Pep for England? Discuss!

Post by IanMcL » Sun Jul 21, 2024 10:12 am

Article suggests that FA want and have made offer to Pep Guardiola to be England's new manager.

What are everyone's thoughts?

Me - not sure he can do for England, what he does, with hands on, for a Club side.

2 weeks at a time is not enough.

His style bores me to death, anyway!

He's got the achievements to and the trophies that a prospective England manager should have.

Yes, it will be tricky to instil his intricate tactics into a side when he only has limited time with them but that shouldn't be seen as insurmountable. Most England players now play similar systems at club level and his Man City cohort certainly won't be starting from scratch.

It's definitely the level England should be aiming for. Not losers like Lee Carsley or Gareth Southgate.

It would worry me that he has no international managerial experience at any level. Carsley looks the best candidate to me and a natural successor to Southgate but if the FA want to take a risk and go a bit more leftfield then Pep would be a good choice.

Would be a great appointment.

I am not bothered about nationality, as long as they know how to win things and can deliver, that's the main priority. It would also weaken Man City, so that is another positive.

Ideally the England manager would be English. But nobody stands out for me. I'd sooner be picky/selective like that once we've actually won something.

They’ve ruled out an English manager with what they want.

I think it would be a fantastic appointment for the English team if it happens. I would be very surprised if he took the job but stranger things have happened.

The only International winners for England in recent years are the Lionesses with a non English Manager.

If the FA have made a well publicised approach to Pep Guardiola, which is under serious consideration by both parties, you wouldn’t be able to walk into your local bookies and be offered 28/1 against such an eventuality. The FA obviously want to be seen by England fans as exploring all avenues before appointing Lee Carsley.

Massive preference for an Englishman but we've been overlooking managerial talent for so long there's only a small pool of good English managers.

Far better we appoint a good foreign manager than an incompetent English one.

The international referees don’t seem to fall for the cheating and diving methods he employs to get results so it’s a no from me.

By all accounts he is off at the end of this season and this looks like a suitable solution for both party’s. Few doubts….

- his wages are astronomical compared to what a national team would pay.
- unsure if his style could be implemented as well as at city with less time with his players.
- starting next summer only gives him 12 months before the World Cup, that’s not a lot of time at all, 3 international breaks maybe??

Don’t know why people impose their own restrictions on nationality - if the rules say you can appoint whoever then why limit your search to a very small pool?

David Moyes, an out of work Scot, could win for England.
Not sure there is a good enough, former international player out there, who could see it home.

Clearly it's down to patriotism. National Identity.

And it's understandable. I just don't think we can be picky when we've won naff all since 1966.

If there was an English manager with the same credentials as Pep then I'd prefer the English guy. But there isn't. Pep would be a real coup.

It's a weird stance. Surely a patriotic Englishman would want to see us lift a trophy over who is sat in the dugout.

The only way I see Pep considering England is if he knows City are set for some serious sanctions soon.
I can't see that happening though, I don't know what's more unlikely Pep managing England or City getting sanctioned.

It's only as good as the financial backers. I'd love to see him carry the brand to say a darlington or another club without a pot to p1ss in & see if he could pull it off with no resources at his disposal.

Anyone who puts a square peg in a square hole will be refreshing.

Anyone who doesn’t try to reinvent the game mid tournament will get me watching.

Anyone who doesn’t leave out a player, then complains about said player not being replaced will be good.

Anyone who grows a pair and drops his captain who just happens to have become the weakest link in the side will get some respect.

Anyone who doesn’t talk like he’s had Garth Crooks writing his pre and post match interviews will get me listening.

Anyone who isn’t Gareth Southgate will get this squad to win something.

Pep, if you think he’s the man, give him the job, or Peps wife if you like.

I honestly and truly believe that absolutely ANYONE could get a tune out of this lot, simply by sending them out to play in the right position (where they excel for their clubs) with the game plan of ‘go and enjoy it lads’.

I don't disagree, if City are on TV i generally switch off. Liverpool at their peak under Klopp were miles better to watch.

This is what I don't get. For me, the best way of playing football is passing your opponent to death and then sticking the ball in the back of the net. It's often a game of chess. The opposition will try and prevent you from passing your way through and scoring.

That'll soon be put to the test because so far historically since 66 nobody can hold a candle to what he's achieved in terms of getting to finals despite no cigar at the finish up.

100% agree, Klopps Liverpool in full flow were a miles better watch partly because you knew it could go wrong and them get beat from time to time.
City just kill the game and you know the outcome it's a draining watch at times.
Our promotion season had a few games where I was bored midway threw the second half because it was that easy

Does he have 12 months left on his City contract? I wonder if the FA would accept that and we get a stand-in for 12 months.

Yep, and what’s happened every time he’s come up against a decent side?

No doubt about it there have been improvements, attitudes and professionalism being two, but to have this lot at your disposal and not win anything is nothing more than abject failure.

I’d love nothing more than to be able to say GS is the greatest England manager ever… I can’t do that and neither can anyone else.

Would he really?

He’s won 3 CL titles in 16 attempts with arguably the favourites or at least England level of favourite in all those years. Isn’t that impressive really.

They have all come up against decent sides & fallen short so nothing unusual there. GS isn't the best manager we've ever had but he's far from being the worse the record (despite not winning anything) speaks for itself. I think some people (not necessarily implying you) are deluded into thinking we are some sort of world beating bonanza. I honestly believe if it wasn't for Southgate we wouldn't have got as far as we did but in time we'll find that out for ourselves when the next chaps takes over & we'll see how far we go with somebody else. You can't deny in comparison with other england managers GS is poor he walks all over them apart from AR.

We’re talking knockout football, not league. Big, big difference. That record to me is poor, given the teams he’s had.

We play qualifying and group games before any knockout football.

This is what I don't get. For me, the best way of playing football is passing your opponent to death and then sticking the ball in the back of the net. It's often a game of chess. The opposition will try and prevent you from passing your way through and scoring.
Yawnathon!

Some may not be aware that the world wanted to watch English football because it was fast and furious as well as totally combative.

Elsewhere, probably owing to heat, the game is slow and ponderous and that is why passing and keeping the ball works. So boring.

Put it in the box, scramble, tackle, block, shoot l, head, score or clear off the line. All at 100 mph. Football UK
