Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
Joe seemed to be stuck on 148/149 there and couldn't get the strike. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this session. Hopefully the bowlers can get the right lengths and a bit of movement, maybe a couple of wickets before lunch then go again after the break. .

I think Robinson will like this wicket. Reckon he gets a 5fer this innings.

A 2nd for Jimmy he'll soon be passing Warne at this rate.
Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
Don't know about Warne, I think at this rate he is going to hit the 801 to go top.

Imagine how good he will be when he’s 50!?
Broad going a long quietly, he’s probably going to be at 600 wickets very soon, 572 now, can he catch Kumble in 4th? 43 wickets to go

Crazy to think just 12 months ago Silverwood and Root tried to retire them both.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 7:06 amImagine how good he will be when he’s 50!?

Whilst I understood why they made the decision, it’s criminal to stop your best players playing whilst they’re still at the top of their game.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 7:33 amCrazy to think just 12 months ago Silverwood and Root tried to retire them both.

I should have been putting money on these predictionsQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 11:01 pmThey will declare as soon as one of these gets out (providing Root has his 150).
Then a good chance NZ get bowled out for less than 150.

Although I thought it would be Robinson doing the damage. He seems to have bowled very tight though. Will catch up with the highlights today.

I think it was Strauss that wanted to be seen doing something after the ashes failure.
It will have certainly put 6/12 months on Jimmy's career though. Instead of bowling on the most batting friendly pitches you will see, he was out there in the sun covering radio.

One person who deserves massive credit for Jimmy's longevity is Bumble.
When David Lloyd was England coach he fought like mad for Central contracts, as our fast bowlers were getting burned out in County cricket before rocking up for England.
There was no chance fast bowlers such as Jimmy and Broady were lasting this long if the counties still paid their wages.

Another tremendous day for England ideal preparations ahead of the Ashes.
Win this and it'll be 7 wins on the bounce.

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
After some early resistance, notably by Tim Southee Broad mopped up the tail, NZ 209 all out, and perhaps surprisingly England have enforced the follow on.
No ijoy yet for England as New Zealand's openers build slowly.

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
Not sure I'd have enforced the follow on. Day three is often the best time to bat on a pitch, I'd have been tempted to smash a quick 200 and take a NZ victory out of the equation, leaving them 400 plus to chase.
If they bat well now they could leave England a tricky total to chase..

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
NZ probably had the better of day 3, and their resistance is welcome as England need days like this to show then it won't always be plain sailing.
England still strong favourites to wrap this up tomorrow, but the new ball will be important as batting is clearly becoming easier.
One of the reasons given for Stokes enforcing the follow on is that day 5 could well be a complete washout.

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
With all due respect, why enforce a " follow on " when your two best quicks are 40 & 36, and you then open the bowling with a spinner ?
Why not bat in the same aggressive fashion, having led by 226, and then put them in on a deteriorating pitch with them needing 500+ , with rested bowlers fired up and ready to go !! Sees a bit daft ....

No, but Test cricket isn't supposed be easy and NZ have battled back really well.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 1:20 amNot going to plan seems to be the quote of this test.
There's a reason no teams ever enforce the follow on anymore but he's a very confident captain.
Hopefully we win tomorrow and avoid any bad weather.
But let's be honest, with the lost time to rain, under any other captain this game is a draw.

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
Whatever you think about Stokes enforcing the follow on it's helped set up an exciting last day weather permitting.
Brook gets his 1st test wicket and what a scalp in Williamson, Leach toiled away for his 5 wickets.
England should still win from here the pitch is playing well and it only takes a couple of guys to score quickly for an hour and that target will soon diminish.

Struggling now, we are 86/5 chasing 258 to win. Still 172 needed.
Root still there on 12.

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
Gower blaming Root for the crazy run out, but surely as the ball went behind the wicket it was Brook's call?
As soon as Root set off Brook should have given him a firm "NO", or maybe "WAIT" then "NO"?

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
I hear what you say, but anywhere other than behind square on the leg side is the strikers call. Brook could well have tried to send him back. But he was already a long way down. As great a player as Root is, he is not a good runner between the wickets. But if he steers us to victory it will soon be forgotten.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 10:37 pmGower blaming Root for the crazy run out, but surely as the ball went behind the wicket it was Brook's call?

Re: NZ v Eng 2nd test 9.15 start
We were brought up with behind the wicket was the non strikers call, as he would be running to the danger end and the batsman wouldn't have the best view.
I think they coach it differently these days but it would take some guts to send a senior player like Root back when you're new to the team.
Root is on a mission now to make up for it.

188-5 at Lunch. 90 to win so back in Englands favour.
Root has batted superbly but the ball has been doing all sorts out the rough for the left handers. Jumping up off a length for the seamers.
Stokes has done well to ride it out.
