funny how prices skyrocketing bring out good ideas that have been sat there unused for a long time:

That's a really good idea.
Interesting to see on the article about a similar thing to heat/power homes in other countries

I'll take hosting a data centre in my house if it heated it for free.

Seems a win win for everyone.

In the late 80's I worked at a large bank's data centre which had a swimming pool build around the machine room which header the pool water... or that was the theory. The said pool was never used as the unions got involved and vetoed it, as non-centre personal couldn't access it due to it being a secure location.

think there might be good discussions for and against, but I'd come out on the side of unions are a necessary evil, but they're there to combat an older and more evil antagonist, just my 50 cents worth, and I'm done with this discussion now.

It's a good initiative Kate but it requires a heat source conveniently close to a swimming pool.

Welcome news, certainly, but I'm not sure how scalable it is.

There are though, giant office blocks full of servers that could be similarly used? Not sure how efficient it would be to collect the heat from them, but there's possibly some good efficiency savings to be made.

It all boils down to the affordability of such schemes. It's all well and good them being "cheap" with tax-payer subsidies but that's not the same as being genuinely cheap.
