented the same opportunity for these players to get some game time. But considering our lofty league position a replay isn’t a big deal.

I was feeling a little bit down, that we couldn't finish them off first time round, but VKs post match interview just blows any blues away. He just wasn't bothered at all by the result. The man is so grounded, he must be a massive inspiration to the players, because he inspires me.
A replay is no bad thing, for all the reasons mentioned above. Let's hope we get a really good draw to help hone the focus.

Yes Tiger it would be good to have a cup run but I think VK would have preferred to put the tie to bed yesterday.

If we do have a cup run -well get to the quarters, at least - the away game at Deadwood would probably be an evening game.

Could be interesting.

Is Obafemi available to play in the replay?
He probably wasn't signed in time to play in the original tie, so does this disqualify him for the replay?
I don't know the answer.

According to Wiki he has only played in the league this season so should be available.

Kind of you to say. Like we've both said if we can give fringe players another game it can be a big plus.

If it’s a week on Tuesday the club should be announcing details soon.Hope they price it right and get a decent crowd on.

I
As far as I know you have to be signed the day before the tie which means he had to be registered two days ago. So, that means he can’t play.

UPDATE:

Checked the rules - it's not the day before but the Friday before, which in this case is the same, and it's by 12 noon. So, to play for us against Ipswich, he must have been registered by Friday, 27th January at noon.
