116 points

Post by Spiral » Sat Jan 21, 2023 9:14 pm

That's our maximum achievable points total as of today, 21st Jan, with 18 games to play. The Championship record is 106 points. If we drop no more than NINE points we become the greatest Championship side EVER with 107 points.

Guess how many points we've dropped in the last 18 games?

NINE POINTS!!!

If we match our form of the last 18 games we'll be the greatest team ever to play in this division.

And we're still improving. We're discovering grit. We're strengthening the squad. We're becoming audacious. Our bench is beyond a joke. Everyone knows the system. We have momentum. Everyone fears us, shows us too much respect. Kompany will not let complacency set in.

WE'RE GONNA ****IN' DO IT, LADS!!! WE'RE GONNA ****IN' DO IT!!!

If we can get to the end of the season would beat the 23, 23 undefeated by 3 😁

Can hear it now

26, 26 undefeated
26, 26 I pray
26, 26 undefeated

There's always motivation to get better. This squad (and I hope fans) are not going to get complacent

Things we can achieve (in order of achievability)

Beating Rovers at ewood (continuing the unbeaten run against them)
Beating PNE and Blackpool
Winning promotion
Winning the title
Going the season unbeaten at home
Going the rest of the season unbeaten (26 games)
Getting 100 points
Beating the 106 point record

But in general, just getting better and better. Tbf we are miles better than the first ten games of the season. This season has the potential to be legendary. We need to play a part like we did last night.

Dropped 13 points in those 10 games. But there are so many things that have been improved on since then that I genuinely can't see how we drop to anything even close to that level between now and the end of the season. 2.5 points per game if you go from match 11 to 28. That's not a fluke, it's fully earned. Beyer coming into the side looking like the best CB in the division, Muric settling down and finding his rhythm, Zaroury and Benson coming into their own, Roberts playing really well again, all things that have improved us since those first 10 games.

Oh, and even if between now and the end of the season on a points per game basis we play as "poorly" (I stress the inverter commas) as those first 10 games, we'd still finish on 92 points if you round down the ppg, just a point behind our title winning season, or match it on 93 points if you round up from 30.6 points to 31 points. So basically, take the ppg return of the first 10, sustain it for 18 games, and we're probably champions anyway, but it seems absurd to think we'll drop off back to the level we were at in the first 10. We're genuinely closer, I think, to breaking the all time championship record than we are to our 2016 title winning season points haul.

Hitting the record points would be a fantastic achievement.

The biggest reason that I can see for is not achieving it is us taking our foot off the gas once we’ve achieved promotion.

Ideally we will keep the momentum to take into next year but there could be all sorts of tweaks to the squad and system played out in preparation for the next season.

Whether we do or don’t break all records, this has been one hell of a season and one we should all be really proud of.

After 23 games I predicted the results of the remaining 23 games and have us to finish on 96 points. We have already won 4 more points than I predicted in games 24 to 28 i.e. 5 wins instead of 3 wins and 2 draws :D :D

And dropped 6 more in the next four games, and only 3 more in the 14 games since.

Early days yet, but I don't think cautious optimism is out of place!

As of today, 72pts on the board, 35 needed to beat the record, 42 available. Those two dropped against Watford mean we're down to 7 points we can afford to drop. So fourteen games left where we can lose one, draw two, win the rest. Eleven wins, two draws, one defeat. This is doable. Even if we mess it up were going to run it mighty close.

BTW, since this thread started we've convincingly beat Norwich away and PNE, won at Luton today (tough away day against a playoff team), and ragged a point against Watford, so roughly about how this would have needed to pan out.

Even with the win today we'll do well to better Reading's record, however a 100 points is definitely within our sights.

I predicted 96 points after 23 games but am 9 points BEHIND my predictions i.e. a total of 105 points.
My remaining predictions include 0 points at Deadwood and only 1 point away to both Reading and Blackpool and 1 point at home to Sheffield United !!

As someone who doesn't gamble could you explain like I'm an idiot why they do that? Is it so other people don't pile even more money on or something?

They do an early payout if you're far enough ahead. Can obviously backfire but it's highly unlikely.

What does the betting firm stand to gain from doing it? Is it just PR, keeping the customers sweet and the like?

B365 pay out on season bets if a team takes a 10 point lead.
In this case it’s nothing to do with PR - its part of the bet offer. Similar to the 2 goal lead payout they offer on matches. An incentive for people to use b365 rather than other firms.

Probably more logical, as far as the points record for the 2nd tier is concerned, to go back to 1988-89 when the number of teams was increased to 24 teams.
The record is still 106 points and if we can beat that it will seem even more impressive!

I can remember the first time I ever saw a Woolworths pick n mix and being allowed by parents to fill up a bag of sweets. I couldn't believe all of the treats on offer. My eyes have probably never truly gone back into their sockets. It's so easy to get greedy and just want more and more.

Watching Burnley since Sheff Utd has been just like that. I can't believe how blessed we are to have this team.

A quick look at the stats shows that if we were to get to 107 points then over the course of a season you have to average 2.32 points per game. We're currently on 2.23

We would need to improve our ratio to 2.58 for the next 12 games if we're to make up the shortfall

Points wise it's 31 points from 36.

Results wise we can only afford any of
- 1 defeat and 1 draw
- 2 draws

Doable but it's a very big ask

We have been averaging 2.63 per game from the 22nd of October after a slow start.

So it is actually inside our trajectory ignoring that slow start.

Very do-able though of course challenging. I tend to agree with Agent Claret, somewhere around 100 and a point or two either side is most likely.

Still on but may be affected by the cup progress. Obviously better to get to a Wembley date or two than beat the record but where there’s hope.

Priority list remains
Promotion
Wembley
Champions
100 points
Record points

Why not want it all?

Tbh I’d rather we won the FA Cup than went up as champions as long as we are promoted. It would also likely prove that we can beat more prem teams to win the cup. It’s over 100 years since we won the cup rather than just a handful since we won the 2nd tier.

Promotion
Champions
Wembley SF appearance
Wembley Final
FA Cup Winners
Beat Bastards again (or worst comes to it, keep up our unbeaten record against them)
Finish season unbeaten (26 games)
Go all season unbeaten at home
100 points
Record points
Think there is 1 more probably bottom of the list:
win all our remaining games

Or if you put that at the top of the list, then we don't need a list any more!

Gonna be tight.

Max is 110. Would be good to go on another ten match winning run!

Too many important players injured to reach 110 , be happy with winning the championship

Aye, it's over I think. You can't set all-time records when you drop points to Blackpool. That's three draws in six league games now. Still amazing to get this far though. A century would be lovely.

I'll be content with cruising to the title which we are.
