Is there provision for an extra day if the weather is bad enough?

Might not be needed, though.
No. Finished on Sunday.

Stokes has called everything perfect so far.

Ali batting 3 and scoring the highest knock from a no.3 this series.
Bairstow kept brilliant and batted superb.

Not seeing much criticism of JB now.
He's batted well, albeit against a knackered and demoralised aussie attack.

His selection for the series may have cost us the ashes. I truly hope it hasn't.

Much needed breakthrough and a batsman that can bat long.

Root barely showed any emotion so it was a good indication he wasn't convinced either. Very tough to say at first viewing, benefit of doubt always for the batters.

We'd have been raging if that was given against us.

It reminded me of toe end/armpit offsides given by VAR ... tbf the off field umpire got it right ... if there is such a tight margin should always go in favour of the batsman (no matter how much it would be funny if Smith had been given out 😉)

Particularly against Smith who's average against fast bowling is much poorer than he is overall.

Hooe it isn't a sign that he's not 100% fit.

I said yesterday if Aus were 4 down by stumps Friday that is a great position.

I also thought Australia might be a slim margin ahead, yet they are still 162 behind!

Pray to the weather gods to treat us right, be a travesty if we don't get anymore decent play and a result after today.

Cracking stuff, and how unbearably cruel it that's that now for this Test and the series.

BBC Weather and Met Office apps both say no play either tomorrow or Sunday, 70% or more chance of rain every hour over the weekend. Which basically means - rain.

I agree about the BBC, but in my experience the Met Office forecast is much better. But when it gives 80/90% chance of heavy rain all day it doesn't look good. Saturday is basically a write off and Sunday isn't looking much better.

We cancelled our village festival last Saturday because the Met office forecast was for rain and gale force winds from 2 till 7. There were a couple of heavy showers for about 20 mins and it was a bit breezy! 🤔

It's looking like rain could put a damper on things over the weekend which is a shame being in such a good position but i will go back to my early post in the first test should never have declared on day one or you could have easily have said declare at 200 lead yesterday to give you a little more time to bowl Australia out knowing the weather could take it out of our hands . But one thing about the cricket It's been enjoyable from both teams.

Just been listening to the commentary on the golf. An Amateur must have been playing some superb shots but got in trouble yesterday
They were urging him to get an experienced caddy, that would tone him down a bit.

We do the same in cricket with fast bowlers, just concentrate on line and length we tell them, so they end up like 1000s of others.

Thankfully this England team ignore all the outside noise which can produce some great cricket.

Remember when posters on here wanted us to stop playing pull shots? How many 6s would we have missed out on?

But doesn't that rather depend upon the context of the game?
It was basically a "free hit" for Bairstow yesterday, quick runs were a bonus, though we could also have declared or been bowled out sooner.
Criticism in the first two tests was informed by the context of the game, when we were under no time pressure and arguably the tactics should have been to grind the Aussies down.
The Aussies looked tired and down yesterday, (almost hapless), after a relentless schedule of cricket, (and no Lyon), but unfortunately we let them off the hook in the first 2 tests and now we are reliant on the weather. (Australia's 12th man).

Reckless declaration in the 1st test when Root was set on 100+ not out will cost us the Ashes.
A pity for we are now clearly the better side with Lyons out injured.

It’s like a broken record. The captain has made countless decisions in this series, some of them have worked and others not. To pick one I think is ridiculous and to suggest it’s cost us the Ashes even more.

The man is battling to save his Test career.

It was a superb knock.
