Clint Eastwood turns 94
Clint Eastwood turns 94
A day late but that matters little.
Clint Eastwood is the last man standing of a distant era.
Although a regular box office big hitter, he was more or less constantly panned by the critics.
Not sure many people could have imagined him becoming a director let alone one who would turn out 30 films many of them well received by most critics.
Quote from a New Yorker journalist:
"He is one of few top Hollywood actors to have also become a critically and commercially successful director. The New Yorker's David Denby wrote that, unlike Eastwood, John Ford appeared in just a few silent films; Howard Hawks never acted in movies. Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Spencer Tracy, James Stewart, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, Steve McQueen, and Sean Connery never directed a feature. John Wayne directed only twice, and badly; ditto Burt Lancaster. Paul Newman, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Robert De Niro, and Sean Penn have directed a few movies each, with mixed commercial and artistic success."
The word "icon" has long since formed part of the cliché lexicon. However, this man is truly iconic.

"To be honest, I've kind of forgotten myself..." I think we can mark these words as prescient of anyone who has reached their 10th decade.

A fistful of dollars
The good the bad and the ugly
For a few dollars more
To name but a few, I love all his westerns.

That is why most film fans ignore critics.
A superstar both sides of the camera. Not a great actor but he made movies that the public wanted at the time they wanted them. Wonderful director.

Gran Tourismo is actually a brilliant film and up there with his early (fantastic!) stuff. Superb talent.

It’s the grave marked Unknown, next to Archie Stanton. Tuco wasn’t happy after he just dug up Arch Stanton.

Also the end scene with Clint, Tuco and Lee van Cleef stood in that circle ready to draw is epic . Ennio Morricone superb.

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson is a superb film. Love Tom Hanks too, mind.
Re: Clint Eastwood turns 94
I wouldn't call him a great actor in that he did tend to play each role in the same laconic, expression-less manner.
I don't think John Wayne was a great actor but can you take him out of American cinematic history?
However, CE had screen charisma and, to a lesser extent than John Wayne, Hollywood without him would seem to have been missing something.
Far better director IMHO. But it is art and thus subjective.

Re: Clint Eastwood turns 94
I love Eastwood he’s brilliant. As a director Gran Torino is brilliant l. So many good movies as an actor
Watched Cry Macho the other night. It’s an ok film which he acts and directs. Nothing special. It was funny though, Eastwood was playing a character that needed to be about 20 years younger. He pulls this lass in it that must be 30 years younger than him. Eastwoods saggy arse didn’t suit the role and it was quite comical

Re: Clint Eastwood turns 94
Yes.
Remember the theme tune.

Re: Clint Eastwood turns 94
Great song sung by Frankie Laine
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Rawhide
Keep rollin', rollin', rollin'
Though the streams are swollen
Keep them dogies rollin' rawhide
Through rain and wind and weather
Hell-bent for leather
Wishin' my gal was by my side
All the things I'm missin'
Good vittles, love, and kissin'
Are waiting at the end of my ride
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Head 'em up, move 'em on
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Rawhide
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, cut 'em out
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in
Rawhide
Keep movin', movin', movin'
Though they're disapprovin'
Keep them dogies movin', rawhide
Don't try to understand 'em
Just rope, and throw, and brand 'em
Soon we'll be living high and wide
My heart's calculatin'
My true love will be waitin'
Be waiting at the end of my ride
Move 'em on, head 'em up
Head 'em up, move 'em on
Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, ride 'em in
Cut 'em out, cut 'em out
Ride 'em in, rawhide
Rawhide (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Rawhide

Re: Clint Eastwood turns 94
Didn't realise Clint Eastwood was a real character, always thought he was a fictional movie cowboy character, a bit like Billy the Kid.
