Thanks for spoiling my day - one of the worst days I've had watching our club. We were so much better than Newcastle but they damaged our season in 73/74 in the FA Cup, Texaco Cup and then taking a point on the Turf on the final day of the season to keep us out of Europe.

I still bear the mental scars from that day, one devastated kid I was. I remember a big geordie asking me why I was crying as we made our way back to the car…….. I so wanted to see my club play at Wembley. It was quite some wait!!

That day will be with me as a haunting memory, I saw myself on the TV as I was right behind the goal and could see myself and my scarf hanging over the wall, I never want to see that game again.

The first game I remember being genuinely upset.
All made the worse for during the 1970s for most young lads (and possibly grown men too but can’t speak for them) the FA Cup was the biggest football event of the year. Bigger than the league, Europe, the World Cup etc. As a boy FA cup final day was the best day of the year full stop….and we were so close.
For years they used to talk about losing the fa cup semi final as the worst game to lose for players and fans.

Probably not something anyone who wasn’t around at the time can relate to given where the competition sits now in the minds of clubs, fans, TV etc

The Newcastle fans did look splendid on the kop from our end, our coach drove past the outside of that end of the stadium getting us to the ground I think. Seem to recall them singing "ya couldn't sell ya tickets" at us.
As already said- so disappointing to lose on the day, compounded later when they played so badly in the final.
I recall buying a rosette for this game, the last time I ever bought/wore one. I'd already given up the rattle long before that though

I'd always planned to cover the brilliant 1972/73 season on UTC this season on the 50th anniversary but I brought it forward two years to fill in during the lockdown season. I'm intending continuing with it from next season, moving back into the top flight, so dreading the article a year from now.

Went on a coach from Rishton and Harwood which got there late and as we drove past the Kop the coach was pelted with stones and bottles. Then the horrible experience of the Leppings lane enclosure. Squashed tight and a poor view , to cap it off McDonalds two goals! Gutted.Still have nightmares about it!

Absolutely the first time and for some reason no-one has ever explained why we were in the Kop with all those Newcastle fans - as were others . Tickets bought at the Turf! Had to stay at the end while the masses celebrated.

Before my time but interesting how it seems to have pretty much scarred for life every Claret who was there. I don't think there's actually been an equivalent for a lot of us, '86 onwards. Spurs in the League Cup 08/09 maybe, but the match was so good and the season ended on a huge high it's more of a fond memory now.

I was 13 and got one of the special trains to Sheffield.Being on my own I just followed the crowd on to a bus to get to the ground.Stood at the front of the Leppings lane behind the goal.Still upset when I think back about the day of what could’ve been.
Horrendous journey back on the train with people pulling the emergency stop numerous times.Like it’s been said before I think we’d have given Liverpool a better game than Newcastle did in the final.

Nulty and Noble both hit the bar with headers and Casper was denied by a world-class save from McFaul. It was like playing at Newcastle though, with 'howay the lads' echoing around the stadium. I was right in the middle of the Leppings Lane End and it was the most packed area I've ever known at another ground, and that was before the fences at the front and sides. An awful experience.

Totally agree Tony. I hated Macdonald because he scored in all three games if I’m not mistaken. And shouldn’t the Texaco final have been two legs but they made it one because of the cup final AND played it at Newcastle. So pleased when the bar codes got hammered by Liverpool in the final.

He scored both in the semi, the goal in that final league game and one in the Teaxco when they beat us in extra time. It should have been two legs and was reduced to one because of the fixture schedule and so we lost the home game. In the middle of that we did beat them up there in the league.

It was a horrible, horrible day in every respect except I guess for the fact it didn't actually rain. We were outnumbered and outsung (the noise from the other end was absolutely deafening and the loudest I've ever experienced live, despite it being an open terrace!!) , but definitely not outplayed. We were the better team and had several good chances. Our problem besides lady luck deserting us and donning her back and white stripes, was meeting the decent, but pretty average McFaul having the game of his life by some considerable margin and bloody McDonald who's blistering pace (his only real asset) caught us out not just once, but twice on the break when we were attacking. Despite the packed scenes down the other end, the jam on the Leppings Lane terraces was scary, even for someone who was used to The Longside and as a 16 year old who turned up full of hope and expectation convinced we'd definitely win,it's a day I'll remember remember forever as (probably) my most heartbreaking ever watching Burnley.

Not sure if this is the game? My dad told of a game at Hillsborough, I believe against Newcastle, of being a death trap waiting to happen. Long before the 1989 events.

Bought my ticket in the normal way at Burnley, went with about 6 pals, was dismayed when me and another found we had tickets for the kop end,bloody horrible experience, coppers that came into the crowd covered in spittle, nothing to cheer about just kept our heads down, dint want to think about that day.

We beat Leicester at Filbert Street and became the last team to come third in the FA Cup. The Texaco final was a fiasco giving them the advantage plus extra time. The last game at TM hurt more giving what had gone before and denied us a European spot. Has Spike said always disliked them with their Billy Big Bs attitude.

I was 9, we were a far better team than them, the 4-1 at elland rd etc.

I cried on the way out and some Newcastle fan said "never mind son thats football" i think thats the first time i truely understood the compulsion of football matched with the lack of happiness.

I remember supermac dragging Jim Thompson half the length of the pitch.

Ive always thought we were due another go in the Fa Cup but its never happened, it will one day.

On vacation from uni at Oxford. Travelled from Bury with old school mate who has been an ST holder ever since. Couldn’t believe what we saw: so much on top, playing good football, until McDonald’s two breakaways broke our hearts. Still had the last laugh over my Geordie housemate in the Final.

Because the Kop was considerably bigger than the Leppins Lane end we were allocated tickets in there with the Newcastle fans. Hard to believe now that they’d do that but it had also happened in the third round at Oldham.

Spot on. When you look at it in today's climate it was an absolute travesty what the Geordies got away with at Newcastle in the 6th round. Forest were hopelessly let down by weak authorities and it simply ended up as a victory for mob rule.

And when the replayed game was drawn at Goodison, Forest still didn’t get a home game and had to go to Goodison again. I suppose it’s fact that Forest did lose that first game but they were very hard done to.
