ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
We've just won our fourth promotion to the Premier League but here's a reminder of the first, fourteen years ago today.

That's a nice read, thought football couldn't get better that day. Things have got better since, however that day was very special, so thanks for reminding me. Must admit I'd forgotten about the red card, probably too busy counting down the minutes.
Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
Brilliant memories! It’s still incredible to me what the last 14 years have brought. I’m of the generation whose life as a Burnley supporter started at the beginning of those 33 years (my first two games were in the 75/76 season but I didn’t start regular attendance until 76/77, just after we’d been relegated) and I’d pretty much resigned myself that any sort of glory days were over for the club and were before my time. My expectations were that after the really bad times of the mid/late 80s we’d found our level and that establishing ourselves in the Championship was as good as it was getting (think of how Preston fans probably look at life). The fact that we’re about to enter our ninth Premier League season 14 years after that great day is beyond my wildest expectations.
Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
Brilliant read, brought it all back from that wonderful day.
Also, the mention of Newcastle v Scunthorpe. It's a funny old game, the former is going to playing in the Champions League next year while the latter will be going to Curzon Ashton and Chorley.

It's incredible thinking about Newcastle and Scunthorpe, more so that Scunthorpe won the game at Glanford Park in the 2009/10 season.

14 years??
We came away from that game thinking we’d achieved the impossible
Who could have predicted that in the next 14 seasons we’d have been have spent over 50% in that league

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
Changed the entire course of the next 14 years for our club. If we hadn't won, things would have been very, very different with the money we owed. Amazing day!

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
I, along with many others who had followed our club through the darkest days of the mid 80s, walked away from Wembley that day thinking we had achieved the impossible. If that was the case, then what we achieved in the mid and latter parts of the 2010 decade under Sean Dyche would be reaching miracle levels. When I walked out of Wembley that day I bumped into Andy Short, who i travelled to a lot of games with in the 80s on Nelson Gasworkers beer bus. That is for every visit to Scunthorpe, Hartlepool, Stockport and all the other 4th division sh!tholes we have travelled to following the Clarets.

I also don't remember any sendings off.....what a day though.
I see Christian Kalvenes was a Sub.......what a buy
Did he ever play for us?....if i remember right, Fergie recommended him to Coyle.

You weren't stood in the joke of a stand in the storms at Blackpool when he scored the winner then ?Taffy on the wing wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 4:26 pmI also don't remember any sendings off.....what a day though.

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
Are you thinking of Eckersley who we got from United after promotion? Promising full-back and Ferguson was fuming at what we paid for him, but he turned out to be nothing special and barely played, if at all.Taffy on the wing wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 4:46 pmPossibly........the brain's not what it used to be.

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
I remember being pushed into Wembley tube station on the way out of the stadium and hearing another Claret shout “that’s no way to treat Premier League fans”. What a day.
Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
Who could forget Michael Duff’s dance? So good to see him making it as a manager.
And who could forget that feeling of disbelief and joy as Wade’s shot hit the back of the net.
I was lucky enough to be at Reading and Wembley. Two joyous days.

Amazing day to top an amazing season. I never thought I’d see us playing top flight football - always hoped of course but never expected it.
Looking back at that squad, which includes my favourite ever Burnley player in Robbie Blake, it’s light years away from what we have had this season.

Only second time I had tears at a football match, first was Orient tears of relief, this game tears of joy. The last few minutes lasted an era.

Thought RB was going to make it two nil at Wembley late in the second half, but was thwarted by a last ditch tackle as he was about to score, would have been fitting for him.

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
I was looking back at some pictures that came up on Facebook memories this morning… can’t describe that feeling.
Sounds so stupid now, but I had a nightmare getting tickets, 5 of the family toning constantly on 8 phones and couldn’t get through. In the end I just decided we would have a big BBQ at home on the day.
Over the next few weeks we managed to get the tickets we needed.
The stupid or crazy thing, I didn’t really go there thinking about the premier league or what winning would mean. 10 mins in and I saw a few SU players diving and suddenly realised we had a chance. My only regret is not enjoying any of the game after Wades goal.
A few tears with my dad at full time. It really hit me when I got to my hotel in Marlow, ordered a beer and asked for sky sports news to be put on the TV… the headline hit me and I sat there smiling and a little more crying.
1 season in this league was always a fantasy.

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
I drove down with my son and my brother. A 30 minute walk to the ground. cans from an off licence. photos on wembley way. Paying over the odds for food in the ground. Felt so amxious all match. Cried at the final whistle. Told my son this was as good as it got (I had to change that the very first home match thanks to Robbie Blake). Got back to the car and listened to 5live telling us that Boyle was going to Celtic (I wish he had). It was a day I treasure as it was the start of an adventure with my son ( now 22 and married) and the last game I went to with my brother ( he doesn't watch Burnley any more)

Re: ARTICLE: The 33 Year Wait is Over
What a brilliant day. I have only ever cried at a football match two occasions; when we managed to beat Orient in 'that match' and then again at the end of this game.
I never thought that I would ever see Burnley in the Premier league, and of course now we will do again, for a fourth promotion. Jay Rodriguez involved in both.
