My first away game aged 9 with my Father (RIP)

It's amazing how many personal memories these articles bring - my first visit to Goodison was also with my dad and another defeat - but almost 11 years earlier.

Absolute diabolical penalty. I was there with some of my Evertonian friends and they were as gobsmacked as me. I just wonder if that had happened to a Liverpool player and the penalty awarded. Kloppp would have had a heart attack. Disgraceful decision but as a Burnley fan, player or manager you knew you'd never get the rub of the green at any of the big teams. Nothing has changed over the years.

Back then you would usually think that a referee had given a bad decision against you but with no proof given there was rarely any footage afterwards. The whole ground knew that decision was a complete nonsense.

Another visit to Goodison Park and another defeat there for me. I've got to know Billy Rodaway well over the last few years but didn't realise this was his baptism as far as league games went. He's a staunch Evertonian but would have loved an encounter with 'his team' I'm certain, although having said that he always refers to the Clarets as 'us'. Billy had captained Liverpool Schoolboys a few years earlier playing in midfield so I would imagine a number of people who remembered him in that role were perhaps interested to see how he'd progressed.
As for the game I recall it being a frustrating one where despite a couple of near misses I never felt we were going to score. It was a dreadful decision and one that didn't look any better 24 hours later when highlights were shown on Granada with Gerald Sinstadt. I watched that game at the home of a mate I'd made in the previous three years as a full time student. After the game itself we met up in the Black Dog, then to his family home in Kirkby for a bite to eat then off to experience the joys of a Saturday night in Kirkby. Anyone who has been will have an idea what I mean with, as my mate told me, 'the regular ambulance' stationed outside the Johnny Todd pub. Sorry for the lengthy post but a weekend of meeting 'characters'.

He didn't play at all in the next season and this was his first game in 1973/74 so his first in the top flight. How is he by the way? I've not seen him since he was back for the Orient season. Top, top lad is Billy Rod.

Doing well. Always great company and his fondness for Burnley Football Club is delightful. Not a great teller of stories( in the way many ex-pros today seem to be) but when he does relate or refer to games and players of the past it's always a good listen. A relative of mine is his son in law and that's how I've got to know him.
Must have been some talent when he captained Liverpool Schoolboys because let's face it I imagine there was a load of competition at that time. Don't know where his loyalties will be for the cup game but I suspect Everton probably just edge it. Can't really blame him.

He was on the Turf for the Chelsea game I won’t repeat the words he used to describe the defending on show! He visits from Liverpool every couple of months usually to coincide with a home game!
