Dara Costelloe
I wonder what the future holds for him.
I was impressed by him early last season when he seemed to just slot in and take first team football in his stride.
Just shows you how hard it is to make it in English football. Still only 21 so hopefully gets another chance in the Championship whether that’s with us or someone else.

Re: Dara Costelloe
Played a fair amount of football with other clubs but has he improved since being with us? Cannot afford ( literally) to be carrying any passengers next season. Sounds harsh but it is professional football.

He didn't take it in his stride at all. He ended up disappointing and rightly lost his place.helmclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2024 8:59 pmI wonder what the future holds for him.

I haven't heard anyone say that it was a mistake to send him out on loan, either last season or this one.

Bradford City supporting mate said he was useless on loan for them. Suspect he won't be with us for long

I’m not suggesting he should be involved with us next season but he’s been on the bench for us 7 times in the PL so must have something about him.

Re: Dara Costelloe
It’s such a massive step up to where we now play.
I look at our current Under 21s- who are a brilliant side- but don’t think any of them will end up with our first team.
When Massengo played for them, he was head and shoulders the best on the pitch, but he struggles to make our first team bench.

Did much better North of the border on loan by all accounts.
I recall he had a decent first touch and movement, ok dribbling but his passing/crossing/finishing was some way off.
Hopefully he continues to improve.

Hopefully we can sell him .. he didn’t cost a lot but the squad needs trimming and i don’t see the point in keeping him

Does it? Or does it just mean there we had nobody else to fill the spaces?helmclaret wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 6:35 amI’m not suggesting he should be involved with us next season but he’s been on the bench for us 7 times in the PL so must have something about him.
On those benches we also had players like Thomas, Mancini, McGlynn & Dodgson

Our fans seem obsessed with nostalgia. Our squad including players out on loan is nearing 40 and some readers claiming Costelloe can play a part next season. Easy when its not your money paying the wages. The restructuring and culling of our squad needs to start Monday morning

Re: Dara Costelloe
I thought he was unlucky not to grab a few goals for us early on last season, and it wasn’t through lack of effort.
He’s probably not going to make the grade for us going forwards, though.

Re: Dara Costelloe
Felt a bit sorry for DC as he was nowhere near ready for the step up from U23’s to high end Championship. I’m sure he was thrown in due to our own injuries or lack of player in his position ? Seems to have been involved in most match day squads in his loan spells so presume he’s certainly got a reasonable career ahead of him . Maybe a decent div 1/2 player which is a fantastic achievement for any footballer .

I keep seeing calls on here for Mellon to be part of our squad next season but it's Costelloe who has been given the game time at Dundee.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 10:56 amFelt a bit sorry for DC as he was nowhere near ready for the step up from U23’s to high end Championship. What is it then?
Clearly not up to it at a decent level. Dropped by Bradford and Dundee.

He was playing v Rangers the other day , you’re aware he’s had his season split between 2 clubs and managed around ? 30 appearances combined ( subs /starts etc )Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 11:55 amWhat is it then?

Re: Dara Costelloe
Fifteen appearances for Dundee, albeit just eight of them starts. I know it's a lower level in Scotland but it's still a decent level that he clearly is up to. One thing that was for certain, he had to go out on loan this season because he'd outgrown our under-21s as had Owen Dodgson.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 11:55 amWhat is it then?

Imagine like many of our other fringe players he’ll be shipped out this summer. Squad and wage bill is far too big to carrying fringe players like Costelloe.

Re: Dara Costelloe
Dundee fans are a little undecided on him from what I’ve seen. Seems as if they’d welcome him back next season for his pace but lacks end product .
From other bits I’ve seen, the general consensus is that they’d have Mellon back but would like to see more of him.
Dodgson apparently struggled at first but has developed rather quickly and impressed at times , another that they’d like to see back.

do you reckon Dodgson will be kept next season with the first team or sent out again ?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 12:01 pmFifteen appearances for Dundee, albeit just eight of them starts. Re: Dara Costelloe
Not a clue - hardly seen anything of him in the last season and a half because of his loans but the opinion seems to be that he's improved significantly in that time and he's still just 21.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 2:19 pmdo you reckon Dodgson will be kept next season with the first team or sent out again ?
18 games in League 2
10 games in League 1
15 games in Scottish Premiership
He has another year on his contract so hopefully he'll get more game time next season, here or on loan, and continues to improve.

Re: Dara Costelloe
Today for Dundee
Owen Dodgson - full game
Dara Costelloe - on as a substitute at half time
Michael Mellon - unused sub

Re: Dara Costelloe
We've really ballsed up Mellon's season. He's gone from playing and scoring every week to not getting a game.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 3:12 pmToday for Dundee

You'd think if they were going to move his club then they'd get some reassurances about game time beforehand.
Re: Dara Costelloe
It'd save us a lot of money if we could go into the season with Taylor/Dodgson as left backs and beyer/new guy from psv as right backs.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 2:24 pmNot a clue - hardly seen anything of him in the last season and a half because of his loans but the opinion seems to be that he's improved significantly in that time and he's still just 21.

Be a bit of a risk but would allow us to spend money elsewhere.

Re: Dara Costelloe
It's a shame really for Michael Mellon - first half of the season he'd twenty starts and three sub appearances in League Two, scoring 13 goals. Then he's gone up to Dundee and started just three games with eleven sub appearances, and scored three goals. He is, of course, younger than the other two but he could have been playing regular football in the second half of the season.
Re: Dara Costelloe
Dodgson with two assists against Rangers, really impressive first 45 minutes until their entire team seem to fade badly and shipped a few second half.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 2:24 pmNot a clue - hardly seen anything of him in the last season and a half because of his loans but the opinion seems to be that he's improved significantly in that time and he's still just 21.

Will that have been Charlie Adam's doing? Whoever it was has done a particularly crap job in this instanceClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 3:29 pmIt's a shame really for Michael Mellon - first half of the season he'd twenty starts and three sub appearances in League Two, scoring 13 goals. I think Charlie Adam had some input in this alliance with Dundee but not in the players going there. He left for Fleetwood on New Year's Eve and the loans were all done in the following month.

Re: Dara Costelloe
Sounds like three young players plying their trade. Dodgson appears to come out of it with credit; Mellon sounds like lack of game time has held him back; Costelloe has at best been 'treading water'.
