Today’s Blast from our Recent Clarets Past (VIII) - Vince Overson

Post by jdrobbo » Thu Aug 10, 2023 11:52 am

Any memories of ‘Big Vince’ on or off the field?

I remember seeing him in ‘96 I think during his second spell. Fair to say, he was nearly at the end. Top bloke though. Met him a few times.

Playing alongside his brother in the centre of defence, his goal against Wimbledon on the Turf in 1981.

Damn good player and such a shame he got the injuries when he came back.

Nothing critical - he's bigger than me and he might find out :D :D :D

The goal against Wimbledon was a screamer. Beasant didn’t stand a chance. Also that season he scored with a header against Exeter which was either outside the box or very close to being so. Still certain that if he hadn’t been injured we would have stopped up in 82/83.

The thing I remember most was his ‘ shoulder charge’.

He scored the first Burnley goal I ever saw against Millwall in 83. I was only 5 though and was more interested in running up and down the empty Bee hole end terrace, swinging on the barriers.

I played in the same cricket team as him up Towneley, top bloke and knows my dad very well.

I saw him in Padiham Tesco last week from a distance, so he's still in the area.

The so called hard man of non league football Johnny King didn’t know what hit him.
The crowd cheered like a goal had been scored , King had been big mouthing before the game. I think big Vince was only a teenager at the time

Would this have occurred during the 6-1 FA Cup win over Altrincham early 1982? If so, I recall a lot of 'mouthing' coming our way from Cheshire.
Did Vince make his debut Nov 3rd 1979 at home to Orient or was it the week before? I'm specific about the date because my brother got married that day and my son was born too so I missed the game.

Yes, Vince made his debut in that Orient game.

I seem to recall him playing in that excellent Stoke City team in 1992/93

Stein
Russell
Gleghorn
Possibly even Dave Kevan?

And Birmingham with Big bad Jonny Gale.

I was on a coach/minibus from Padiham that went to watch Vince play for Birmingham, against Tranmere, at Wembley in the Auto glass trophy.
55k Brummies chanting 'Keep right on' was loud.

Played cricket against Vince up Towneley, he played for Hapton Inn. One game there was trouble on the adjoining pitch, young Asian lad threatening the umpire Jack Green. Players came off the pitch and Jack sat on the tailgate of a parked car next to Vince. I don't think anyone will bother you know Jack. Unsurprisingly that was the end of any trouble. Oh and my mate Jimmy caught Vince out in both games we played against him.

Yep. He still lives in Ightenhill.
