Leganes had one ruled out for being offside.

Not true. Watch clarets uncut from bastien signing in 2022, he shakes hands with Elliot (the set piece coach) in the video. He was there all season 22-23

Not every staff member gets announced but he was 100% there for the full championship season, so the myth that it changed in 23/24 season is wrong. The only difference was we came up against much better players

Positives:

- Koleosho and Odobert both played
- Foster played
- O’Shea and Esteve at the back
- We don’t seem to be conceding many at all in pre-season and so Parker has potentially got us in a less aggressive defensive shape

Negatives:

- Hladky should not be conceding that at his near post
- No Trafford, Tresor or Berge
- We don’t seem to be scoring in pre-season either. One thing we were decent at last season is getting in front. Wonder whether we’re now seeing a better defensive set up but creating less chances

Yes, I know it was a training game and all about fitness, etc, etc.
Maybe it’s a good idea these games are played behind closed doors.

I didn’t know this and I’d hazard a guess many more didn’t either possibly with him only becoming more prominent last season with his introduction to the dugout.

I’m not very comfortable with the mocking this bloke gets from some both on here and in the stands. Seems to be an easy target.

When things aren’t going well people always find someone to blame, there’s an issue with zonal marking in general I think.

Also players like brownhill where hitting the first man on set pieces before ET arrived

The opposition team scored a header from a FK but is was disallowed. Conflicting reports as to whether it was offside or a foul in the build up but it didn’t look a good goal to concede.

What’s unreal about it?

Three of the comments are about who has played (not about the game at all).

Two are about the scorelines across four games.

Interested to know what’s so unreal about fans commenting on who has played and the scorelines after four pre-season friendlies on a fan message board.

Was that the first team? I’d be shocked if we played 2 games in one weekend but does seem as though Sundays game was mainly what we would recognise as the first team, so maybe there was a game for the others on Saturday?

I am unsure but I know a Stanley players mother who said they had played Burnley at Gawthorpe and they were beaten 2-0.

This is absolutely spot on and I’m glad it’s being recognised more on here.

Nobody was complaining about set pieces in 22/23, it was just that we came against much better players last year.

Defensively we got the zonal marking right towards the end of last year, maybe because we signed Esteve (and maybe Assignon) in January and didn’t look troubled. Looked most susceptible vs Everton but then Dyche/Dwight/Tarks unnerved many a better side than us last year and will continue to.

We weren’t so good in an attacking sense but that’s not helped by not having a good dead ball expert. We also helped ourselves by stopping the stupid short ones. O’Shea bagged a few from headers.

Definitely still room for improvement - but daft not to recognise we got better or to blame the set piece coach we had no problems with in the Championship winning season.

Thanks. Good to know.

Do feel we’ve had a pretty decent number of games actually, in different formats from what I’ve heard, so hopefully fitness levels should be good for the start of the season.

You can always jump higher with a running jump, than a standing jump. I've never, ever understood zonal marking. It hands all the initiative to the opposition.

There have been studies which show not much difference between zonal & man marking at set pieces when it comes to defending them.

There were loads of complaints about set piece defending in 22/23, especially around corners because we stopped protecting the keeper and Muric often had at least one opponent jostling him.

Tybebo wasn't the main set piece guy that year, it was Bredice. Unfortunately for Tybebo, when he was promoted he became more prominent because of the one person out of the dugout rule in the PL. Not seen anything innovative from either of them tbh, renderings it largely pointless as a stand alone role.

I'm sure I'm not imagining this, didn't he do the same thing last summer in a friendly? It was the same sort of footage where you needed to zoom closer into Earth.

Eliot Tybebo arrived last summer and took over as set piece coach. He'd previously been at Anderlecht but he very definitely wasn't with us in the Championship.

This is interesting. Burnley FC announced his arrival last summer and the club's official website now reports: "Tybebo joined Burnley's backroom staff in the summer of 2023. Tybebo spent 10 years at RSC Anderlecht prior to joining the Clarets in various different roles after rising through the academy system and moving into a first team coaching role in 2019. After a decade with the Purple & Whites, Tybebo then joined Burnley in the summer of 2023 as Performance Manager & Set-Piece Coach."

Burnley didn’t actually announce his arrival. But the website does say summer 2023 but he was certainly there the whole of 22/23 season even if he was just working in the background

It's unbelievable isn't it?

The club did announce his arrival last summer along with Piet Cremers - I really had no idea he was already here and that the info put out by the club wasn't correct.

I was told that Kompany had shown Cremers the same door as he was showing Bellamy. He seemingly remained for a while but he has now disappeared from the club's staff list though.
