Re: Least favourite Burnley players
There are some good candidates amongst the Bond signings. Two have been mentioned - Whatmore and Gow. Any player that Bond brought in had a thankless task as they were often replacing a crowd favourite.
Roger (no hands) Hansbury. Every mistake was moaned at but the hero he replaced, Alan Stevenson, was well past his best. Hansbury wasn't dreadfull but nor was he the best.
(Limping) Joe Gallagher. On paper a quality signing but clearly a cripple. Played the first game at Hull and that was it. Not his fault but John Lyall's and our club for not spotting the obvious.
Steve Daley. Chased round the world (well the US) by Bond who finally got his man half way through the season, but didn't do anything to justify the effort (except scoring a hattrick in a 3-2 win at Port Vale long after the idea of promotion had gone).
And worst of all, Tommy Hutchison. He had the temerity to replace as captain crowd Martin Dobson. Hard to forgive and then when the crowd got at him he stuck two fingers up at The Longside. But his talent and work finally shone through and we (almost) forgave him.

I was working in the Sparrow Hawk on church street when we signed Joe Gallagher. He was stopping there at the Sparrow when he first arrived at Burnley and he 100% had a limp !! However, my recollection is that he did go on to play quite a lot for us that season (I ain’t checked the stats though so might be wrong)Hipper wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 8:18 amThere are some good candidates amongst the Bond signings. Sparrow Hawk was owned by the Hutchinson Group (nothing to do with Tommy !!) who also ran The Centre Spot at the Turf. So I also worked there behind the bar. I had the “pleasure” of working there on the night John Bond held a Q & A with fans after Bond had just taken the managers job. He was a very charismatic person and you can see why our board was sold that he could be a success especially given his managerial career prior to joining us. Guess he did what many managers used to do in bringing in players he knew from Man City but he took it way to far with signing the likes of Gerry Gow who was clearly finished. We were pretty unlucky with Kevin Reeves though - he was still a quality player and the injury left us in a mess.

Hard to say I hated any players because I’d always want them to succeed.. but off the top of my head , Paul Stewart on loan , John Gayle , most of the squad under waddle, Liam Robinson, Ian Moore, Philiskirk , Shackell (although immense for us it was how he left) Lafferty (bit of a bell end)

I think fans that went to the usual Isle of Man tournament that season noticed his limp immediately. There is some explanation of what was going on in Dave Thomas's book 'A Director's Tale' based on the diaries of Derek Gill.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 9:13 amI was working in the Sparrow Hawk on church street when we signed Joe Gallagher. He played a full season in the 1986-87 season but I guess that we were desperate as he had a four year contract which ended that year. He retired then. I didn't realise he had a loan spell at Halifax that first season:

He just never seemed like a professional footballer... In any way. He had an awkwardness to him. He was crap basically.
I was probably early/mid twenties at the time and remember watching him and thinking if I got back in shape and started playing again there might have been an outside bet of picking up a professional contract myself.. you know... if he could play at championship/premier league level there's hope for us all.
To quote the guy that sits in front of me… “you know when you want a game of football but you’re short of numbers? Really short of numbers? Brian Easton always looked like the kid on Lyndhurst Road, kicking a flat football around on his own, who was dragged in because he was an extra body”

I never took to Kiraly or Grant in goal.
And I wasn't too happy with a few of Waddle's signings either. Stan sorted that out

Did he play a game where he didn't get cramp?jdrobbo wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 8:29 pmTo quote the guy that sits in front of me… “you know when you want a game of football but you’re short of numbers? All I remember when I think of him is cramp at the 30min mark and he's sat down with hands in the air. That's why I mentioned him also.
Scored a belter here though: https://fb.watch/kA-pzAmB4J/
And here he is, in his prime: https://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/n ... 1298578990
In fairness to him, I think he tried when he was with us he just wasn't fit or at the level we needed. I think he's captain at Hamilton too.

I think Wright has usually said nice things about his time at Burnley.RMutt wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 9:07 pmI don’t think I could dislike a player because they weren’t much good. And perhaps dislike is a bit strong but I have always been intrigued by Lee Dixon and Ian Wright. Both quite likeable as pundits but when it comes to Burnley I sense a sort of denial that they were ever here. I know neither were here very long but I’ve never felt they had any fondness for the club. Perhaps it’s an Arsenal thing or perhaps I’ve got it totally wrong?
Lee Dixon was basically rejected by us (well Bond) and there is still a bit of a sour feeling there. I can't really blame him for that - was a baffling decision at the time.

Agreed. Only because of Barnsley away in 1995. Lost 2-0. Kevin Lynch was the ref. Stewart got sent off and 'waved' at the clarets on his departure. Worst thing was, my dad nicked my pie and threw it at him, from the back of that wooden stand.
Waste of a bloody good pie that...

An off game is one thing but pulling on the shirt and taking huge amounts of money from the club when you don’t put in any effort is unacceptable. Stewart is probably the laziest player I’ve ever seen for Burnley followed by Drinkwater and Gascoigne.Transpennine wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 11:59 pmHowever, I've recently heard some interviews with him and he was clearly suffering at the time. I think he was utter trash. Couldn’t take players on. Never passed forward. Couldn’t tackle. Never went in for 50/50s poor in the air. All he did was receive the ball shuffled it to his left peg and pass it to someone 5 yards away sideways or backwards whether they were marked or not.
One of our worst centre mids in recent times.

Re: Least favourite Burnley players
You said that David Jones was vastly over rated and had done nothing ever. What did you expect?
Firstly I don't think anyone has ever over rated him.
And secondly, if you count Burnley out he did plenty before he even got here.
You know he was one of the only midfielders we had fit for virtually the whole of a promotion season?
You know yourself that you're talking b0llocks.

It must have been a very special manager to come 2nd and 1st with such a bad midfielder in his team.
Re: Least favourite Burnley players
What did he do apart from 5 yard negative passes? Overhit corners?
He didn’t score, didn’t assist and didn’t defend… a shirt filler no more than that

Re: Least favourite Burnley players
Amazed there's been no mention of Tony 'kin Hancock.
It's possible that he was a good lad and nice to his mum, which I don't know about but, perhaps sadly, I'm not too keen on players who aren't very good and don't put a shift in. Tony Hancock, at the very pinnacle of his Burney career struggled to get into the category of not very good. Indeed my recollection of him was being absolutely crap. He easily gets into the category of not putting a shift in.
No doubt, he has good points, and so from memory I'll list those that I recall below:
Well that didn't take long

I never slag our players off even iff it seems they are not good enough I'm always 100% behind anyone who plays for our club. But I have to say David Edgar was my least favourite player the reason being I used to go in the Footballers arms in Summerseat and everyone knowing I was a Claret used to take great joy in telling me about his drunken antics around Ramsbottom

Joe Hart wasn’t a bad goalkeeper but I just don’t think it worked with him behind our back four as it did with either Tom Heaton and Nick Pope.

I was really optimistic when we signed him. I just don’t think he was what we needed at the time. He seemed glued to his line, we needed a commanding goalkeeper which he absolutely wasn’t. Fulham away that season was for me where he showed his weakness. When Heaton came back in we were a much better team.

I always thought we wouldn’t have conceded those two Mitrovic goals that day with Heaton or Pope. That’s why it didn’t work with our team, the lack of understanding between him and the defence.colne-claret wrote: ↑Sun May 21, 2023 5:21 pmI was really optimistic when we signed him.
