Following on from Dicky Davies too this week. Just the most recognisable television voice in football for years.

It would be a nice tribute if our media folk could put together a collage of Motty commentaries from Burnley & Huddersfield matches prior to KO on Saturday.

He wasn't the best (that's Barry Davies) but he was surely the most ubiquitous. Very much a legendary broadcaster.

Re: John Motson RIP
One of the best.
He invented 'stats' before it even became a word in the dictionary.
Always calm with his commentary, unlike some of the screeching sycophants of today.
(Guy Mowbray, watch, listen and learn from the master).
RIP Motty.

Re: John Motson RIP
Brian Moore, Gerald Sinstadt and now John Motson… that’s my early football education all gone.
R.I.P. Motty, I will always remember him being interviewed in his study when the football world had forgotten about forth division strugglers Burnley. There in grabbing distance was the A-z of Burnley players.

Re: John Motson RIP
Apparently they did a scientific study on Mottys voice, pitch, tone, pauses, accent, inflections and they concluded , compared to others, it was perfect for sports commentary. Can't argue with that really.

Re: John Motson RIP
John Motson's father was apparently a methodist minister at a church in Potters Bar. He also was a pretty competent squash player and I was told he could play equally well with both hands.

Re: John Motson RIP
Agree that Barry Davies was the better of the 2 ( just ).In their early days, the Beeb alternated them for big games, then decided Motty was the better, and Davies was left picking up the odd football match, but then went on to commentate on lots of major sporting events for the BBC.quoonbeatz wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 11:02 amHe wasn't the best (that's Barry Davies) but he was surely the most ubiquitous.
