I’m sure I read a quote from VK where he said that he had been asked that by prospective players and his answer was would you have joined Leicester etc start of last season? He’s not wrong at all.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 9:53 pmVinny have a word. He wouldn’t be fighting relegation here….

Exactly, this is the bloke who couldn’t really get a game for Watford, yet somehow they managed to sell him for 20 million Euros

Hertha have had a lot of financial mismanagement in recent times, reports in Germany say the have a 40 million euro black hole to fill when a loan is due to be repaid in the autumn.Claretnick wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 9:27 pmAccording to transfermarket his contract expires on 30/06/2024

Lukebakio is apparently on £52,000 per week and they need him off the wage bill and need some kind of fee to cover the loss of income.

Just read that Guaita at Palace is refusing to play for them again. Another club in our ‘mini league’ if you will that’s having some problems.

And so, Burnley can wait,
It’s never too late,
To see Dodi run by,
Cross-ing balls today,
Luke-Bakio in anger,

I'd agree that they are all likely to be on substantial salaries, with contracts negotiated/agreed while we were in the EPL, presumably reducing during last season in the Championship, but now returned to where they were before. However, I forsee a significant problem with your proposal that we offload them to reduce our wage bill: Who else - even if we offered some of them for free! - is going to match those salaries that they're currently earningwarksclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 7:04 pmIn the interest of keeping our wage bill down the players we would not miss, and who VK is likely to seldom use with this wealth of talent coming in-Jay, Cork, JBG, Bastian, Weghorst, Taylor (I am confident a LB is coming) could all go. They will be on big wages with possible exception of Bastian. No room for sentiments
One of the difficulties of doing business in the real world is that all parties to a contract get a say in its amendment or termination; while it might suit BFC and yourself to get them off the wage bill, what incentive do the players have to agree to such a transfer? I'd agree there's no place for sentiment, but it's probably wise to make space for contract law.

Rapidly getting to a point where we will have seriously good players not only not in the eleven but not even on the bench despite being fit. All 25 would arguably be good enough to start.
That will be one of the biggest tests Vinny will face, but he knows all about it, having spent a lot of time at City on the bench himself. Happens a lot at City, just look at Foden nowadays for example. Unbelievably good yet cannot get a game.
p.s. not sure why the latest Belgian lad thinks we will be in a relegation battle. Only our most pessimistic posters on here seem to believe that. Sometimes realism entails looking upwards, not downwards.

I read it that the relegation battle he was referring to was if he stays at his existing club , not us.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:17 pmRapidly getting to a point where we will have seriously good players not only not in the eleven but not even on the bench despite being fit. Sacha seemed to word it like “Hertha want 10m BUT the player doesn’t want another relegation battle” then “Burnley have given the player until the end of the week for his decision”. Seemed clear to me he means us.

Keeping a big squad happy is why the “big” clubs pushed for 9 subs. I never thought to see the day where it would benefit us.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:17 pmRapidly getting to a point where we will have seriously good players not only not in the eleven but not even on the bench despite being fit. BTW in my opinion it is a terrible decision that takes players off the field and onto the bench when they could be displaying their talents starring for lesser clubs. I’d go back to the original one sub and for injury if I could.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Fully accept what you say, but was not suggesting we suddenly offload all of them and run the risk of breaking agreements and law. Nothing to stop Vinnie having a frank and compassionate word with them telling them that with all the incomings he cannot promise them game time, leaving them the option to find a club to go on loan. or move there permanently. All depends on how much Cork, Rodriguez, JBG, want to extend their playing career, unless they are prepared to go to America. Its very easy to end up like Matt Lowton who hung around the club and is now without a club. That conversation must have happened to Andros Townsend who weighed up the possibility of game time and realised the new competition for starts will really restrict his game timeAfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:12 pmI'd agree that they are all likely to be on substantial salaries, with contracts negotiated/agreed while we were in the EPL, presumably reducing during last season in the Championship, but now returned to where they were before. The Townsend who while at Palace made 36,36,38,24 and 34 league appearances out of 38 and 21 for Everton until he got injured ?
Both those clubs and managers must have been easily fooled.
Is there any point making up such daft stuff

It looks like it’s between Bournemouth and Wolfsburg to sign Joachim Maehle from Atalanta for a package of €12m. This lad is a very good footballer. An attacking left full back who is comfortable on the ball and likes to get forward. It’s a shame we haven’t been linked given his calibre and price…

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Completely irrelevant. We should still be able to compete for hamer if we want to as we must have some budget left. We’re close to Ramsey and Various wingers and everyone knows we need a left back and maybe a centre forward.
In reality Berge is a really good signing at £12 million and I’m very surprised we might get him. This is a player Liverpool and arsenal have shown interest in at £20 million plus in previous windows. I think Berge is good value at £12 million so to me it doesn’t matter who Sheffield go and buy, we’ve got a good deal there…

I thought Coventry were ‘holding out for £15m’ for Hamer according to the reports when we supposedly bid.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The only concern about midfield if Berge and Cullen are the mainstays might be that it lacks a switch of play. My understanding is that Berge is a give and go player not unlike Cullen, which at one level makes them a good compliment. But Cullen doesn't rake passes side to side to open up space and my understanding is that isn't Berge's strength either. Last season we relied on Maatsen from full back for that, and THB - neither of whom are in the squad currently. It was a miss at times last season, and also latterly whilst we were in the Premier League - it makes it easier for teams to hunt in packs if you can't quickly sweep the ball across the pitch to escape them.
I suspect Berge is overall a better fit than Hamer (we need the presence apart from anything else) but that is one area where I think Hamer would give us something we lack. Brownhill doesn’t really do it either so it as a shortcoming in our midfield. Perhaps it is in Ramsey's skill set.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I don't know too much about the performances of either of them last season, though I heard some pundits rave about Hamer. But I do know that one is six years younger than the other. When Hamer was Ramsey's age he'd played 22 first team minutes, according to a very quick google search. I know development varies and isn't a straight line, but if there isn't much to choose between them I'd rather us go for the 20 year old than the 26 year old.

Hamer and Souza in exchange for Berge seems like good business for Sheff U if they get it done.
I’m happy with Berge but wouldn’t have been at all disappointed with those two instead.
