Spoke with a Baggies fan about O'Shea at work today. He's sad to see him go, apparently he's really improved in the past season. Could be a great signing for us.

From Irish journo on Twitter

‘Burnley jump ahead of four English clubs, plus Serie A interest, to sign Ireland intl.

Vincent Kompany driving force behind getting deal done.

Burnley boss believes 24 y/o capable of operating at top 6-8 level of Premier League, & can make him better.’

Interesting

Happy we are signing this lad. Looks the kind of player we might need for the prem. strong defensively but can still pass a ball.

Stats wise he seems to be relatively similar in style to Guehi. Similar passing stats and then defensively they have similar stats in relation to aerial duels, interceptions etc….

If he turns out anything like Geuhi we have a good one on our hands

I would say Beyer is a definite starter but the other spot is up for grabs.

There are plenty of other clubs out there getting the finances in order. Many bargains to be had. I’m sure the club will know who they are.

I think Vinny is very smart and thorough in preparation, and there will be games v certain competition where we play 3 CB's. It will impact our full backs. Fortunately Roberts can play in a back four or a back five. Maatsen is defintely better suited to a back five, should we go for him

The potential signing of Drameh did make me think that.

He seems perfect for the wing back role

Not getting too hung up on early signings but like the idea we are going for a British Championship player. It just feels different to what we might have been thinking and that cannot be a bad thing because as fans we are usually unqualified to know what fits.

Presume O’Shea signing ends any interest on Coulibaly, unless there are some surprises with the system or outgoings in store.

It was always going to be the case that we would be linked to loads of players across the UK and Europe this summer. Lazy and or speculative journo's hyping stories because of Burnley and VK having a fantastic Championship season. Agents hyping stories to get their players improved deals or to raise there transfer fees. Stories linked because we had so many loan players that we would "need" or want to make permanent and stories linked to how well VK's incomings did so well. Stories speculating that we made lots of cash from player sales last season, the list goes on.

Probably a lot of the links were therefor were dubious or fake. There are probably players we are interested in that have remained quiet until the last moment. There may be some we were genuinely interested in we can't or won't afford. There will be others who are not interested in joining us. All this is what makes the transfer window frustrating, exciting, hopes rising and hopes dashed. We will have to wait awhile before things start to click into place and there will be many surprises. All on here will get excited about being linked with players but they only count once there in through the door. This is obvious I know but I think we forget that VK did say very early on he won't break the bank and there may be less money available than some speculate. Despite some of the more recent names being linked having been less spectacular I remain optimistic that VK will still bring in some quality players. For me Tella is a must, someone to be an upgrade on Cork, a decent left back, another right back, another attacking midfielder/ winger and a goal scoring striker are the key incomings we need most.

O’Shea has also played quite a lot at right full back so could even be being brought in to cover the role that Roberts plays. Either way, he would still provide good cover for that position as well as centre half.

I know someone who knows someone who knows Dawson and he thought he was coming the first time in 2014.
We played a pre-season friendly at Deepdale, and Dawson was so near to signing for us he was in the stand watching the game. Didn't see him myself so I can't vouch for it, but a mate of mine said he was sat quite close to him.

A West Brom supporting mate of mine says that he's a good player that has come up through the academy. He is, or has been he says, rather injury prone.

They have to sell because their parachute payments have finished and the books need balancing.

I’m sure I read Alan Nixon earlier suggesting that the player had a release clause or ‘fixed fee’ in his his contract. Sounds like we have just triggered that.

Think O Shea can be a good signing. In VK we trust.

Craig Dawson's lad is at the same school as mine (along with Corky's / JBG / Brady et al) so we talk pretty often, has always been keen on signing for the Clarets on a few occasions but it's not meant to be. Even just before he joined West Ham. Decent fella, as they all are tbf.

If O 'Shea comes off then what has pleased me is how quiet it was kept, leaving no chance for another club to try to get him. Seem to recall many of our signings happened this way last Summer. Means the regular stories and rumours about players, particularly those playing in the UK ie Gyokeres, Clarke, Kent, Che Adams, can just be quickly forgotton

Happy days when we have the luxury of asking that question! I'd go for Beyer and Al-Dakhil.

Think we then need to see LB position filled and our defense is at a decent premier league level.

For what it’s worth I’ve been told he is a “maybe” so that would fit the narrative that we are trying for him but he’s interested in going elsewhere.

Interestingly despite the strong links I’ve been told we are not in for Mikautadez and that Tresor is our prime target in that area. Also nothing in the AMN links.

Interesting news that’s, throws the number 9/ false 9 position wide open again because mikaudtadez and tresor on the face of it seem 2 completely different players positional wise

This is a disappointing read first thing in the morning!

I could live without Lokonga to be honest. He’s not impressed me when I’ve seen him for Arsenal (albeit he was very good against us) - thought he looked a bit cumbersome and slow to the ball - but maybe that was a positional or game time thing VK could turn around.

Mikautadze is a different matter. Of all the players we’ve been linked to he would be the one I’d have hoped to sign the most.

Early days but maybe we’re finding it harder to sign players at Prem level which seems strange.

I don't know much at all about a lot of the players were in for. But the reports from people that do suggest we're going for a much higher calibre of player than last season. Might explain why it's tougher to bring them in, but glad we're aiming so high.

Looks like we will have completed 3 deals by the end of this week (Beyer, Vigoroux and O’Shea). We didn’t make our first signing last summer until June 26th. Also last season running until mid June for most leagues then internationals delays processes even more!

Certainly by early/mid next week.

I think it’s just a reflection of the pool of players we are now going for that we are competing with teams playing European competition so getting those done isn’t easy and by their nature we miss out on some (Verbruggen)

Players we should be able to do fairly easily (the three mentioned above) we are getting done pretty quickly.

There are also those players that we could push the button on immediately if we wanted to (Tella, Drameh) but I suspect we are waiting to see what other less certain targets take up from the budget.

Not sure it's that strange at all. It's exactly the problem we ran into in our last 5 years in the Premier League last time round. Sure, we've got a different recruitment model these days, but it does still revolve around having a constrained budget in comparison to our competitors.

It's quite a lot easier to sign players who are *likely* to be Championship standard so are suitably calculated gambles at that level for 3/4m, than to take the equivalent gamble at Premier League level where the minimum bet starts at close to £10m.

Plenty of time though - important we bring in some "solid" signings early in the window and give us time to ice the cake later. Inevitably, the more marquee signings at the top of our budget will take longer, because both we and the seller will fight for the best deal possible. This thing of getting business done early and moving on is true only to an extent, because ultimately your second target needs to be of roughly the same quality/profile and so all the same things apply - including the fact that demand outstrips supply.

Except possibly one, could the club itself be complicit in getting so many rumours into the public domain ? It would serve our purposes, while our rivals are pondering just which of our intended targets we are in for, we quietly go about signing the ones we really want, such as O'Shea, who seems to have popped up from nowhere, almost overnight.

does these Saudi signings on silly money filter down where "average/good" uk players now want more money ? thus on our level / budget make our recruitment job even harder.

Story in one of the papers about Newcastle looking to take Neves on loan from the Saudi club he’s just been sold to.

So a Saudi club pay what is widely regarding an inflated price for Neves.
And then that Saudi owner decides to loan the player to his Saudi mate at Newcastle.
Not so subtle way round FFP rules ?

May of course have no truth in the rumour.

Looks like we will have completed 3 deals by the end of this week (Beyer, Vigoroux and O’Shea). We didn’t make our first signing last summer until June 26th. Also last season running until mid June for most leagues then internationals delays processes even more!
One of those was an option we just had to execute, the other two don’t materially strengthen the squad imo - e.g. we’ve ‘lost’ THB replaced by O’Shea. Take your point about last year being no different & not complaining, just an observation we’re maybe finding it tougher with teams wanting more money and holding more competition for the players we want. It’s tough at the top!

Tbf Newclaret we have gone from being a big fish in a small pond, to being a minnow in an ocean.

Transfers will be harder at this level even with the pull of VK.

Habib Diallo mentioned again.

20m euros.

Not sure on this lad he doesn’t seem to fit the clubs model at 28.

I'm not even sure it's doing his "Saudi mate" a favour, aren't they both owned by same group? Dodgy as ****.

Yep it’s the same situation as Forrest and Olyimpiacos.

I think that's going to be the main problem, but there's also the 'premier league tax'. That will put up fees just because of the league we're in and may take deals to levels we're just not prepared to do.

That said, it's not even July yet so lets wait and see what happens!

Bit like how some thought it might work if we, sorry ALK bought the Belgian club?

O'Shea.

Medical underway with reported £7m fee.

Not the worst fee I've seen for a young defender if it's accurate. Presume it's not all paid up front either.

Some WBA fans saying they should have asked for a lot more, even though the release fee is £8 million.
And reporting it's £10m + addons, even though the release fee is £8 million.

I have my suspicions that some fans don't know what a release fee is.

Reported above that we're not interested in Georges Mikautadze, something which a lot of people seems disappointed by. He does look good on YouTube videos, but he hasn't played at any level in France. Ligue 2 isn't as competitive as the Championship.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if we get Tresor but I can only see him going to Palace.
