Jacob Brunn Larsen

Too good for the Championship and can't see how he'd fancy a season there with us.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
As with Tresor, I wondered if the clause only applies if we stayed up.
The Athletic reported yesterday that Tresor’s clause had been activated, so maybe not in his case. However, JBL’s clause was also reported as mandatory when he signed, but that seems less certain now, hence me thinking it was contingent on survival.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Putting my optimistic hat on, he’s struggled for form & fitness across the past 2/3 seasons and not found a ‘home’. From interviews I’ve seen / other noises (his instagram) he has seemed to be really enjoying playing football again and is very thankful to Kompany. I think he might want to stay but wages could be an issue.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
I'd like to see him stay but it will depend not just on whether he wants to, but what the terms of the loan to buy clause are (no-one on this forum really knows), how much the club want him, if so, what fee and terms can be agreed, it will depend no doubt on whether other clubs want him and which other players are sold / released to reduce the wage bill etc.. While we are seemingly overloaded with wide players, he is almost certainly an upgrade on Zaroury...and younger than JBG who will be 34 next season.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Good yes and could play up front with a larger ball winner but an upgrade on Zaroury who was a star in the Championship before VK fell out with him this season?
Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Watkins was Villa's leading scorer with 14 goals in his first season there.NewClaret wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 7:18 pm“Foster another season gone by”…
Can I have some of what you’re smoking?
He signed last January. He barely played last year and he has had personal issues this year. He’s played one full season.
Where does this impatience come from? How long did Villa have to wait for Watkins to have a good year? I could list so many more. It’s extremely rare players are bought and make an immediate impact at any club.
But I think it is different for players coming from overseas.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Sometimes you can tell if a player's got something about them very quickly. Sometimes you think you can tell but get it wrong - for example I still feel like there's a good player in Samuel Bastien but would struggle to explain why.
Larsen stood out to me immediately, he's so well rounded, not the best winger at any individual attribute except perhaps finishing, but 2-3rd at everything. Two footed, decent pace, decent height, decent dribbling, despite his assists tally he can cross/pass and take a pretty good deadball, can get in behind with his runs quite cleverly, is usually okay with defensive contributions (though not always).
I felt and still feel he should have featured more in the first half of the season if he was fit enough to play, and that him and Benson at the same time would have been the closest we had to Benson/Tella. I'd rather keep him in the Championship than a lot of our other new recruits.

He’s been linked to Everton and West Ham this morning
Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
He's certainly looked more at home in the PL than most of our recruits last summer. If there's a possibility of us signing him for a smallish fee and he fancies dropping down a league then we should look to make that happen.spt_claret wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 12:16 pmSometimes you can tell if a player's got something about them very quickly. He's a bit of a JBG type, and by that I mean a solid, tidy footballer. I don't think he's got a particular "stand-out" trait (Tella had explosive pace for example) and as such you're "well rounded" description suits him well. I think he'd really show his quality given the extra time and space he'd get in the Championship.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Everton seems like a no brainer. I've said a few times he's the perfect Dyche winger. Works hard, doesn't lose the ball in silly areas and has good end product. Also looks like a good character.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 12:53 pmHe’s been linked to Everton and West Ham this morning
They need depth on the cheap. I'd be surprised if they weren't in for him.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Did he join in the premier league?
He’s been fairly hit & miss there since though I’d say (without looking at the stats).
Agree about foreign players taking longer to adjust and many of them are much younger too.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Agree entirely, it's why I've been frustrated at times that he's been kept wide and we've crowbarred Odobert into the middle or moved Foster wide. To me he's got everything to play the central role either in attacking midfield or as an emergency as a striker, at least moreso than Odobert who always looks best wide. Versatile, which is one of JBGs best qualities too.jlup1980 wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 12:54 pmHe's certainly looked more at home in the PL than most of our recruits last summer. I could absolutely see him at a Dyche type side and would be very disappointed if we don't retain him, but he's done enough to get another season at PL level so doesn't surprise me there's interest.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Yep the 14 was in his first season in the EPL after joining Villa.
He’s had an excellent scoring record since joining them for a team who traditionally have not been in the top 6.
I’m not sure there is a forward outside the usual top 6 teams with a better record over the last 4 years for goals and assists.
Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Yep. He's been pretty consistent there. 14,11, 15 and 19 goals. Top scorer each season, I assume the blip was when Gerrard was in charge.

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Fair enough, that’s a decent record. I’ve always just felt he’s not very prolific and all the media rhetoric has seemed to be about his scoring droughts, etc. obviously doesn’t marry up with the facts though.

I just never feel worried when we play him. Don’t feel he’s particularly clinical, fast, or big threat in the air. That’s not to say he’s not decent in all aspects of his game, I just never feel the fear I do with the majority of Premier League strikers/goalscorers. A bit like how I never fear a Championship striker, but obviously his record is better than I thought.

There are certain players where a big effort is needed to move them on, where applicable gain a fee. There are others where a big effort is needed to ensure they stay next season-he is one of them, and I feel he can develop and flourish in the Championship

Re: Jacob Brunn Larsen
Good player, done a good job for us but in certain ways I am not too fussed if we don't manage to retain him. He suits us in this league as he is a bit more discplined and less gung-ho than most wingers, but in The Championship we are going to be dominating the ball in >95% of games and can probably allow ourselves to play someone more incisive (i.e, Tella, Benson, Zaroury historically). Kompany would probably be more trusting of playing the likes of Tresor at that level, and he is someone it seems we have already signed and need to start to extract value from. Koleosho will be fit again too, of course and then we still (as it stands) have Benson and Zaroury - I assume Odobert will be sold.

Why would Odebert be sold ? hes got a long deal and we need to keep all our proven players.

I really hope we have an option to buy on JBL, irrelevant to any other clubs.

Isn’t our option 4m, don’t imagine anyone playing 9m for him with only 12 months left on his contract regardless of how good I think he has been for us

I 100% agree ans maybe over the next 12 months he'll be sold but not now, he won't be sold this summer he hasn't played enough games and will of only just returned from a massive injury
