Official Player of the Season Vote

Post by RVclaret » Thu Apr 27, 2023 8:05 am

Club has opened the official vote for our player of the season:

https://www.burnleyfootballclub.com/con ... the-season

For me, it's between

Josh Cullen - incredibly consistent, committed and has ran almost every game since the World Cup break

Manuel Benson - not just recency bias, he must have won us 15 points on his own this season, also, just so exciting to watch

Who are you going for?

Cullen for me. He’s been instrumental in everything that we do. One of the best midfield players I’ve seen play for Burnley in the last 25 years (if not the best).

Josh Cullen.

Get the feeling Kompany would have taken him to whichever club he went to last summer. You can imagine him saying in the early days of preseason, "Lads, watch Josh. This is how we're going to play."

Benson, Muric, Roberts, Beyer and Tella also but Cullen is the one.

Tough one. Been so many fantastic contributions.

My favourite player to watch has been Benson. Zaroury was unplayable at times pre-World Cup, but Benson consistently made a difference in the games he featured in.

All of that said, I also enjoy watching Beyer play and he’s been crucial to what we do, not just on the ball, but in often making defending look effortless. He’s also featured far more than Benson, so for that reason I’m going with Beyer.

I too went for Cullen. Mr consistent and we were a much worse team when he didn’t play.

Honourable mention for Beyer who has also been incredible.

Cullen for me

Ultra consistent all season and dictates everything we do.

Notable mentions also for Benson Tella Zaroury Beyer & Muric too but Cullen wins it for me

I voted Tella for his finishing and defence frightening pace that has brought us so many goals this season. It is such a tough decision though.

Same as your two RV - Benson has been my favourite to watch by a mile and crucial to promotion, but I’ve gone for Cullen in the end.

Cullen has been a revelation and an easy 7/8 out of ten pretty much every week. He’s run the show and keeps us ticking - heartbeat of this team.

Cullen for me

A lot of the players my have had “higher up” periods than him, but they have also had “lower down” periods than him.

He has been at a consistent high level all the way through

Went for Beyer. But a difficult call given the performances of the players. Could've easily leaned to Cullen or Tella for example.

It will be interesting to see who gets the players player of the year as well. I'd imagine both votes will be incredibly tight.

I just about went for Cullen in this one.

The fact that you’ve had four different answers in only 12 posts shows what a fantastic squad we have.

Probably Tella for me. We haven’t looked as threatening up front when he’s been missing.

Cullen but can see why you would go Benson or Tella. Do you vote based on the key to how we play or the match winners?

Very tough. Voted for Cullen in the end but was very close between him and Beyer. Honourable mentions too for Tella and Benson who were the others I considered

There are too many to choose from... Tella, Maatson, Harwood-Bellis and Beyer have been phenomenal... but they are loan players. I mean like that.

The old guard in Johan, Cork and Barnes have had great seasons; Barnes, in particular, has had a remarkable season, probably not worthy of player of the year contender but has provided that extra ingredient to the memories to come.

Zaroury has been brilliant, but I think he has been patchy with his form, same with Vitiniho - but I'm nitpicking. Benson has been a brilliant acquisition; Muric has been fun to watch, not had much to do compared to most Burnley goalkeepers in the past.

Cullen has been consistently good, though - he'll be my Player of the Year if I was to vote.

Beyer or Cullen for me for consistency with Benson just behind for his impact.
But personally going for Beyer he's got better and better and can't see him ending up anywhere but City in 2/3 years

Cullen, has had very few games where his standards have dropped, probably our most consistent performer, such an underrated player in our system but not by those that watch him every week.
As others have said, I think Kompany knows how important players like Cullen are in a team, constantly keeping things ticking and showing for the ball.
I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the players vote as well, although I think that might go to Benson or Tella

I voted Cullen but I must admit I nearly went left field and voted Muric. I think like Cullen he sets the template for how we play. Connor Roberts not having a mention yet shows how good others have been.

You could make highly credible arguments for about five of them, which sums up our season. My shortlist would be Beyer, Tella, Benson, Zaroury and, my number one, Cullen. He has been the glue holding everything together - a wonderful passer of the ball, dynamic but with a real bite. The Rovers game at the Turf was where he really moved on to another level. It makes perfect sense now why VK moved so quickly for him.

‪Gone for Tella based on total goal involvements despite playing only two thirds of minutes. We look worse when he doesn’t play - key factor.‬

‪Special award for Benny I reckon with 10 goals from less than a third of available minutes - if he had played every minute he’d have 30 goals from the wing, like a joker in a deck of cards 😳🤣

Mass kudos to a few others though, e.g. Cullen, Muric, THB and Maatsen who are crucial to our possession game. I just feel we have others to slot in if they are out, Tella I feel differently.

Another for Cullen here, he makes us tick

But it could easily be Beyer, who has been magnificent

And right behind them come Zaroury, Benson, Tella, Brownhill, Roberts

As has already been said, you could make an argument for at least all of the above, and probably a couple more as well

We have a seriously good squad and hopefully it will just get better

Hard to choose between Tella and Cullen.

Cullen has been so consistent and makes us tick.

Tella has just pipped him for me. Not as consistent as above but some games he has been completely unplayable.

Got to be between Tella and Cullen ... I went Cullen for his tireless work in midfield running the show ... Tella missed out just slightly ... will be interesting to see the outcome ... but whoever wins will be a deserving recipient in our squad of "The team of the season" 👍🙂👍

Beyer for his fantastic defending but his ball carrying gave us another dimension.
Cullen for match control and always making himself available.
Tella for his goals, smile and shithousery.
Benson for so many magic moments.
I really can't split them and other worthy contenders also.

Voted for Cullen and I’m pleased to see so many other posters agreeing with me and so eloquently describing what he brings to the team. Never seen a player who makes himself so constantly available for the ball. He is a positional genius.
That said Tella and Benson have been incredible and Beyer superb to watch. Zaroury, pre World Cup, was also fantastic . What a season !!!!

Extremely hard vote...

It's between Cullen, Benson, Tella & Beyer for me.

I think going off UTC it would be Cullen but I wouldn't be surprised to see if Tella or Benson win.

For me it's Manuel Benson - he's pulled us out of the gutter numerous times this season when we were either dead and buried or it was a complete stalemate. Match winner

Really torn between Cullen and Beckenbeyer but like many in the end went for Josh Cullen. Interesting that there is only one mention of Josh Brownhill on this thread, a player who was picked in the Championship team of the season...

Think if Brownhill kept up his early season form he'd have been in with a shout. Seemed to be a bit less effective playing further back compared with when he was playing further forward early season

Special mention for Zaroury. Most naturally gifted footballer I’ve seen at Burnley in my lifetime. Hope he can keep developing because he’s a special talent.

If the prize went to ‘who plays with the biggest smile’ that would be Tella, he loves it here.

Muric goalkeeping style has been a revelation to me too, but as many have already mentioned, Cullen has been solid.
