Vin Garbutt sadly died.

We saw him perform about a month before he did die a real shock although his tales of his heart problems were made of ledgens.

I do, but not for his singing ... a fine Prop forward for Calder Vale RUFC ( now Burnley RUFC ) back in the day, played against him many times .. and on this occasion, in 1991, with him for the Anti-Assassins Club. An 18 year old Will Greenwood ( England World Cup winner 2003 ) is 2nd left on the back row .... Roger, on the back row far right in the red shirt !

We first saw Grace Petrie at Sidmouth about 4 years ago introduced by Atilla the Stockbroker and will see her again this Friday at the Phoenix in Exeter. Is she folk well if folk music is about protest then she certainly is.

Loudon has done some great songs over the years, many very tongue in cheek. For anybody into folk music, there's an excellent BBC concert (nicely filmed/ good sound) on You Tube with him + the wonderful Richard Thompson + the very good Suzanne Vega - recorded live at Bush Hall (just round the corner from the away end at QPR). Terrific set of songs from all three (different personalities all v talented). I come back to this many times over the years.
There's a brief intro but the songs start about 45 seconds in.

Nice!

What's that small screen at the end of the neck of Thompson's guitar that flashes red or green - e.g. at 27.12 it has a red 'E'. Something that shows the key he is in perhaps but it keeps changing during a single song?

That's just his clip-on tuner so he can keep each string in tune during the performance. As the humidity/temperature changes during the show, they'll need retuning. If you leave them switched on whilst playing, they flash all sorts of messages as the chords played change, should really flick it off when not in use - save the batteries.

Just found this little film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOlunxBdw2M

It's introduced by Ian A Anderson ('A' presumably to define him from the Jethro Tull front man) who is himself a folk singer and founder of the folk record label 'Village Thing'.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Village_Thing

I had two or three Village Thing albums back in the day.

Check out the video poster Vulturama's other videos for more folk stuff.

Some years ago I saw on TV a tribute to Gerry Rafferty. There were two outstanding contributions to my ears:

Rab Noakes - Moonlight and Gold:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1A0n1U7fOo

James Vincent McMorrow - My Singing Bird:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Yf2zVFC4U
Hi Hipper,

Thank you for your recommendation of Rab Noakes. Very pleasant song.

Have shared with a friend who loves folk music. He likes GR but hadn't heard of Rab Noakes. He loves this version.

Another film, Acoustic Routes, about Bert Jansch and including a number of folkies and folk haunts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DONv5nqjbsE

It's introduced by Billy Connolly, presumably because he was famous, but I think it spoils it a bit. Still, listening to Bert reminiscing and playing, and some of the other characters, makes up for it.

Big fan of Show of Hands. Although I think Arrogance Ignorance & Greed might be their most pointed/best song.
I love folk music in general, go to folk gigs/festivals pretty regularly, so may as well throw out a few artists I like that haven't been mentioned yet for anyone who might not know them:

Martin Simpson mostly does covers or traditional arrangements but he's worth a listen.
Steve Tilston has a few songs I like, his 2016 album Truth To Tell is pretty good.
Bellowhead are good, John Boden has some good solo work independent of them.
Oysterband have quite a few tracks I like although if you're purists they're more folk rock.
Quite rate Gavin Davenport too, he's not very well known and hasn't recorded anything in a long while but for me deserves more acclaim. British Man Of War, False Knight, and Wooden Swords & May Queens are probably my 3 favourite songs of his.
For younger acts, I saw a trio called Granny's Attic a few years back when they looked like they were all still in school/6th form but already doing festivals (albeit the smaller tents), I can see them being very big on the scene if they keep at it.

But the guy I always recommend is Martyn Joseph. He's sometimes been called the Welsh Springsteen which I'm not sure is right, he does have a few heartland/folk-rock type numbers but he's definitely more on the folk end than Springsteen or indeed Mellencamp. Has a few Christian songs which won't be everyone's bag (although most of them are more implicit than in your face) but he's a brilliant storytelling songwriter.
I live in Exmouth and Show of Hands are from round here Steve (Exmouth) Phil (Topsham) but become a fan before I moved here.
I'm not a folk fan as such and always say SOH aren't that folkey.
Seen them live many times and never disappoint. Sadly they are retiring as a duo and saw them for the last time last month at the Minack Theatre which was as good a place as any to say a fond farewell to a fabulous band and I will miss them.
Arrogance Ignorance & Greed is indeed a pointed and relevant even today though it was penned after the banking crash and one of my favourites.

Great memories of Roger at the Falcon on a Wednesday night from memory.
It was a bit of a ex St Teds Fenian stronghold and remember one night when Roger got fed up of too many of the pub clientele chatting instead of listening and brought his guitar and came over to sit with us and give us a personal gig as we always joined in with his songs.

Should have done what Jackie Leven (god rest his soul) used to do. He was at Otley folk club and stopped playing as people were talking. They all stopped apart from one guy who continued unaware, so Jackie gently put down his guitar and strolled over. He got hold of the guy by the scruff of his fancy Canadian jacket, lifted his feet off the floor, and with his face 6" away said to the guy 'Would you mind leaving'?

The guy left.

I’ve been following this fella for 20years over here. First album Folk, Soul and Rock’n’Roll I loved but a family member said he needs to find a genre. Well his latest album Ritual is pure Irish folk. This is the standout track, Stonemason. He gets over to the UK regularly so try and catch him.

I was aware of his history but I wouldn't describe him as a 'famous folkie' (would you describe Steve Martin as a famous folkie?). Connolly is a famous comedian who was a folkie but recognised he wasn't good enough. The average person probably doesn't know that and will not have heard of most of the others who appear in this film except for BC.

Another shout out for Show of Hands, seen them many times. A personal favourite is Cousin Jack - the story of Cornish miners emigrating in search of work. My wife’s community choir now sing it as part of their repertoire.

Saw Steve Kightley from Show of Hands do a mini solo set at Wessex Folk Festival in Weymouth the weekend before last. From September he will be going solo premanently because the pair are retiring Show of Hands permanently due to Phil Beer's health. Tickets for their final tour are almost sold out everywhere. Miranda Sykes, who has appoeared with them regularly over the past 20 years is back on the circuit following ilness and will be appearing locally later in the year.

I think anyone playing with Gerry Rafferty could be classed as good! Billy C was at that time a very good banjo player. You will know his story telling got to be the larger part of his element of the act, which was when the two decided that the act no longer worked.

The reason for leaving was, therefore, not 'not good enough' and instead very good at something else.

Billy carried on in the clubs and pubs until he outgrew them.

Indeed, wasn't it The Humblebums?
Yes. Good in their time.

Another shout out for Show of Hands, seen them many times. A personal favourite is Cousin Jack - the story of Cornish miners emigrating in search of work. My wife’s community choir now sing it as part of their repertoire.
I've only seen them twice; once over 20 years ago at a venue that held about 100-150 people and once maybe 15 years ago at a 1000+ venue when they'd become more popular. I also had (still got) a ticket to see them in Salisbury when the show was cancelled because of illness to one of Steve's kids. They are a great live band with good instrument playing/ arrangements & a great range of songs.

I just checked and I have 9 of their albums (one a double). My favourite is "Country Life" one of the best folk albums you could wish for. I've also got 2 of their "covers" albums - they are particularly good at refreshing fairly well known (other artists')songs and almost making them their own songs.

I think I saw them in shrewsbury over the august bank holiday in 2018 I was son a job at RAF shrawbury and was given a free pass to a festival going at a race track - decent beer music not to my taste

Not everyone's cup of tea but I like Eliza Carthy's music, particularly "Red Rice".

Jimmie Spheeris. Sadly killed in a motorcycle accident in 1984 when only young. This is from 1972.

Saw her live about 10 years ago at Ely Folk Festival, she's great. Her dad's not too shabby either.
Ely's a cracking little festival, not the easiest to get to coming from the north but always a good one. She was meant to play it last year but was sick.
Blackbeard's Tea Party are another I've seen there. Fun group.
