Anyone still holding out hope

Post by SydneyClaret » Wed May 08, 2024 3:16 am

Been around long enough to know that any result is possible where Burnley are concerned. I genuinely believe we can beat Spurs this weekend and take it to the final day. Anyone else with me or is it all doom and gloom.

Spurs are not in great form conceding an average of 2 goals per game … That’s where the optimism ends for me and I’m not sure how weare going to cope with Maddison or Son etc

Nope, we've won 5 all season and you're hoping for 2 in a week! No chance

Not really. Can't see us keeping a clean sheet or getting 3pts at Spurs, plus Luton & Nottingham F have a better chance of picking up wins in their last 2 fixtures.

Would be devastating to win both then have Luton pip us.

Just hope we give it a fighting go on Saturday and not just let Spurs tickle our tummies...or a dodgy ref decision..

There’s a tiny bit in there holding out, but being realistic I’m looking forward to a fresh start in the Championship, it’s a more exciting league.

Stranger things have happened, we needed snookers to stay in the league versus Orient so there is a precedence, however I think Forest at home v Chelsea is very winnable for them,Spurs will beat us despite our good cup performance there.

It’s terrific that there is still a chance of staying up this late in the season. Hopefully we will go for it against Spurs and other results go our way to make for an exciting final game.

We will survive .Jayrod and Foster up front.
Benny wide right.Jack Cork instead of Brownhill we need more nouse.Tackle Madison well away from our penalty area as he's a cheat and will go down if he feels breath on himself.
I was there when a very poor side beat Spurs in the Cup and I believe we we will beat them again

after this season, whilst I know that we could get a win at Spurs (I'm going so hope we do!), I dont think VAR; the officials; other results will be in our favour so whilst there is a slim chance and some hope, I think not.

I think it's a bit late for hope. We'll get chances against Spurs but we'll also give them plenty as well. Best I can see is a score draw, and even if we manage a win, I suspect Luton are better positioned to catch Forest. I must say I wouldn't begrudge Luton if they stayed up at the expense of Forest. Rob Edwards has done a terrific job.

I’m hopeful because I think Chelsea will beat Forest and Luton will drop points. We can beat Spurs and then it’s a cup final. The biggest concern may yet bet overturning the 6 goal difference with Luton if they get a draw at the Hammers because Fulham are the last team I’d want to rely on for a favour.

Yep, now Forest have been told to “do one”, and with them playing later on Saturday we have to go for it…………..totally and utterly………at least they’re playing Chelsea who do have something to play for………

Chelsea should win, they are trying to make Europe and are on a good run. Sadly we are 3 points short of where we needed to be. Will those 3 points come back on Saturday? We played well at Chelsea, Liverpool, Villa, Man Utd and Arsenal. Could have won some of them. So it is possible. But even if we find the net for once we aren’t getting decisions, really bad decisions costing us in 5 of the last 7 games like the penalty claim last Saturday, the penalty dive by Chelsea, the penalty claim vs Brighton, ours all stonewall. So no, I don't have much hope.

The only hope I have is that the close season will be managed well and produces a solid competitive squad in mid August.
Some robust sense checks have to be applied to VK in the recruitment market. My hope is that Alan Pace and his team show strong leadership.

I know Spurs have been dreadful lately, but this is a fixture to appease their fans and we might be on the end of a beating sadly. Our performance Saturday v possibly the weakest startng 11 Newcastle put out all season, knocked my confidence. Up to then I thought it was still possible

We are 12th in the form league and Spurs are 17th.

We played very well against them down there in the FA cup back in January losing 1-0.

Forest play Chelsea later on the day who just thrashed West Ham 5-0.

It's a very tall order to escape the drop but not an impossibility.

So, YES! :geek:

Our season will be over by 3.30 on Saturday. We cannot handle Son or Maddison and I fear they will run riot against our shambles of a defence.

More likely to lose 5-0 than win or even draw. Think Chelsea will beat Forest but also expect Luton to win Less than 1% chance of survival imo

The hope for West Ham is that it’s Moyes’s last home game and both the fans and Moyes will be over the moon about it. Let’s hope they have the champers after the game and roar their team to victory. Bowen was unlucky in the Chelsea farce so let’s hope he’s playing.

Chelsea are rampant atm and I’d expect them to dispatch Forest without too much fuss . West Ham at home should also beat Luton but it’s a tricky one . Remarkable that if we beat Spurs and the other 2 lose on Sat , safety is actually in our hands .
On that note I hear the Fat Lady is booked into sing at FT at Spurs .

I said possibly the weakest starting 11 Newcastle had put out this season, and stand by that. Thats different to saying it was a weak starting line up, which is what you quote. I know its all relative, but did we exploit those new guys at the back

In order to beat Spurs away we need to confuse them by our team selection: I would play a right hand sided midfielder at left back and keep a good defensive left back on the bench, I would then take our best left winger and play him in some new position somewhere in midfield in a position he or his team mates don't understand. This would leave a gap on the left, which could be filled by our captain midfielder. This would confuse Spurs and allow us to score loads of goals.

As bad as it was on Saturday its no wonder the players' head went down. They had made a good start pressing back a top 6 team in first 20 minutes but without being able to get the breakthrough they deserved. When Guimeres pushed over Assignon in the area we shoudve had a penalty but as usual the ref didnt see it and VAR saw it but decided not to intervene for some reason. A 2 hands push in the back at the Etihad, Anfield or Emirates would see the referee racing in to award a penalty to Pep, Klopp or Arteta.

This set back was then punished with a swift incisive break which ended with Wilson doing what he does best - putting the ball in the Burnley net. (I correct myself because the best thing he does is hurl himself to the ground and roll if someone breathes on him). TBF to the ref he saw through this and gave him a yellow card.

This lifted Newcastle and they smelled blood and their squad costing £425 million ripped into us and pressurised us into making mistakes and at 3-0 that was game up before half time. Confidence just fell away and the touch and control of some players was very poor.

The only thought is that this team took points away at Chelsea and Man United and shouldve beaten Brighton and Wolves at home recently so maybe not as bad as we think.

There will be some that have to go but it must be carefully considered in both financial terms and also taking into account the best players for next season. Some of the high earners will probably go and the plan to give youth a chance will no doubt continue. A massive clearout could be more problematic than we imagine. Some kind of stability is required.

I'd suggest anyone who thinks we will get something at Spurs may have watched the Newcastle game, but hope that we might play differently and recognise that two games are often not the same.
