I’m not writing him off just yet - however, he was clearly bought with a view on playing in the PL and he’s struggled against League One defenders.
All this talk about his age, moving countries, change of culture, change of tactics and all the info he has to take on board (same with most of our other foreign imports since June)….but does that make him look ponderous, have an awful touch, get shrugged off by defenders etc?
He’s meant to be fast - I haven’t seen him run by anyone yet.
He’s a big lad - I haven’t really seen him use his strength to his advantage.
He’s quite tall but hasn’t been impressive in the air.
His first time passes/lay offs seem to leave the ground instead of fizzing towards his teammate.
He’s not troubled the goalkeeper once yet.
All of the above are just basic parts of a footballers make-up which, regardless of all the new tactics and info he has had to take on board, he should at least be showing glimpses of after an £8/9m outlay.
I hope he comes good…
Not writing him off just yet, then prevail to pretty much write him off.
He has shown glimpses as most rational people on this thread have pointed out.
I'm just glad Kompany is an intelligent football person and sees the bigger picture:
“Loads [they will learn] and you can tell, there’s things not quite coming off. But that’s the last thing I worry about because I can see them in training and they score for fun and if you’ve got the tools, the worrying thing would be if they couldn’t do the running because that’s something I can’t just put that on top.
“The running is there, the attitude is phenomenal, and the rest, we’re patient. If they scored with every touch they had, they wouldn’t be with us, so we’ll try and enjoy the journey because there will be moments as well where they surprise us and we’ve got to give them that time. That’s why we’ve got the senior players as well to take away that pressure.”
