World Snooker Championship

Post by Beagle » Sat Apr 27, 2024 12:25 pm

Anyone else been watching this week? Already a couple of upsets and big names going out. Enjoying Murphy v Maguire at the moment. Can anyone stop Ronnie?

I've been watching bits.

I thought the BBC had binned Virgo off, but he's still there polluting my eardrums.

O’Sullivan through to the quarters, along with Kyren Wilson. Not been many classics this round, but two attractive matches reaching a conclusion tonight in Higgins v Allen and Lisowski v Bingham.

Poor tournament so far, not helped by some big names dropping out early (or sometimes not even qualifying) and some strange scheduling. Probably also not helped comparing to last year where Brecel delivered one of the all time great WC wins imo.

Hoping things pick up now we're getting to the business end. Kyren and Judd are the only ones looking like they have even close to the capability to stop Ronnie at the moment.

Much better tonight. Really good snooker and close finishes in both Higgins v Allen and Lisowski v Bingham.

The Higgins/Allen 24th frame was a belter. Not for the potters though. Super safety.

What an astounding pair of games tonight - really good match play on both tables, and the finish from Higgins in the 25th was sublime

That final red by Higgins one of the best shots I’ve ever seen. Unbelievable.

The Higgins Allen game was only the 8th time in Crucible history (47 years) that a game has come down to the final black ball.

I think there was a final in the 80's that went to the last black. Think it was when outsider Joe Johnson beat Steve Davis who was the world #1 at the time.

BBC2 had an hour of a programme about the match a couple of days back. I’d have preferred the full frame but as posted above it is available.

Qualifier Jack Jones knocks out Judd Trump, who was playing beautiful snooker last week but looked off it most of that match. Jones to play Bingham or O’Sullivan in the semi.

Seeing there’s a snooker thread here's a snooker question.
What is the lowest possible score that can legally win a finished frame of snooker?

I can’t argue with that and it is less than mine. Mine involves all balls potted and there are two ways to the same total.

If someone is 21-14 up with just the black left and they pot the black but go in off would the other player win the frame and also end up on 21?

It would be a respotted black following a draw at the end of the frame. Going in off on the black doesn’t lose you the frame in snooker.

I thought any foul on the black when it was the last ball lost the frame but wasn't sure when it made it tied. If you are two behind and your opponent fouls on the black that would be end of frame even though they are now only five behind wouldn't it?

I suppose you could have the utterly ridiculous scenario of pot all 15 reds with one shot then the white goes in - 4-0 to opponent with just the colours left

Opponent pots yellow, green, brown and blue - 18-0, snookers required.

I would imagine it defies the laws of physics, like…

Hope so. In a sport of dull men, Stuart Bingham is by far the dullest.

In this scenario it could end 16-15 as there are 31 pts up for grabs (27+4)

The winner.
The alternative is:
15 reds + in off=player gets4 away+2=6
Opponent gets 3
Player gets 4
Opponent gets 5
Player gets 6 and wins. Black not needed
Game ends 16-8

Going in off the black ALWAYS loses the frame unless there is exactly 7 difference in the scores.

As mentioned in the post above, the scores would then be tied following the in off and the black would be re-spotted.

I'm really getting back into watching and playing snooker... My youngest lad has shown an interest so I let him have a couple of lessons in York last year. Since then we've played almost weekly - he's yet to beat me but has come close a couple of times. I used to play a lot in my early 20s and had the luxury of my own table to practice on - Sundays were spent either playing or comotozed watching snooker on BBC2 after a big Saturday night out.

I grew up with snooker in my family, my dad regularly played in the Observer cup in accrington and that was quite a high standard. Got to the semis but never won it. His best mate Dave Ralph got to the final but lost to Jack king in the seventies if memory serves did. Back then snooker hadn’t quite become as big as it is now. i remember john Spencer and Dennis Taylor being at our house sharing a beer with my dad . Denis Taylor lived in blackburn then . Alex Higgins lived in church. Spencer was from bury .East Lancs was a hotbed of snooker back then.

Yeah so, going in off of the black doesn’t ALWAYS lose the frame. As I said in the post you’re quoting, it’d be a respotted black in the scenario we’re both replying to.

Better this evening. You feel that final frame was a bit of a killer for him. Looked a bit spent afterwards (though maybe that was just having to deal with Rob Walker) - you wonder how much he has left in the tank.

He did well pulling some back 10-7 would have looked a lot better than 11-6 for his night endeavours he did look abit jaded but it was mentioned he had a late night last night on media duties. A good nights sleep might work wonders he always the underdog anyway.

Jak Jones seems to be bouncing back then makes an error ... (not that Wilson doesn't keep missing or getting out of position).

But Wilson maintaining the 5 frame advantage at 15-10 going into tonights final session

Looks like a disappointing end to a disappointing championship. Other than Higgins v Allen, no real stand out moments, weird scheduling, big names not turning up.
