Does anything think that defensively in the second half of the season our corners where a lot better? Also ET the set piece course can can speak French and Dutch I believe so maybe keeping him around might not actually be a bad idea
Me!

I must be the only other one!

I’ve been saying this a while but I thought we looked very solid defending set pieces as the season wore on. It’s this type of thing I don’t really want us to change next year (I.e. switch to man marking) when my eyes at least were telling me we’d got it right.

Someone said on here that we conceded 16, second highest in the league, but I’d like to know how many were first and second half of the year. I thought Assignon - O’Shea - Esteve - Charlie looked very comfortable defending them so maybe it was the players that were the problem and not the coach?!?! (Vitinho, Beyer, Charlie didn’t start the season)

Offensively I also thought we got better as we wore on and stopped the short ones, but nowhere near good enough. We only really had JBG who could deliver a ball. Dara scored a few though. We need a player who can deliver good balls and to be fair that’s not the set piece coach either. That’s why I think Twine has a chance & this new LB looks like he can cross.

I think most French and Dutch people probably speak better English than some natives.

I would agree defensively. Not got any stats to support though. Felt Muric helped quite a bit because he is stockier and comes off his line with more aggression.

At Fulham, Bournemouth and Brugge, his assistant has been Matt Wells with Rob Burch as his goalkeeping coach. However, both are part of Ange Postecoglu's team at Spurs so I would think unlikely to be joining him. We do need a goalkeeping coach though.
Sounds like we need some goalkeepers first !

Yes, should’ve included Muric. That’s why I think we’d be crazy to let him go.

My point was more that the set piece coach seems to have become public enemy number one when I think there’s far more evidence to suggest it was the team available to the manager in the first half of the season and also his own selection mistakes that were leading to the problems. Both of which he corrected to be fair - just far to late.

Apparently rocket science now includes playing 4 tall defenders and having at least 1 with a left foot.

Any news of any other candidates at the training ground today or are we certain now it’s Parker?

It looks like it's going to be Parker, but nothing is certain until the confirmation presser, so he could still yet be lured elsewhere by the prospect of taking over Tottenham's U11's and we could announce it's going to be Michael Jackson (the football coach, not the disgraced singer, he's dead) for the first 6 games of the season and we'll see how it goes and take it from there!!!

Those sorts of negotiations will certainly take a long time to complete.

The cardigan he wore for the 9-0 defeat at Liverpool, the grey number with the white stripes on the left sleeve, cost a cool £950, according to reports.

The more I read this thread the more I think the site needs a juvenile section and message board. It’s tiresome. At least when we have appointed a manager the silliness can move over to the dreaded annual transfer rumours thread.

I think some of the improvements got lost in the emotion of it being such a bad season results wise. The team did improve at set pieces. There were games when you could see a proper structure - not quite Dyche level of organisation but it was improved. Some individuals really grew in performance levels - O'Shea, Cullen. There were positives but they tended to get lost because we were so uncompetitive for much of the season. Agree with all of your post. I would have given Vinny full backing this season so I think the same should apply to his coaches continuing in the same roles.

I’d have been happy with RVN but I’m not really sure why. He’d one season as a first team manager and whilst he won a cup he managed to fall out with all his coaches and the board. Even with the cup success, who is to say he could replicate that in another country?

Parker strikes me as having a massive ego - just my opinion - but he has been there and done it. Yes there are question marks over him at the level above, but I think people are underestimating how hard it is going to be to get back there. Because we’ve had Dyche we’ve got into this mindset of managers staying with us forever. Parker doesn’t have to be the guy forever, but he’s as good a choice as any for now.

Parker was viewed as an inspirational leader on the pitch and was also appointed captain of Newcastle so a massive ego would hardly have helped his cause.
Uniquely, Parker also played for England whilst representing 4 different clubs, including Charlton Athletic.

Managers are just the same as players - success elsewhere doesn't GUARANTEE success at a new club. So many variables at play - will the manager settle, does he have the right environment, is the squad good enough to play his system etc.

Think of the number of players who have one good season and move elsewhere and flop. Managers are much the same.

It's going to be Parker, as a name I'm underwhelmed compared to the more 'illustrious' names we were linked with but the task is the same - 46 games to win enough points to get us promoted.

Every appointment is a risk/gamble/roll of the dice. The squad we have - on paper, which we don't play on - SHOULD be top two. So let's see what happens - if it's all gone to hell in a hand cart by November then we pot Parker and try and go again.

Parker was managing teams expected to win the league and finished 4th and 2nd. Corberan took over teams in the bottom half of the league (20th and 23rd) and took them to the play-offs.

One overachieved, one achieved par at best.
And he'll be managing a team expecting to win the league this season

I like the idea of having Bellamy on his staff to perhaps curtail him a bit or offer another opinion which he clearly is capable of given his fallout with VK…..

Taking 20th place Huddersfield and 23rd placed West Brom to play offs is a much greater achievement than scraping promotion with sides expected to win the league. But for a VAR cock up against Huddersfield Corberan would have a promotion with Huddersfield. If not for a goalkeeper error Parker would have one less.

I know which I consider the greater achievements.

Which is why we shouldn’t give him too long a contract or even at the first sign of success. Hopefully Pace and Co have realised this. We were lucky with VK that miraculously a bigger club wanted him.
