Pre-Social Media

Post by Andingle » Thu Jul 18, 2024 9:48 am

With talk on the other thread about the old Sports Pink out early Saturday evening after the match , Clubcall , Ceefax ect.
Remember in the mid to late 70s , no Internet websites, no skysports , no mobile phones , no teletext , no regular local radio coverage.
When Burnley played away in midweek , as young lads we wandered around town with 2p pieces and used to go into a phone box to call the home teams reception every 15 mins for the latest score , did anybody else used to do this ?

I grew up in the 80s and so had Radio Lancashire every Saturday afternoon. I can still remember the panic coming over me as that goal action jingle came on!

I don't go that far back but I remember in the 90s using Teletext and using the 'reveal' option. It would show an icon in the corner of the screen if the teletext page had changed. If Burnley's game was the only game on that page, then the Reveal icon would show when a goal had been scored in that game, whilst you were watching TV. That was sometimes more exciting than watching the actual game!

The goal action jingle was nerve shredding until it transpired (sometimes!) that it was for a Clarets goal....
... then joy :D

Back in the 1960s, if we played away midweek, we’d go down to the Turf and someone would come out and give us the result after it had been phoned through. That was the only way to find out. And it was just the result, no scorers or any other info.

On a Saturday we had to wait for the score coming up on the Grandstand teleprinter.

Getting excited because the team in possession after the 'RADIO LANCASHIRE...GOAL ACTION' bit had finished was Burnley, only to then hear "Randall with the ball, passes to Eyres, Eyres loses out and now here come York City...." - my hopes dashed so many times.

Ceefax page 312 in the division 4 days, waiting for it to scroll to, hopefully, some Burnley news was agonising. 😆

I'm convinced it only happened at Burnley games I can't recall the other clubs losing the ball resulting in conceding on the goal action score flash

It still amazes me that the sports pink could be printed with all the reports and scores, distributed to the newsagents all before I got back home from the game. That was the 70s, I bet they'd struggle now to do that.

Repeating partly what I said on the other thread. In the 50s, 5pm on the “wireless” sports report with Eamon Andrew’s. Long before teletext etc. The tone of the announcer’s voice when reading the home team more or less told you whether they had won, drawn or lost.
Before my dad started taking me to games, looking out of the window and seeing the expression on people’s faces was a pretty good way of telling if the Clarets had won or lost!

Living in the North East, from the early 80's we got the Burnley Express posted, usually arrived Wednesday and Saturday. A real pain if it didn't arrive Saturday. Great read in them days.

Began to get expensive in the end, but as the internet evolved it was no longer required.

Sport on Radio 2 was great, but as stated Ceefax and Teletext was a game changer

Living in the South, late sixties through to 80s the Burnley Express, both editions, was the only real source of info. And it was a food source too, Keith McNee and Peter Higgs being quality correspondents. When I started going to games I would get home from the matches to find the team news! Apart from that the only match reports available were when we played southern, mostly London, clubs.

I remember getting a text from the club In the noughties, saying we’d signed Ronaldo. Christ knows what that was about.

When I first moved away and no longer had a season ticket, I would keep up to date with either ceefax or if there was a game, refreshing the BBC Sport page online.

I then went up in the world and bought myself a dongle for my laptop.

We used to go on the stiffs and the latest score used to be announced over the tannoy ,but we new where Peter Higgs and Keith McNee sat and they would stick their thumbs up if it was a goal for Burnley.

I remember the halftime scores being shown in those "grids" attached
to the perimeter walls of the pitch. They consisted of black metal plates with
white numbers on, which were slid into the grid by a fixed letter,

You had to have a programme in order to discover the game that the score referred to.
Very useful if the 1st XI were away and you were on the turf watching the reserves in the Central League, which incidentally were free to watch by using the special "lettered" tickets at the back of your season ticket book.

Those were the days.

Ceefax at home was easy-peasy, but what if your parents had dragged you out shopping on a Saturday afternoon?

Me and my brother got to know exactly where all the shops selling TVs were, and which ones had a display set that you could access Ceefax on!

The bloke who put the numbers in would walk down to the scoreboard with a number 5 and we'd all get excited as to who had scored five first half goals. He'd then turn it round and it would have a 0 on the other side.

I left school in 1970 and joined the Army. From 1972 to 1983 I spent most of my time in Germany and the only news on the Clarets I got live was from listening to BFBS radio on a Saturday afternoon at 5pm when they broadcast the regular BBC Sports Report. Everyone was in the Cook House desperately awaiting the full time scores - supporters of a wide ranging UK wide teams. There were only match reports for the First Division teams in those days. For any match reports we relied on the national newspapers being delivered - usually a day after the matches - although not all deliveries were on time and as we were languishing in the lower leagues, Burnley reports were few and far between. Thankfully, my Dad posted weekly copies of the Burnley Express with some cuttings of the Lancashire Telegraph, so I could keep up (relatively) with targeted Burnley info and match reports. Thankfully, BFBS TV was introduced later which broadcast Grandstand the match scores were live but obviously not in the scope as today's coverage.

This is a fun thread. I came to Canada in 1972. We would get UK Sunday newspapers on Monday to check footy results, that petered out after a few years. The only way you could get the results was to call Toronto Star and wait on hold until it was your turn to speak to someone who would recite the 'first division' results, absolutely no results from the lower divisions. :o As you can imagine I lost interest after a while and started following NHL and NFL. I finally got the Internet around 2004 or so and got back into football. Good timing on my part, I missed the really bad years and was able to enjoy our club's revival.

Don't remember the dates , late 60s , early 70s when lads walked round the pitch side carrying a tray with shoulder straps selling , cartons of pop with a straw , crisps, Mars bars ect but you had to give the money first before you got the goods 😁
Also walking on the Longside behind the beehole and buying Chips in a paper cone.
And the beer hut at the top between the Longside & Beehole 70s & 80s

They used to do updates so we had Frank Booth for Bolton, who were included then, Norman Shakeshaft for Preston and the most ridiculously biased Jack Holden who would tell us Blackburn were on top even if they were 4-0 down.

Teleprinter on TV was very gut wrenching, as you saw the home team with goals and then Burnley...
Sometimes exhilaration other times a phew for a draw or a total let down.

Eamon Andrews on Der dum, der dum, der dum, der dum, der der der dum der dum with the scores with the voice...

Arsenal 2 BURNLEY 3 Hooray

Looking fir any report was impossible unless playing a London side.

Much later we were robbed by Clubcall and Teamtalk, trying to get any news at all.

Then the Internet opened the world and then the fan sites and here we are.
