Team of the Seventies question please ?
Just thinking of the great team we had in the early seventies. Stevenson,Noble,Newton,Dobbo,Waldron,Thomson,Nulty,Casper,Fletc,Collins and Taffy.
What I can't clearly recall ( i'm ageing !) is a second eleven in each position ?
Any help greatly appreciated !
Thanks

Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
In April ‘73, when Alan Stevenson didn’t play, it was little Micky Finn that kept nets against Spurs in a home win that was on MotD.
I’m guessing Billy Rodaway would have been the CB cover.
Brian Flynn just behind Billy Ingham for MF.
We were so lucky to get away with such a small squad, very few injuries or suspensions until March of ‘75 when we fell away to nowhere from top of the league.

Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
In the early '70's, particularly '72/'73 & '73/'74 seasons, one of the key reasons behind our success was being able to field a settled injury-free first eleven for most of the time. For instance, in our first season back in Division One when we finished 6th in the table, some nine players played at least 38 of the 42 games. Geoff Nulty, at No.7, played all 42 games.Weymouth Claret wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 1:02 pmJust thinking of the great team we had in the early seventies. Therefore playing time for this "second eleven" you are searching for was very limited. Jeff Parton and MIcky Finn,
played one game each in goal as did Mick Doc at right-back and Ian Brennan at left-back.
Mr. Versatile, Billy Ingham played in various positions when required, Ray Hankin at No.8, Billy Rodaway at No.6 and just an odd game for Brian Flynn.
Think that's just about it.
Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
Alan Stevenson was an ever present in 72/3 & only missed 2 games the following season, with Finn playing at Chelsea & Parton at Man Utd. Finn did play against Spurs but that was in 74/5 & was his last 1st team appearance.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 2:11 pmIn April ‘73, when Alan Stevenson didn’t play, it was little Micky Finn that kept nets against Spurs in a home win that was on MotD.

If you take 72/3 & 73/4 as our best seasons of the decade, then besides the regulars, the only other players to make league appearances were West, Cliff, Probert, Rodaway, Flynn, Finn, Parton & Brennan.

Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
You are of course correct. I remember the Spurs match for a family occasion but was wrong with the year. No idea why as I was single in ‘73 and married in ‘75.sjb wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 2:55 pmAlan Stevenson was an ever present in 72/3 & only missed 2 games the following season, with Finn playing at Chelsea & Parton at Man Utd. With the greatest of respect to Flynny (and I had much admiration for him as a team player), who are taking out of that first eleven to accommodate Brian ?

Thanks everyone. Incredible that we only fielded 16 outfield players all season when the pitches were not always great and the tackles were flying in !!

And remarkably six players started all 42 games in that '72/'73 season, with Dobbo and Fletcher just behind on 41 and 40 respectively.Weymouth Claret wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 3:42 pmThanks everyone. Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
We got straddled with the 'team of the '70s' label and immediately got relegated.
Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
When Jimmy Adamson made that statement,Flynn,Taffe and Hankin were not in the team yet.Newton and Waiters were older players that were brought in a little later.
I think the players he had in mind were mainly from the 1968 FA youth cup winners, added to the likes of Coates Casper Waldron etc.
Thinking about this, when we were relegated in 1970,,we had a forward line of Thomas Coates Casper Collins and London, amazingly the problem was lack of goals .

Re: Team of the Seventies question please ?
Apologies, the 51 goals was the previous season 1969/70 when we finished 14th in Division One.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 10:14 amThink you can make that 51 goals over 42 games, gtclaret.
29 just seemed too bad to be true. Steve Kindon weighed in with 17 himself.
We were relegated the following season in 1970/71.

One fascinating thing for me is that over 20 players have been named on this thread, but none of the names appear to coincide with the faces of the Burnley players on the photo.......Be interesting to identify those players.

That's because they aren't Burnley players at all. The 2 gentlemen on the right are Lancashire cricketers Peter Lever & Jack Simmons, and I'm pretty sure the other adult is the then Lowerhouse professional Tony Benneworth.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 3:52 pmGreat picture, indeed.

I said when we were relegated,it was 1970/71 season, I've just checked again and it was 29 goals.Amazingly we've scored more this season after 35 games with a team not in the same class as the side 50years agoRoyboyclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 02, 2024 10:14 amThink you can make that 51 goals over 42 games, gtclaret.

Someone has posted a programme on Facebook of a home game against Hull City in February 1972.The forward line of Thomas Casper Fletcher Kindon James.
We lost 2-0,How can a forward line like that not score in Division 2
