Track record in appointing managers

As a club we must have one of the best track records in appointing managers out there. I can’t think of a single club to rival it.

One bad appointment since the turn of the century in Laws.

In that time we’ve sacked two managers I think? Laws and Dyche?

At this level, that is unbelievable. Watford can beat that in a single season, and by Christmas.

Let’s hope to continue the streak.

The board did pretty well with Laws - they had a matter of days to find a manager with a Burnley connection and get him in place before the transfer window closed. Then he bought Dean Marney - so not all bad

Add to that the job Cotterill did when we were skint, and the period under Howe when we brought in some amazing talent at little or no cost (I appreciate some poor buys too). Lets hope the trend continues

Another two, VK and Coyle, each gave us one fantastic season followed by disappointment. Cotterill and Howe were certainly not failures but I would not call them resounding successes either. Laws gets a lot of stick but it was very much a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show. So all-in-all I agree we’ve done well with the appointments made.

An accurate summary of the last 20-25 years, in my opinion. We have a tendency to get carried away with emotions but I pretty much agree with this overview.

It is a really good point and for all the talk about VK in or out, we are generally a more loyal bunch to our managers than most fan bases. Other stadiums would have been totally toxic by January if they were having the season we just had.

Spot on - Benson and Cavanagh should never, ever have been given the job

I'd put him second to Benson and both only got the job because they were here when the managers who brought them in left.

Straight question …… do we think VK was a good fit for our Club?
I was never in favour of him and in truth he was always going to use the Club as a stepping stone. He never intended staying in it for the long haul. I had to eat humble pie after last season. But it really has been a tale of two seasons and I would say he has been extremely lucky. I’m amazed Bayern Munich have him on their hit list never mind the top of their hit list!
Yes……. Let’s hope for a new manager who can do a good job …. And one who is a good fit!

To be fair, any young manager coming here is using our club as a stepping stone to better things. And you can't blame anyone for going to Bayern Munich. Many of the current bunch of EPL managers would jump at the job. Dyche would have ditched us too, and not for one of the biggest clubs in the world. He would have ditched us for a club like the one he is currently managing, and I, for one, wouldn't have held it against him.

He did a reasonable job for us the season we were the one of the best teams in the division

Laws was the only bad appointment since the turn of the century for me although he did sign Marney. As much as I don’t like how VK has acted, he rebuilt us and blew the championship away. Shame he went on to undo it all.

Laws got a very rough deal.
Coyle took the whole back room staff leaving him nothing and little time to fix it. He also took two loan players due to come to us in January Stuart Holden and Jack Wilshere to Bolton instead.
Laws had a week to appoint backroom staff and find players willing to come to club destined for relegation and form a team spirit when he was undermined by senior players who should have known better.
Had we beaten Wigan instead of losing we would have
survived.

I remember going down the Centre Spot when Buchan was appointed for a meet the manager fans forum. I bet Tony was there too. I wasn’t too optimistic after leaving the forum he was the man for the job but expected him to last a bit longer than he did.

One name not mentioned on this thread as yet is Jimmy Mullen. He was instrumental in putting our famous old club back on the map.
A great appointment in my view.

I went to yhat, came out with the usual clichés, sleeping giant, no longer a rest home, back to where we belong etc etc, I remember thinking where I have i heard all this before...oh yes from all the previous failed managers.

Possibly however I think the last straw was away at Chester (we lost 4-0) and as he was walking down the “tunnel” someone spat in his face. I think he resigned after that match.
