The supporters were, rightly, up in arms about it too. As with a lot of bad ideas it was the work of one man: The criminal Robert Maxwell.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu May 09, 2024 10:10 pmBack in the 1980's it was, I think that Reading and Oxford United were considering merging under the new name of Thames Valley Royals.

However, a word in Robert Maxwell's defence: We now have his grandiose, delinquent and transparent machinations to thank for the FA bringing about rules to prevent crooks like him from buying shares in multiple league teams.

Probably me getting mixed up with the tale and who was on which side but that was the essence of what he said!Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Thu May 09, 2024 10:01 pmWrighty crossed from the left wing for Weller's winner. I was behind the goal watching it. The equaliser by Davis might just be the best headed goal I've ever seen.

Grew up down the road from, and used to play as a kid with Phil Whitehead, who made over 200 appearances as keeper for Oxford Utd. I recall he got me a free ticket for Halifax Town at the Turf, then made a bit of a howler for the Clarets' winner.

Thanks for that Stan. I think I’m about 3 or 4 paces behind you today so thanks for helping me out on these issues today.Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Thu May 09, 2024 11:36 pmI literally posted the Youtube footage of the goals underneath my reply.
Two fantastic late goals from the Clarets. Bet you had a great day out.

I remember that game, I was 19 at the time and went with my old man. A hat-trick from Paul Moody and the late Joey Beauchamp scored one of the other 2. Standing in a paddock on terracing from memory?dougcollins wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 9:21 pmNot sure if it's the last time we played them, but the last time I went we got battered 5-0.
That was the old Manor Ground at Headington.

Re: Oxford United
Yes definitely one of Robert Maxwells ideas, not the clubs.
Oxford Utd does have a colourful and great history. They would have played in Europe after winning the league cup in 1986, but were denied because of the ban after Heysel.

Re: Oxford United
Was a battle won by the supporters of the two clubs to prevent the Maxwell merger. He then got control of Derby and decided to move players there from Oxford. A bit like Watford do now I suppose with Udinese.hetheclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2024 9:25 amYes definitely one of Robert Maxwells ideas, not the clubs.

Oxford's recent success is all the more sweeter given Swindon's recent troubles.

Why did you start supporting Burnley?hetheclaret wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 9:38 pmI grew up just outside of Oxford and still live there - Oxford Burnley hasn’t happened since I started supporting the clarets, would love it if they met in the league. Oxford are my no.2 team
It’s a great club that has suffered at the hands of a rotten owner for many years - long after he actually sold the club.
Once they get their new stadium they have a bright future.
