Yes I think it was circa 1973. Someone must have stolen the Bronze plaque showing that it was proudly opened by HRH The Duke of Endinburgh, as would befit a magnificent feat of civil engineering. Somebody was that annoyed that this subway has been closed that they decided to set fire to a double decker bus at the bus station yesterday.

From the Burnley Civic Trust photo archive:
“The Centenary Way pedestrian subway may be in operation by the end of February 1974. Although work is progressing "slowly" according to a local corporation spokesman, 75 per cent of the subway is complete. Workmen are putting finishing touches to the ramp on the bus station side, and tiling contractors will be brought in next week. The contractors for the job are John Swales Limited.”
