At a time when social media allows such diverse opinions about specific players, it appears that anyone who has been watching the clarets since the late sixties/early seventies (like me), has Dobbo up there as one of the greatest and classiest players seen wearing the club shirt during the last 60 years. Says an awful lot about him

Jack Taylor? A well respected referee in the day.

Indeed it was Jack Taylor. Very much doubt referees would do that today.

I recall a story by Colin Waldron about the 3-2 win at Spurs in 1973/74 (if I remember this correctly). There was a handball incident in the Burnley penalty area (by Keith Newton I think) and Taylor never gave it. As they were moving away from the incident Taylor asked Waldron if it was a pen. What was he supposed to say. He thought he'd better be honest and so he said 'yes'. A bit later and Taylor awarded Burnley a possibly curious penalty and Waldron said he though the ref may have been confused about the earlier incident and should really having given Spurs a pen.

We usually got a thrashing at White Hart Lane so this result was something special in an amazing start to that season, the first back after winning the Second Division title. We also beat Man City 3-0. Here's hoping we have similar surprises this coming season. :-)

Dobbo also scored on his competitive debut for Burnley- the 2nd goal in a 3-1 Reserve team victory at Hillsborough on the opening day of the 1967/8 season.

Just as an afterthought, it might be of interest to quoonbeatz, it was Ken Palk who was the batsman at that end who scored the four past Dobbo.
That's some memory you've got, Roy!

Loved watching Dobbo play. My old scrapbooks are suffering as all the glue disintegrates and the contents fall away, so it took a while to track down these two pics of Dobbo opening the scoring in a 3-0 FA Cup 3rd round win over Wolves at the Turf in 1970. Watching Dobbo and Casper together in the same team was like watching two ice skaters glide around effortlessly.

Great action pics. Can remember these at the time but so long ago now. Dobson heading past Phil Parkes? Celebrating with Jim Thomson and David Wilson? It was a great win in the cup and we expected similar when Wolves came to Turf a week later. We lost 3-1! 😩

I thought Waldron instead of Wilson?

The second one looks like it would be given as a foul these days if you look where Dobbo's feet are!
