Newcastle (H)

Post by Poulton-le-Claret » Fri May 03, 2024 3:11 pm

Any thoughts for the team on Saturday? I am not sure the team is looking better with Fofana in it, but there is a decent argument to be made about going more attacking against an Eddie Howe side.

I was thinking we might see Koleosho return to the bench, but I couldn't pick him out on the training pictures released on the club website (could always be keeping their cards close to their chest of course).

Hoping we can get something from this game, but we really can't afford to be giving away any sloppy chances to them. Especially with the likes of Isak, Wilson, Barnes and Gordon waiting to pounce.

I know VK will need a master class by our defense. We will get chances to score but will have to take the majority if we want to win

They have an excellent press so it's vital we don't take too long on the ball. If it needs to go long so be it. As always for me that means we should play a front 2 of Foster and Jay Rod but the chances of that are slim to none.

I hope Fofana doesn’t start - been well off it for a long while now IMO. For me, Foster through the middle, possibly Brownhill in and Odobert/JBL wide.

Taylor at left back would be a good starting point

11 players all playing in their preferred positions would be a good starting point!!

Hope its same starting 11 as last week v Man Utd, except for Amdouini coming in for Forfana and Foster playing the No 9. Fofana can come on to replace either Foster or Amdouini from the bench, depending on how either are playing. Think Amdouini's confidence will be good after winning and converting the pen last week, and I think he is our best finisher and we will create chances that need sticking in

Tbf, despite us actually playing pretty well over the past 8 games, neither Fofana or Foster have looked great. In his defence Foster can point to returning from injury (is he 100% fit?) and more importantly not being played in his preferred position, so I'd get him down the middle and leave Fofana on the bench. That way we can actually play a proper right winger on the right wing (or even Vitihno if VK wants to). Plus Fofana won't be here much longer anyway.

Agree, Odobert on the left, Brun Larsen on the right.
That team can get a result against Newcastle.

Odobert is dangerous coming off the left. Please can someone tell our manager.

I think pace is our weapon. Newcastle will cause us lots of problems when they go forward but we need to try and isolate Burn and exploit his lack of pace when we counter.

Sorry, but won’t be watching this one live.

Too much nerves I’m afraid, plus I seriously hate Newcastle

So I’ll be tuning in around 16.45 hoping for a positive result - UTC

Muric
Assignon O'Shea Esteve Taylor
Cullen Berge
Vitinho Brownhill JBL
Foster

I don't think Fofana has been great for a while now and Odobert doesn't offer much in a central role.

I suspect it'll be Fofana though with Vitinho at left back

Newcastle pressed us and exploited our weakness as well as anyone this season.

Muric can help remedy that but we have to retain possession if we're to commit platers up them pitch.

JBG comes into it for me for that reason and I'd have Odobert on the left or not on at all.

For the first time this season, it's genuinely in our own hands, win our games and we're safe.

Scoring against the better teams in the division hasn't really been a problem for us. Stopping them scoring rather more than us has. Plus we have a huge tendency to gift wrap at least one and present it to them. If we can address that, we've a chance.

We could win all three of our games and go down if Forest get 7 more points. It isn’t in our hands.

Burnley v Forest as the last game of the season means that situation is impossible.

One of our games is against Forest, so if we win all our games, they could only get 6 more points

I agree it's anything but we are completely dependent on forest dropping points to have any real chance. I think some people got giddy last night after the Luton draw & discovered where the xmas sherry was hiding with it's all in our hands nonsense.

Clatter Gordon asap. Midfield.
Then again...
Wipe him out.

Before he cheats yet another Penalty.

He needs levelling up....taking down.

(sorry but I despise this player).

It is impossible to win our three games and Forest to get 7 points. Because we play them. So, arbitrary, farcical points appeal decisions aside, it very much is.

You say that aside but whatever decision is reached it could prove crucial & that being the case if points are reinstated it's game over in terms of catching them. You can't just decide that something doesn't exist to win an argument the fact is it does exist & it's not your decision to make.

Ha, you're all correct. I'd manage to completely forget we play Forest. Put that down to a blurry Saturday morning.
