This agreesive style aka BazBall is great when applied properly. It's braindead when not.
1nd innings day 2 chasing 500+ = Have every batsman go for it.
2nd innings day 3 chasing 251 to win with 2 days remaining on a swinging pitch = chill your beans, tip away the runs and the win will come at a canter.
Duckett has edges 3 times to slip, how much longer before he's walking...

Great session for England.
27 runs chipped off tonight.
Big chance for England now.

You cannot rely on one approach to every scenario that Test cricket throws at you.
We are still 2-0 down in the series.
We are still 2-0 down in the series.

Think of Test cricket before this new attacking ethos?

Well we have 2 days to get um. Any batter throwing their wicket away should be put in the stocks and pelted with rotten

We are still 2-0 down in the series.
Played with plenty aggression like in 2005 but with less of the brain dead stuff.
Flintoff and KP in particularly, at Edgbaston and the Oval respectively batting with the middle order/tail aggressively… KP in particularly properly counter punching and taking the chance of a series draw away from the Aussies with a spectacular 158 off 187

The weather forecast will to a certain extent dictate our approach.

Just do the bits where you score all the runs quickly, but don't do the shots that get you out.... got it?
Not easy those 5 overs tonight, ball moving about under helpful condiitions, and they got their bit of overdue luck. Hopefully they can win it tomorrow, but as ever, it will be a game of fine margins, hopefully they come out of it the right side this time.

Re: Ashes third test
It's all about balance. Test cricket is a marathon not a sprint. Knowing when to turn on the heat on your opponents and when to ride out a storm are crucial to a batsman.
That was a phenomenal session from England. Great wickets coming from swinging ball on dark conditions.
If I'm opening the batting in that scenario, I've remembering all of those key wickets given away over the last hour and putting that in my head. I'm telling myself I have unlimited time at the crease, trying to play any turning ball as straight as possible and tip away for singles rotating strike / frustrating the bowler and captain field. That's smart play.
If forget about all those wickets and just keep pinging them at 8 an over, it's great fun, but it's more than likely gonna bite me on the arse.
Gimme a 80-1 after 20 over tipping away over 45-3 after 10 with 2 days play

Re: Ashes third test
There is no need to score quickly. Just pick up ones and two and thump the bad ball. Proper cricket is the Ashes, especially when 2 nil down and I have a day 3 ticket for OT.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 7:56 pmJust do the bits where you score all the runs quickly, but don't do the shots that get you out.... got it?

Re: Ashes third test
All forecasts suggest tomorrow be cloudy but mainly dry, maybe the early morning shower. Possibility to get all 90 overs in. Monday a bit more unknown.
Seamers dream tomorrow. We need concentrating batsman at the crease.
We have unlimited time to win this game is we play it smart and make a fantastic atmosphere at Old Trafford for the next test.

Not going to get a better chance than this to win a test match against the Aussies! First hour tomorrow is absolutely vital if we are to have a chance of winning.

Re: Ashes third test
Just back from Headingley. Frustrating weather but the cricket was worth waiting for. Delighted to have bowled them out and to get to the close without losing a wicket, but......
I feel we are chasing 30-40 more than we should be due to the tactics against Head. I've no idea what he has done that makes England think they couldn't get him out by bowling line and length in very helpful conditions.
Hopefully we knock the off tomorrow and it doesn't matter.

Travis Head is a very clean hitter of a cricket ball. Think Stokes but a far higher rated batsman.

Jimmy. was played twice on lifeless corporate pitches. There's a reason he's got 700 wickets.....and I believe he'd have been pretty lethal on the current patch.
If he's fit and rested for OT then he plays...no question at all. He might even be allowed a proper wicket keeper.

Re: Ashes third test
I was out and recorded it, and have only just finished watching. The 27-0 was v important and a great relief, but like you, I was baffled by England's decision to start bowling short stuff at Head when we were looking like getting wickets almost every over by simply continuing to bowl good old-fashioned line and length in what were, as you say, helpful conditions. It's been v small margins in the first two tests, let's hope that this decision doesn't cost us.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 10:13 pm

I called the 3 Aussie changes right for this Test, two of Englands. But had Woakes down to play Lords. (Which we would have won easy, if he was in the team with his record there.)

Just been doing a bit of digging for Old Trafford as I wasn't convinced Jimmy had the best of records there. Decent record with an average of 22.
But Woakes and Mo Ali both average 18 there.

As for Broad. He's 37 and just played 3 on Tests on the bounce.
The bowling department is holding on by a thread, we would be stupid to risk him.

Play proper cricket and we will win also we'll done to all the bowler's putting in a shift with us one bowler down . Looking forward later today.
Re: Ashes third test
It feel like we've pulled this out of the bag, whilst being a bowler down and under the pump at one stage. Basically roles reversed from the last test. I hope I'm right.

Re: Ashes third test
We can safely rule out the draw now.
Today's really our last chance to keep the series alive. If we can wear down their attack by leaving the short stuff, and everything from the 5th stump outwards then we can chase this down.
If the Aussies produce 10 unplayable snorters then we'll have to hold our hands up and take it on the chin. But if we simply hand it to them with a continuation of our gormless dim-witted nonsense, then going forwards, we probably need to look for some changes at the top.

But both are just about reaching 80mph with fitness issues. And as explained will be playing on the fastest and bounciest pitch in the country.
We have huge fitness issues in the bowling department where our bowlers are struggling to complete games.
