I was thinking that with Boro having a magic number of 12, we would need to "add" 12 to ourselves to overturn it
We would - the magic number appears to be what we need to mathematically finish higher, regardless of GD. So we need 18 to be champions no matter if SU beat us and won their remaining games and ended up with a better GD. Which is right as SU can finish on a maximum of 97 points (currently on 67, with 10 games / 30 available). So we need 18 to finish on 98.

GD won't come into it if we get 12 more points.

Boro can now get a maximum of 91 points.
We're on 80.
4 wins / 12 points get us to 92.
Not quite right as one of the games is against Middlesbrough. If we beat them we won't need the 4 wins.

I'll say it, this thread is far more enjoyable than the equivalent last season !

Reading had 89 points at this stage but then drew their next three games. If we can win our next three we will be on a par with them. It will be interesting if that happens.

Commy, given that you are posting this after the Hull game, I'd say the biggest error is that we have 83 points, not 80.
Surely we only need 3 wins to be promoted i.e. 92 points, Boro can only get 91 points. If we beat them this drops to 1 other win.

I was going off what HiThere said and they said we were on 80 points. I didn't realise.

We’re now as good as 7 wins clear of Boro with 9 games to go.

It’s entirely possible that we already have enough points for promotion.

I've been thinking for the last few games that 85 would see the second spot up. Middlesbrough have to get 21 points to hit that.

Yep. It's based on what you definitely need to finish higher and ignores goal difference.

There could be more damage done today and we're not even playing.

We have probably already been promoted because Boro have an absolutely horrendous April to come and they will drop 9 points, but the magic numbers do help us work out when the title can be won.

15 points to be won by us or lost by them means 3 games at best so it is unlikely to be the Blades on Easter Monday, more likely Reading or Rotherham. Starting to wonder if I’ve messed up by choosing to miss City, Boro and Reading.

A SheffUtd administration could cause mayhem to the play off picture.
Oh the joy of a tunnel of honour at Deadwood. It can only reflect badly on them if they deny us.

What a strange day for results. Middlesbrough the only winners from the play off chasers and they all had winnable games.
WE ARE IN THE PLAY-OFFS.

This weekends fixtures

Luton v Watford
Birmingham v Blackburn
Huddersfield v Middlesbrough
Norwich v Sheffield Utd
West Brom v Millwall

It could leave just 2 teams with positive magic numbers after the weekend

I fancy 5 home wins there, 6 if you include us on the Friday

The odds for 5 home wins would be very high. And reasonably so. Huddersfield beating Middlesbrough? Almost unimaginable.

If/when we beat Sunderland on Fri, we will have played the same number of games as Middlesbrough. We would be 19 points clear of them so they would have to win six and draw one of the eight they have left, and we would have to lose seven out of our eight just for them to catch us. Even if we lose on Fri they would have to win 5 and draw one and us still lose them all. I somehow can't see that happening.

This would be a great day for Lucas Jutkiewicz to unleash the torrent of pent up goals that he's been storing up !

Tonight's result takes 1 point of all these teams.

EDIT: Hmm, that didn't work. I was expected table quoted would appear.

Anyway, we all know how it works.

Burnley win at Reading and anything other than a win for Sheff Utd and the deed will be done. Only 5 more wins after that to beat Reading's total. :)
