As for squad size it looks like we have chipped away at it with more to follow, what & how many of the present squad can we keep/use taking into the age & home grown rules?
For the home grown matchday squad rule you’d imagine it would be

Keeper - Trafford or whoever we bring in
Roberts
O’Shea
Brownhill
Cullen
Redmond / twine
Jay Rod / obafemi

That’s 7 there with still Egan-Riley, Dodgson and Ramsey (once fit) to be involved

What makes you think Parker was a candidate in n the previous search, around the time we sacked dyche we were bottom of the premier league and Parker had all be secured promotion back to the premier league with Bournemouth. I don’t for one second believe Parker was an option when we appointed Kompany
I was sure I read it somewhere, potentially on here, that Parker was known to Pace having applied for the role previously. I think Parker might’ve hinted at having spoken to the club previously in one of his initial interviews too.

May not be true though.

A guy on turfcast show said his theory was he thinks Parker applied for the role last time based on the fact Parker spoke to kompany and Bellamy before they started in 2022, that’s probably were you have got it from but it makes no sense for Parker to apply for the job last time when he was promoted with Bournemouth and we were going down

Fair enough, that might be it and they were the comments I’d picked up on.

Can’t really understand why he spoke to Kompany/Bellamy in those circumstances unless he was considering some kind of role at the club or they were consulting him about something though.

"Combative" to me, needs to be fairly tall (for aerial duels), strong in the tackle, not afraid to shoot and showing pace

I wouldn't describe any of the above in quite the same manner - and that was one of our main problem areas last season
Roy Keane was combative. A good example.

Parker said in the interview that VK and Bellamy had spoke to him to find out what the Championship is like.
Considering that Parker had just completed his 2nd promotion from the league, i would say it is pretty understandable.

Fair point and yes if it was them reaching out to him it makes much more sense - good decision on their behalf.

Parker said they kompany and Bellamy asked him for advice on things, Bellamy already knowing Parker from playing days it’s makes perfect sense to ask Parker who has 2 promotions for advise, don’t you think?

I am thinking it could have been instagated by Bellamy when you consider they had a bit of a relationship from their playing days.

Conway/Twine?

https://www.birminghamworld.uk/sport/fo ... rd-4722110

Might be room for a bit of a swapsy.
However it sounds like Twine might be finding his feet at Burnley in pre season.

We have Cullen, Brownhill and Massengo who all qualify as combative midfielders. We don't need another and particularly not a diminutive one. We're well stocked in midfield unless and until Berge goes.
I was merely replying to another poster about signing a midfielder whilst using a link to a former Parker player. I’m not suggesting we need one

We could struggle if a few of those get injured. McNally should be on the home grown list.
We have lost 4 home grown players in Muric Cork Taylor Peacock-Farrell and not brought any in as fas as I can tell. Roberts O'Shea Brownhill, Twine Trafford McNally and Obafemi have been "linked' on various sites as being possible departures

He didn't - I think that comment about speaking to Bellamy & Kompany has been taken out of context.

Not exactly a prolific scorer. 8 first team and 15 second team appearances. 1 goal scored for the reserves.

That might have to do with him being just 20 years old and is also a right winger ;)

Wouldn’t be shocked if any incomings have the age profile of this lad from Nantes to allow them to play outside of our 25 man squad size (pending any outgoings).

Wasn’t sure if McNally classed as being home grown with him being for ROI.

Yeah with this injuries we would struggle but hopefully with players doing out the door such as

Delcroix
McNally
Bastien
Twine
Churlinov
Tresor
Weghorst

That would allow us to bring couple of home grown players in.

We still have Egan Riley, Odobert, koleosho, Ramsey and ageyi who don’t need to be registered in the overall 25 I think

It could be but I think they've played mainly on the left in their careers, along with Zaroury although Odobert was central at times last season...

We seemed to be stacked on the left side more than the right so it's more likely because we don't have JBL anymore who seemed to work okay on both sides and who played on the right quite often last season...

Gudmundsson can play on the right but is more central these days and we have Benson of course... At a stretch, we have a few others that could maybe play on the right but even if we do not lose any wingers, I can see room for a young right winger.

Indeed and that's a miss because he'd have been ideal. That is the sort we need though and there aren't too many about.
Tend to agree we are missing a big physical centre forward who can occupy defenders and bring other attacking players into the game.

I’d be testing Luton’s resolve and asking them about their two forwards - Morris and Adebayo.

Foster has the physical attributes to bully and lead the line for us, as evidenced by his performance at Villa Park. The question is whether he can get back to that level of performance at a lower level as his season totally petered out. He should be notching 15+ for us so has a degree of pressure on him to be 'the man'. If he can get to that sort of figure, and we can reasonably expect the likes of Houtondji, Rodriguez, Benson, Zaroury, Brownhill, Amdouni (if here), Odobert (if here) and possibly Koleosho to get 7-10 each then we should be there or thereabouts in terms of the goals we need.

Foster was fairly anonymous for us in the Championship. In the PL he had about 6 fantastic games when we started to believe we had a real talent, but he showed he lacked consistency. I felt at times VK was playing him until he hit form, and eventually left him out. On his day he is a handful.

People have mentioned a strong aggressive front man. I appreciate he is 33 but for me Danny Welbeck at Brighton has had 3 tremendous seasons at Brighton. Despite worries about his fitness he played 37 games in each of the last two seasons. A two year contract might tempt him away, and Brighton have a wealth of strikers. Just a thought

Why would a 2 yr deal at Burnley tempt him away from his 2 year deal at Brighton ignoring his wage which is probably £50-£60k a week ?

Probably best to wait and see how many we sell first and for how much….unless you’re actually Alan Pace.

We might need to shift things around and make some sales we don’t particularly want to which could enable players coming in.

Foster only really put in one truly great centre forward display - at Villa Park. That’s pretty much it. In a year and a half.

And who can confidently say that Foster will stay fit this season? Nobody can.

Foster was our best player up until his mental health issues. Incidentally away at Luton last season he scored a great goal and played really well. At Forest he was great and scored another goal which was incorrectly ruled out for handball. If we can get this version of Foster back fit and firing then he’s likely the best striker in the division.

Foster was our best player up until his mental health issues. Incidentally away at Luton last season he scored a great goal and played really well. At Forest he was great and scored another goal which was incorrectly ruled out for handball. If we can get this version of Foster back fit and firing then he’s likely the best striker in the division.
He certainly has all the attributes.

The key word you use there is ‘if’. Anyone who has even the slightest inkling about mental health knows how unpredictable it is.

I really hope he has a good year - for his own good. But I think it would be foolish of the management to rely on getting anywhere near 40+ games out of him next season.

Why would a 2 yr deal at Burnley tempt him away from his 2 year deal at Brighton ignoring his wage which is probably £50-£60k a week ?
Had not realised he had signed a new deal recently. I assumed he was nearing his old contract-but yes agree if that's the case. But he is the type we might benefit from.

Lyle Foster has scored a grand total of 24 goals in 136 career appearances. That’s closer to 1 in 6 than 1 in 5. I saw absolutely nothing of him in the Championship to suggest he would improve on that, yet for a very brief period at the start of last season he looked like proving me wrong. Now I’m not sure. Anyone suggesting he will turn into a goalscoring machine next season are surely basing this on sheer hope rather than anything tangible.

Going what Foster went through kinda takes its toll on a person, but don’t worry, Rileybobs on UTC will happily tell people he’s not sure.

I would say this would be the season to really judge and question foster. When he signed in Jan we were practically promoted and playing against teams who just sat off us with a low block and he had to factor in settling in. Last season is the premier league and the jump in quality of opposition is massive but he showed some good signs when he played. There was obviously his issues off field

Foster should’ve been playing in his natural position last season instead of being out wide with VK persisting on playing Fofana. Will be interesting to see how he plays this season.

He was one of the top scorers in Belgium the season we signed him. Before that he hadn’t really been given a proper run as a main striker and was playing wide. Also how many of the 136 appearances were as a sub during his younger years?

Fact is he had something like 8 goal contributions in the first 9/10 games in the Prem last season and was probably our best player until the red card at Forest & subsequent issues. Then second half of the season, Villa away aside, it didn’t happen for him but he’d also had to recover from a hernia op & then played off the right wing. Let’s hope we can get him back to the levels we have seen him at.

Of course it does. Who knows how much Foster’s well publicised health issues have impacted his game for the worse. Or should I pretend that I think Foster is going to tear up the Championship?

Foster only really put in one truly great centre forward display - at Villa Park. That’s pretty much it. In a year and a half.

And who can confidently say that Foster will stay fit this season? Nobody can.

That can be said of any player, though.

I don’t know where he played or how many were as a sub, I’m not really bothered enough to know. I’m just going off facts that he has scored a sum total of 24 goals in his career to date, so there is little other than pure hope to suggest he will turn into a goal machine.

I agree with the gist of your post though, particularly that he was our best player for the opening 6-7 games or so - and obviously we all want to see him hit the levels that he did in a few of those games.

Going into the PL campaign with Foster and Rodriguez as our only real centre forward options was a catastrophe, and hopefully Hountondji will prove a good option this season.

I am completely convinced that had he not had his well publicised mental health issues last season, he would’ve easily scored 10-15 goals last season.

He was arguably our best player in the run up to his absence.

I think a fully fit Foster absolutely tears this league to shreds.

The question is, can we get him fully fit, both mentally and physically?
