The two things aren't mutually exclusive, Joey Barton is a massive helmet and Eni Aluko is a terrible pundit.

The British government had more tiktok users banned last year than Saudi Arabia and Russia combined, we no longer have free speech.

Everything about this country is heading in the wrong direction.

Not sure exactly what the fine line is but irrespective an organisation that was set up with it’s one objective to kick out racism is going to offer educational courses on discrimination in relation to racism rather than other discriminatory areas would you not think ?
Actually if you look on their home page Kick it Out are ‘here to end all forms of discrimination in sport’

But again it’s splitting hairs!

To be fair you do have a history of making outlandish claims of what ‘you’ think is going on inside the club
No I don't I give my opinion. None of which are particularly outlandish, whether they or right or wrong.
It seems like the comment you've quoted has been deleted. Is there something offensive there?

Really disappointing and fairly childish behaviour all round by someone I'd presumed could have civilised conversation without resorting to petty and sarcastic comments. Il remember that next time he posts saying he needs time away from the board.

Aluko is one to ve wary about, by the sound of it

She is just maximising publicity.

Is it OK to refer to someone as ugly?

It’s why he took that course.

So on the one hand Plod are policing hurty words and pride flags, and on the other, running away from actual rioters and not investigating burglaries. 🫣

More so since he lost his job at Bristol Rovers - he’s just had to settle out of court after posting about Jeremy Vine.

Sad to see - I thought he was a credit to us during his time at Burnley.
Imagine if a Kompany signing behaved the way Joey did against Lincoln, Tony. You wouldn't have the time of day for them.

And there’s a good explanation for that.

Russia and Saudi Arabia have such limited parameters for freedom of speech and expression, and such severe punishments for crossing those lines, that it dissuades most sane people from crossing those lines.

Over here you may get suspended or banned from your favourite social media platform for saying something offensive or spreading misinformation. Might even get a fine. But you’re not going to end up in a gulag for five years for calling the head of state a clown.

If you are genuinely comparing Britain with Saudi and Russia, then I can only assume you're 12 years old.

Back on topic. Barton says outlandish things to try and stay in the limelight. Unfortunately for him, it has caught up with him and bitten him on the arse. He's an idiot who likes to portray himself as an intelligent philosopher.

Aluko is also absolutely bobbins as a pundit, but so are countless others.

Joey Barton has been charged for effectively saying a female pundit is crap.

Is racist or homophobic abuse allowed or are you setting some boundaries in what is allowed within this free speech ?

You have freedom of expression (speech).

You also have a duty to behave responsibly and to respect other people’s rights.

As ever, we do not live in a binary world.

Indeed. I mean, for the record, i find both Vine and Aluko to be prize bellends. But leaving it at that wouldn't have given Joseph the attention he so desperately craves.

Ah, but you're female relatives were never forced down people's throats to talk about a man's game that they could never possibly understand on national telly to satisfy some kind of box ticking.

Just further proof of how thick the bloke is.

Wearing glasses, pretending to read books and telling everyone you are studying for a degree (which you never actually completed) might work in making a few people think you are intellectual for a week or so.

But when you actually have to prove yourself in front of the cameras like he did on Question Time it only takes a few minutes to expose yourself for what you really are.

There’s little point listing all the stupid things he’s done in his life - I have no idea how anyone can try and defend him for being anything other than a thick thug. And yes that includes his time at Burnley. Just because you are a good footballer and he clearly was for us does not change your character. Don’t expect him to be invited to any reunion. There’s few people in football have a good word to say about him - including all of his team mates.

With these 'Twitter Warriors', either left or right, you can always tell when they are out of their depth when they invoke either Nazi Germany or North Korea.

It will soon be like Nazi Germany/North Korea, blah, blah, blah etc.

It's slightly different to that but not much. He used a playground insult to compare her to Fred and/or Rose West and Joseph Stalin.

But your overall point is correct. The law is being used here in a petty and trivial fashion to pursue somebody for some very small beer indeed.

Nazi allsuion stuff is nearly (but not always) OTT.

But prosecuting people for petty insults or criticisms IS the kind of thing that typically does go on in dictatorships, totalitarian regimes and tinpot countries.

The law he's been charged under was (from what I can see online) passed in 1988, presumably to deal with 'poison pen' letters. It pre-dates mass use of the internet and the dawn of social media.

I think this is a clumsy and heavy handed use of the law and it might well be a precedential case in English law. I hope the prosecution case fails or is thrown out because this setting an extremely low bar.

It's no exaggeration to say that far worse insults have been hurled on here without incident.

This is 100% true and spot on. He's already been judged for this - by public opinion.

This is not a matter for the law.

From a legal perspective, yes. I don't think what he's done is (or should) be against the law.

From a matter of politeness, taste and sociability he clearly made a prat of himself - to the extent that it's barely worth commenting on him. His own words are his epitath here and that is how it should have remained.

edited for clarification.

I think we can all agree it would be funny if he was banged up.
I think it would be sinister and worrying.

I didn't say he did I asked where does the freedom of speech end. Are there still things you can't say with freedom of speech or can you say anything you like no matter how offensive and hide behind freedom of speech.

If he thinks she is a crap pundit then say that, it is all it needs. Bit weird you seem to want to defend him on this.
I defend him because he did exactly that and then gave an example of how bad.

It won't get banged up. Well, not for this, anyway.

This is an odd thread, though, even by UTC standards. Everyone else is to blame according to many posters on here, be it the person who was on the receiving end, the police, the CPS, sports TV, law of the land, women, shouty women, Area 51, chemtrails.

I might have made a couple of them up, but you get the gist. Everyone else is to blame, except Saint Joey.

The law was enacted in ‘88 but it was updated in 2001 to include electronic communication (however sent) and has been amended another 6 times. I think by 2024 it’s pretty clear that includes text, email, social media post.

I also imagine that Barton’s audience of nearly 3 million followers bears some consideration.

I don't see much or any "blame" being apportioned here.

There are people who are glad he's been charged and people who think that he should not have been charged. There are maybe a few in between these views.

This isn't some 'conspiracy theory' thing.

The lengths people go to, to defend him is incredible.

Believing he should not be prosecuted =/= "defending him"
