Couldn't agree more. It looks like all recruitment is being done by Kompany using his firm MUD Analytics (his business partner Lee Mooney is in the doc with him at board meetings) so it's all driven by data.agreenwood wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 10:23 amIt’s slightly weird if posters genuinely believe there’s no bigger plan at work here and we’re just wildly signing wingers without any strategy.
Firstly VK is an intelligent guy and has earned our trust. Secondly, whether you like ALK or not, they don’t strike me as being in the business of wasting lots of money or foisting players on VK that he doesn’t want.
I'd be amazed if we didn't fill the LB slot by Friday be that with Maatsen or one of the other 2/3 targets they'll be looking at.

Ok I'll ask the question as nobody else has yet. Tony, how many articles have you got ready for the window closing?

Give them 15 games at this level and then form an opinion.
Foster is prime example of the improvement in the player in 6 month. We need to pick up results but we are building for the future not just today. Something that the club should have done previously

Agree with most of this, but would add that there’s an old part of football recruitment which is you can only sign players when they become available….. this may mean you end up over stocked or with an imbalance of players.Ightenhill_Claret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 11:00 amCouldn't agree more. It’s nothing to do with happy clappers etc etc:summitclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 10:51 amLooking like the happy clappers are ganging up on anyone that dare comment on the gaping holes in our squad as of now. This is a DISCUSSION thread.
I think everyone supports the policy of getting in raw talent with a view to future profit. However, this must be balanced with enough PL nous and experience to ensure we stay up.
I also think everyone agrees that we need a starting left back, preferably like IM. Ditto another defensive cm to allow the full backs to take turns to push on (to do what Cork used to). Additionally, ideally a proven striker would be perfect.
From the 2 games so far we are clearly missing our best 2 passers from last season. Muric and THB. Villa had 3 on Benson and LK had acres of space on the other side. No one had the passing distance to reach him. I think Trafford is going to be great, but spending so much on a keeper was not necessary if we can't don't fill the above gaps. Ditto Berge if we don't get the essential defensive cm we need.
By Friday night, these problems may well be sorted, but if not then we will have spent a lot without balancing the squad.
People want to have an opinion but then don’t like it when that opinions is in some way questioned. It works both ways for the so called happy clappers and equally the doomsdayers or whatever little titles you want to bracket folk into.
The problem at the moment is that a lot of the opinions are focussed on the here and now as though the window has closed and nothing can be done about the gaps or supposed imbalance. A lot of the language used has bordered on hyperbole and takes no account of how we have seen the owners and managers operate so far.
I think we’ve seen enough so far under this regime to suggest that the majority of not all gaps will be filled by Friday night and I’m cast iron certain we will have at least one more left back in the building.
The time for talking about gaping holes and imbalance is after the window closes, not now.

The Shirky principle is the adage that “institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution”. More broadly, it can also be characterized as the adage that “every entity tends to prolong the problem it is solving”.

I feel it takes longer than that. Last year, we won the league by miles. Many on here have forgotten the criticism the team was getting as we reached November for our inability to win. It was VK, ALK, Pace, Barnes, Muric et al to blame because they didn't know what they were doing.
Temas take time to gel. Look at Forest last year. We are repeating, in many ways, what Cooper went through. They came good after Christmas once quality started to emerge.
I trust the process. I think we all should.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Exactly this. I think most of us knew that ALK didn't buy the club because of their love for Burnley FC and their plan was to make money and **** loads of it. I just don't think most of us knew how they intended to do this. it is becoming quite obvious how they plan to do it. Invest in young potential and turn some of them into very expensive assets. Secure those assets by tying them down to long contracts. I am quite sure that some will be a great success and some will fail miserably.agreenwood wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 10:23 amIt’s slightly weird if posters genuinely believe there’s no bigger plan at work here and we’re just wildly signing wingers without any strategy.

They have also secured an exceptionally talented and knowledgeable manager who buys into their plan 100%. For all VK's skills as a football coach, man manager and all around decent human being, let's not forget whilst at City he managed to pick up a Masters in Business Administration.

So much revisionist crap just does my head in. People let the last two/three years of Dyche’s tenure with 0 tangible investment into the playing side dilute their opinion of his overall tenure - we had succession planning, it just wasn’t done to the degree of what it has been in this one window where I think we’ve lost the plot.Burnley87 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 11:13 amMakes me wonder if one of you guys who got promoted at work would want to be judged as quickly as you judge some of the players

15 games in the season is 40% of the way through - we have eight less games to play and each one is a lot harder that what it was last year - why are we making it hard for ourselves?!
We had the walkaway best team in the league last year that took a while to properly gel in a league that DOES afford you that luxury and it’s been torn down in what I think is the biggest over think I can think of in recent times.
To have just 1/5 of our players that were in the Champ TOTY starting this season and 3/11 of our regular starters starting against Villa is mind boggling.
Innovation and growth is good - re writing the entire script and doing things that no other team has done coming out of the championship is daft.
People cite Forest and what not - they scrapped up through the playoffs in 21/22 spent an absolute ton and still this year have McKenna, Worrall and Garner starting as their stalwarts in their spine.

I don’t think anyone saying give it 15 games is saying so in the basis we’d have zero points after 15 games.
Also, ‘m fairly certain people were telling us how unforgiving the championship is and not a league for experimenting at the start of last season.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think Dande has it right in that we’ve possibly signed so many wide players because we they were on our list of top targets and have all become available this summer. The club possibly recognises that this isn’t ideal, but also value them all enough to want to avoid missing out on them with one eye on future development and profit.
Clearly they won’t all pay off, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the club spends the next 5 months seeing how they compete for starting berths with a view to loaning a few out in January - the Belgium top flight looks a genuine possibility if the Kortrijk takeover goes through.

It really isn’t mind boggling. We haven’t been able to sign 2 of them as they would have cost 40-45m which is not good business sense. Brownhill has been carrying an injury. Beyer and Zaroury were out of the Villa game. Foster and AlDakhil were bought for the Prem and part of the title winning team so why aren’t they counted.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 30, 2023 11:56 amTo have just 1/5 of our players that were in the Champ TOTY starting this season and 3/11 of our regular starters starting against Villa is mind boggling.

We play and beat Luton as scheduled last weekend and there would be very few comments on here about wasted money on players, players not being good enough etc, questioning the management and where they have spent the money. Yes let's debate but let's not panic when so far we've only played the two teams with the most points in the Premier League since the start of 2023. Tolerating the uncertainly is part of the ride and it makes the good times that bit sweeter.

We were too busy tossing about with 9mill opening offers trying to outsmart the market and instead chucking more on a lad that hasn’t made the match day squad, 17 goals last season.
Good enough to be 50 mill Moussa Diaby’s replacement for Leverkuson but not good enough anymore for big time Burnley.
Are we a football team or just a corporate entity now?
