Not long until we all have to be dressed in the same club shop authorised uniform before we're allowed in, like Squid Game or something.

Munites from Fan Advisory Board Meeting with the club

Club: Welcome to the meeting; thank you for attending; the club already have some ideas on how to improve the matchday experience... we won't be doing the drum thing; don't worry, we've parked that for now, but we are listening.

Fan 1: Good, the last thing we want to hear as fans after going 0-2 down in the 85th minute is someone bashing a drum; football and drums don't work. Don't get misled by the 'England Band' in the media. The fans hate them.

Club: Well, we want fans to enjoy the matchday experience - so we were thinking of Flags and Banners.

Fan 1: Ahh, OK. Fans are individuals and have their connection with the club, and it's that spirit that unites supporters as one.

Fans 2: I agree, flags and banners can be good because it's a way of showing your support from where you have travelled from; not all Burnley supporters are from the town you see, despite what you might read in the media, some have come as far as say... Stoke. So to have a flag with 'Stoke Clarets' emblazoned on it can go with all the others, such as Glasgow, Malta and Hull.

Club: Right, OK.

Fan 1: I would love to express myself as a fan. My favourite ever player is Graham Branch; you won't know him. He wasn't the best player to pull on the Burnley shirt, but he was my hero as a younger claret, and I want to bring in a flag to celebrate him and why I supported Burnley in the first place.

Fan 2: That'll be awesome. Mine wouldn't be a player, though, but I'd love to make a banner about 'Winning the title at Ewood' or something....

Fan 1: ...It'll be claret with blue trimmings, with Branchy's face as a stencilled design in the middle, with 'Special Branch' in big white letters.... other fans can do it with their favourite players too because being a supporter is personal to them and its a way of expressing that. They can even take some time to make some banners at home...

Club: ...Or they buy them in the club shop.

Fan 1: Well. Yeah, it'll be good to have a choice of designs, though; we don't have people just turning with messages with black markers on bedsheets, so if it's more straightforward to buy some?

Club: Fifteen quid. We Are Burnley. Yellow or blue.

Fan 2: Excuse me?

Club: Listen to me, you little piece of ****. That's your choice... you buy a flag, and you ******* conform! You get what you want and we look good for listening...

Fan 1: But we never asked for flags or.....

Club: Shut the door behind you, fan ****.

It’s like a comedy sketch , bring in flags and banners to boost atmosphere , oh erm make sure they’re from the club shop or you’re not getting in 😂

I know the club are trying but the same people who have ultra sanitised prem football now want some atmosphere back . They’ve removed all spontaneity from the game , don’t bring this /that in , don’t sing that , report anything you don’t agree with , sit down , and ffs don’t bring smoke of pyros in…
Heard from a good source they will also be giving out song sheets, they want us to create an atmosphere but only Burnley approved songs. The worst bit about it is they haven't consulted Macca in the Cricketfield stand so this could really upset a few

Ownership getting it completely wrong again when it comes to the football side of things, the feel good season we had last season papered over the limitations these owners have when it comes to understanding football.
Russell Ball for example, the fan experience director, he might be a great bloke and what not but it’s clear he’s never ever been a football fan and just doesn’t understand how a match day needs to work to the normal fan

The money is in hospitality - those are the fans who spend money. 'Normal fans', who just want a ticket, pie and a pint - and they are in the way. So the club have to monetise what those fans supposedly want - priority on away tickets for example - so they sold them a 'membership scheme'.

Now they are hawking flags at £15 a pop because, apparently, they are giving supporters 'what they want'.

Most fans just want a seat where they can see the pitch and an ample window of time to grab warm food at halftime. So the club have to be very clever in making fans believe they want something and then charge them for it.

Yeah you’re right and that’s the sad truth that the money is in the hospitality. It’s amazing what 3 points on Saturday would do for everyone’s mood

I see the club shop have a large stack of drums in one corner, as only official drums can be taken into the ground.and after I’d borrowed the Great Drum of Knotty Ash for the West Ham game!

I got an expensive hospitality package last year for me and a few others, cost us a few thousand.

The first home game this season I had the fan guy calling my mobile asking if I wanted more seats. He left me a voicemail, I returned his call and left one back and I'm yet to hear from him.

Luckily I have a season ticket but some of the people at the club are pretty poor at their job imo.

Under the guise of trying to create a better atmosphere, the mask has slipped and revealed that this is nothing more than a cynical ploy to squeeze more money out of us.

I’ve got a huge custom made flag in my loft that I haven’t taken to a game since Charlton away when we got promoted. I would happily loan/give it to the club to put up, and I bet there would be many others willing to do the same.

Is it fair to say that some supporters will have flags they take to away games up and down the country which they won't be able to take to their own home ground? Funny situation that if so isn't it?

This could've been dealt with a bit better, I reckon. With a bit more imagination too maybe. Less restrictive of course. They could've also ran a competition, maybe for kids, to design their own and the winning one or two or three gets made up and put in the CFS or something. I don't know. Something which still feels organic and fan led but the club have an input and bit of control too.

Yes, me too. A big 8 foot by 5 foot one.
would certainly consider "loaning" it to the club, but the treatment of the player boards gives me reservations

Imagine witnessing this in the spring, then thinking the fans want the crap that they suggested - whilst saying they’re the only ones allowed!

I can understand why they have said no Palestine or Israel flags, but what about half and half scarves? I think it's a great idea and would get us some positive exposure.

You can't stand in front of someone, but you can wave a flag in front of them.

What's the difference?

You simply can’t manufacture an atmosphere with some shitty flags.

This smacks of middle-aged businessmen pretending that they truly understand what being a football fans means.

They blatantly don’t - it’s proper one step forward stuff is this.

I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with the communication after the drummer nonsense. I really shouldn’t have.

Who is coming up with these ideas and who on earth is signing off on the communications? There seems to be no comprehension of how they’ll land. I’m not sure if they’re naive, down right stupid or actively trying to alienate the core supporters.

Fund some decent flags and large banners etc. That might not be a bad starting point (perhaps even fair enough if they want to ensure that they’re not overly offensive or inflammatory).

The rest of it is just nonsense though; monetising it, only allowing generic flags sold by the club, is just ridiculous.

Clap sticks, thousands of generic flags, drummers and whatever else they put forward will only serve to create a sterile, plastic atmosphere.

Give me shouting, swearing, passion and proper support, any day.

This is exactly what I thought they’d do.

There’s loads you could do: flags for ex and current managers, players/legends, 1882, the various club crests, No Nay Never, etc, etc.

I thought they’d look at clubs with the flags across Europe, review their designs, then get the fans working with flag designers to replicate them. With the club funding some of them.

As it happens the club want us to buy flags from them. Flags designed by the marketing department.

Well yes, I suppose they’re not even that good

Tbh I’m not a massive fan of the Union Jack/St George’s “Burnley FC” flags like the ones above the culvert pictured above (like the claret & blue No Nay Never one). Much prefer the Melbourne/Padiham Clarets ones.

I don’t think we need a load of sterile “up the clarets” and “we are Burnley”, “we are premier league” stuff. We need flags designed by the fans, immortalising club legends, the history of the club, our badges, current hero’s, etc, etc. Like a tapestry of the club. You just have to look at the European teams that have a lot of flags and see how we can adapt to create similar. Like Shankly flags in the Kop, they are cool.

And let’s be honest, the inside of the stands are embarrassingly poor quality so could easily be covered with banners, etc.

I don’t know how much flags cost but a simple way the club could’ve got fans onside with this is to say they’d spend like £5k with a flag company/designer and run a competition for fans to design flags that the company then turns in to a reality.

Could’ve been done so well and fairly cheaply, yet has come across as the complete opposite - please spend some more money with us.

Why don’t we sort a massive flag with Vincent and the team on from last year.

Not sure how we’d go about getting approval to use it from the club but I know various print companies that would produce it for us

Hopefully I’ll be one of the first 200 then.

I went in to the club shop today and have to confess to being a bit harsh on the club in my criticism of the flags.

There’s three. All very decent sizes and they look good quality.

The We are Burnley one (yellow writing - bit odd) is the only one I’d seen and I’m not a fan. Odd font and all a bit corporate.

The other two however are a claret one with a big white badge. Looks smart. The third is the best - a claret and blue chequered background with the club badge on. That looks excellent.

So I take back what I said about these. The club have done a good job although I’d like to see more designs added. An old badge perhaps, the round BFC badge, sure there are other things they could do.

But then they just need add bigger ones in the CFS imo. Unique ones like you see in the yellow wall today, ideally designed in conjunction with fans.

Oddly I didn’t see any poles that came with them?! Not sure if you have to provide your own or they give them out at the desk.

I ordered my flag via the touch screen, I return in February to collect it.

Not long until we all have to be dressed in the same club shop authorised uniform before we're allowed in, like Squid Game or something.
They are half way there with it in selling replica shirts. Loads of people were complaining about it and not liking the sponsor or the collar was too big - yet bizarrely still went out and paid £50 or whatever they cost like complete mugs.

I bet this seasons shirt sales are a fraction of last years. The designs are awful.

I can tell just by how few I see of them around the ground, how few I see of them at training sessions with the juniors and how short the club shop queues are on match days.

Hopefully a lesson to whoever designed them and signed them off that a lot more effort is required.

Worst set of kits in a long time. Weird really because more exposure this season so you'd think they'd want a shirt as popular as last seasons, especially the home.

It’s bizarre and frustrating.

We sign up JJ who is seeking to give us exposure all over the US, potentially have the most exciting young team ever (nobody could’ve predicted it to unfold quite so badly and the fixture list hasn’t helped), DP signed up to attract the kids, the opportunity to grow shirt sales globally… then produce at least two stinkers and one passable effort (the 3rd that we never wear).

I honestly have no idea who designs them or more importantly who approves them, because anyone with eyes can see the home is boring & looks like a Villa/WHU kit - not exactly attractive to a younger audience, the away is disgusting, the 3rd okay. But after 3 excellent kits last year, feels like such a regression.

It might seem a small point (this years kits are next decades retro kits, after all) but if we’re going to achieve what I think we’re trying to as a club, everything has to be elite to attract global audiences and support.

I reckon if JJ sent his mates and away kit they wouldn’t wash their car with it, nevermind post on socials.

Umbro are pretty hit & miss. Hope we either force them to up their game or find a new supplier.

Love the yellow away, third looks cheap and nasty like a kids pyjama top from Primark. Home kit is very Villa though.

So what happened with the flags then?

There were meant to be 200 handed out but I didn’t see any in the crowd and the only ones that were on show were the 6 large ones being waved on the perimeter at the start of the game
