I'd be curious to know if any of the detractors on here had actually worked with Ministers or MPs? They work very hard and very long hours, spending days away from their families and being in the public eye constantly receiving abuse and threats. And yes, they make life and death decisions affecting millions of people and the future of this country. While they don't earn a poor wage by any stretch, they earn less in a year than Messi makes in a day. They earn less than around 6 or 7 million people in the UK whose jobs, I'd argue, are much "easier".

I'd say most, but definitely not all, are trying their best to help the country in the way that they think best. Whether you agree with the way they want to achieve that is irrelevant - blame democracy because the people voted the party in.

But when someone dies, especially one who has spent a lot of their life in public service, I'll give them respect for at least trying to make the country better, regardless of whether they were successful or I agree with their politics or not.

I can understand why people may not agree with his politics but the reason many have fallen out with the 'new' left is the nastiness we see displayed here.

Nigel Lawson was a moderate who, as Sleeper says, was one of the majority of politicians, on both sides, who try to make a difference and he inspired much of the economic growth strategy of Tony Blair, another moderate.

This is not the time for the 'never kissed a Tory' crowd to gloat. But it's no surprise as the left wing of the Labour party never fails to let themselves down in this way.

Some of them do meet this description. Unfortunately lots of them do not and if you think that the MPs salary is the only source of income for the majority of MPs then that’s pretty naive. I have met plenty of MPs and people aspiring to be MPs and many of them aspire to be in politics because of the contacts, influence and ‘power” this brings which will often stay with them for a long time after they have stopped being MPs (look at the roles many of them take up after leaving)

The late Peter Pike was closer to your description of an MP than most. Unfortunately our current MP for Burnley and also Kitty Usher (who was even worse) are much closer to what I am talking about. Then you look at the likes of Jenrick, Hancock and many many others and we are talking a whole different level.

Nothing compared with the nastiness on display, every day, by the current and previous Tory governments. I guess one major difference is that the tories have over the last 13 years been able to ensure that their nastiness is in the form of more than simply words.

I didn't agree with Lawson's policies and feel that he and others in Thatcher's cabinet are responsible for many of the ills that have befallen the UK over the last 3-4 decades, reflected perhaps in the prevalent sense of nastiness. I am sure he worked hard though for his estimated £20 million net worth.

Yes, of course there are many attracted by the power and connections and influence that flows around it. Some MPs do well out of it. In recent times it has become a bit of a career choice, with some MPs now having not done very much else other than work in politics or the party their entire lives. So of course there's group think about how that career should pan out, like most professions, to maximise long term financial benefits. I have planned my career working to the same goals; earn more money and increase my earning potential for the future. It doesn't make me evil or bad at my job, or that I've been underhand. For the avoidance of doubt, I'm not an MP!

Of course, some MPs are bad at their job, which is to serve the country to the best of their ability, not to sacrifice that for their career. In my view, Nigel Lawson tried to serve the country and did well out of it in the process.

I think it's fair. It's obviously sympathetic to him but if you acutally read it then you'll know it places numerous criticisms on his actions as well as praise for the many things he got right.

It has some miniscule criticisms designed to give the article an appearance of objectivity.

I think it's futile to ask for 100% respect on a forum when it comes to politicians who were as divisive as Lawson, and I say this as someone who has voted for all of the mainstream parties at one time or another. In fact, you wouldn't get 100% on a right wing leaning forum. Such is politics, and it's naive to think otherwise.

From what I can see you all are on this board, the difference between Rowls and the rest of you though is the fact that he never plays the man. I disagree with all of his politics but I will read his posts because ad hominem is not his thing, unlike many others to whom it is the first port of call. The hypocrisy of many of the self styled “progressives” on here is staggering. They profess to be tolerant of others but are always prepared to stereotype members of a social group whenever it suits, because to them they are fair game. They throw terms such as gammon and boomer in a totally pejorative way because all, middle aged to old aged, white people are all little Englanders. I met him once and I was absolutely stunned at how rotund he was. Far bigger than he came across on the telly. A proper big fat butterball. Good on him for shifting all that.
