Had several. Sigmoidoscopy is the abbreviated version. Have the sedation - it's faily painless then.

It’s the over thinking about it which is the thing with a colonoscopy . It’s literally nothing like what you’re fearing and it’s as good as painless . I think you can have one of those ( almost useless) sedatives /muscle relaxants .
My main fear was sh1tting all over the place , though the laxative beforehand ensures all is clear !
You’ll breeze it , good luck .

I've had 20+ of these over the past 30 years... As others have said, the prep you have to drink is worse than the procedure... foul tasting stuff, but it usually does the job. I'd recommend the sedative if you have someone who can drive you home as it does pretty much make you forget the procedure. I always take a little chocolate with me, which I eat while in the recovery bed afterwards - it seems to perk me up, anyway! :)
Good luck with yours!

Thankyou everyone for your replies. What a message board this is! I've gone from doom and gloom to feeling very optimistic about this procedure. I'll keep you posted with how I get on.
Just to add, I’d decided to go for sedation although living on my own, that causes issues. I spoke to nurse when I got there and decided to go for the gas & air. There was no pain whatsoever.

Worse is the prep but you will be ok if you don’t move too far from the loo.

But the worst is going into the unknown. That’s what got to me as it did when I had a CT scan, even though I’m the only poster on this board with my own username used for a medical scan.

I hope we’ve all helped to reassure you.

You'll be fine .I've had four and the day before has always been worse for me .Not much food then the XPrep .That stuff is dynamite .You might as well just sit on the bog 'til you're empty .I've only been sedated once but was offered gas and air on the other occasions .Only problem I ever had was that a nurse had to press on my stomach so the operative could get round one of the bends at one point..on reflection the way she did it was quite pleasant !!! When they do it they pump air into your colon to open it up a bit so when they're removing the probe the air comes out with it so be prepared for the possibility of a massive noisy fart. Just found polyps so touch wood OK. Good luck

Hey everyone. Thanks for sharing this sort of stuff. I think it’s incredibly helpful.
Just interested in what prompted you all to have this procedure in the first place.
I ask because I reckon I might have a small issue in that department. A feeling that something just feels different. Not painful but different. No other symptoms at all (blood, diarrhoea etc)
So I’ve had blood tests (PSA normal) and a digital exam (normal) and I wonder if this won’t be the next step. Like I say it’s almost nothing but I’m just wondering if anyone else had similar.
Again, Top marks for discussing topics like this. It’s very helpful.

I've had 3 done. The moviprep that I had the night before certainly cleared me out. Think of a blocked downspout being cleared....
That's the worst bit of having one...... It's the devil's drink!

I remember some years back about one of the several that I had
The consultant asked if I was ok with one of her young doctors performing the procedure (as practise) and of course I agreed
During the procedure they found a polyp which was then cut away with the idea of extraction before doing a biopsy on it
As everything was being removed the young doctor suddenly realised that the polyp had come away from the tweezers (or whatever they were called) and he said "I've lost it"
I replied "Well stick your head up there and find it"
The nurse who was by my side doing observations on me just burst out laughing`

Whilst having a pre procedure check for my first one I was laid down in the fetal position whilst a young Chinese junior doctor was doing the check under the supervision on the specialist. She explained what would happen and just as her fingers entered I said " No matter how much the NHS are paying you, I've got friends who'll pay you treble" The poor girl didn't know what to say.

I really enjoyed mine
The drugs made it feel amazing. I was away with the fairies!

I had the colonoscopy and endoscopy the same day, the worst part is the awful laxative drink.
No problem with the procedure at all. Enjoyed the tea and cheese sandwich an hour after.
You'll be fine, good luck with everything.

Definitely speak to your GP. It is very likely nothing but PSA and digital exam wouldn’t necessarily spot if anything was awry in your large intestine.

In the end I was referred for one because blood tests showed I was anaemic. However I’d half noticed a change in my bowel habits long before then. Then started to feel a bit run down, with hindsight due to the beginnings of anaemia but it came on so slowly over time that I didn’t really think much of it and put it down to getting ‘old’….into my 40s 😂.

It was only much much later when symptoms were more pronounced that my wife practically dragged me to the GP and I was referred for a colonoscopy and they found what was causing it.

I was v lucky and it was caught just in time, but involved a big op and a lot of stress which I might have avoided if I’d gone earlier.

I must stress that there are gazillions of non-scary reasons why you might feel a bit different in there, but always better to be on the safe side.

Absolutely nothing to worry about. I have had two, and it's just no problem at all.
