ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
After fifteen years in the league, it's back to non-league for Charlie

Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
Fantastic player for us, shame we couldn’t have kept him but financially at the time we had to sell. He’ll always be one of my favourite centre forwards that played in a Burnley shirt.
Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
Brilliant striker for us and was gutted when he went to QPR which I think was roughly around this date. He’d looked excellent in pre season with Ings and it seemed to really deflate my expectations for the coming season (I needn’t have worried with the emergence of Vokes).

Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
I've just checked and it was on this very date. And what did Dyche saY? "It's an opportunity for someone else," and how Ings & Vokes took that opportunity. But Charlie is right up there as one of the very few natural finishers I've seen at Burnley.burnmark wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 12:19 pmBrilliant striker for us and was gutted when he went to QPR which I think was roughly around this date. Good luck to him.
Superb goal machine for us.
Shame we needed the money soo much.
SD was right.
The way Sam came into his own was as brilliant as it was surprising.

I'd say an absolute no to that - at different levels, the best three natural goalscorers I've seen for us have been Willie Irvine, Andy Payton and Charlie.

We kicked off that season with just two strikersBuxtonclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 1:22 pm

Ings had scored 6 in 47 league appearances
Vokes had scored 6 in 55 league appearancecs
Who on earth could have thought they would do what they did?
Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
Ings was a weird one. He kept showing glimmers of incredible talent but seemed to show no ruthlessness at all in front of goal. I suppose he was similar to Amdouni last season really. Let's hope Parker can do with Amdouni what Dyche did with Ings.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 2:40 pmWe kicked off that season with just two strikers

Also in terms of finishers I always like to add Chris Eagles into the mix, obviously a different player entirely but when he went one on one with the keeper, he never seemed to miss. Very underrated end product wise for me.

A brilliant finisher and excellent with his head.
I know he scored a top goal at Charlton from distance but my favourite goal (and I can't remember who it was against) was a header at the Jimmy Mc end from around the edge of the box.

Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
Blimey, I'll be able to watch him if he lasts the season OK.
Just been putting in my diary the fixtures of my local club Basingstoke Town. We've got to wait until the penultimate game of the season 19th April to host Totton but playing them away early Sept. I like to watch Basingstoke home matches (1.5 mile walk, £8 entry) but not really keen enough to follow them away.
I'd expect him to bang in plenty at this level, Totton just missed out on promotion last season, coming 2nd to promoted Chesham U so he's in a decent team at this level (and one ambitious enough to sign Ch A).

Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
He was a great header of the ball, up there (literally) with Andy Lochead and Gareth Taylor.
That night match against Sheffield Wednesday when he bagged an hat trick and we still only got a 3-3 draw.
I bet he had some choice words with our defence in the dressing room afterwards.

Austin and Payton are the two best finishers I've seen in my 27 years of watching Burnley.
I was gutted when he left, I honestly thought we were going to get relegated that season. Promotion came completely out of the blue and it was all down to Sean Dyche building a tight knit group of players who all new their roles.
Pretty sure it was 8 out of the last 10 previous seasons, we would have gone up as champions

Again different level but Ron Futcher was a great finisher something like 30 in 70 games but CA was just so much better.

The best out and out striker I've seen play for us, he had the finishing of Payton and the aerial prowess of Taylor. Nobody attacked the ball quite like Austin.

Unbelievable goal. The ball came from behind him and he still managed to get the power and accuracy to beat the keeper from the edge of the box.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 2:48 pmA brilliant finisher and excellent with his head.

He must be on the verges of packing it in, if he has gone to Totton. My village team got the better of them last season.

Austin and Payton best natural finishers I've seen
Eagles mentioned in another post re one on ones. You could throw John Deary into that mix as well.

Probably our best striker in terms of being a 'natural finisher' since Willie Irvine.

Danny Ings and Andre Gray had good promotion seasons. Andy Cooke was knocking them in when I first started watching Burnley but Payton and Austin were natural born finishers. Payton is an absolute hero, saved us in the Waddle season and then banged the goals in to get us promoted under StanClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 5:10 pm27 years? But in the Waddle season we played Grimsby, Northampton, Bristol City and Fulham on consecutive Saturdays. Those four finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd & 6th. He scored the winning goal in all four.

Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
Having lived just outside Southampton during 18 years, the period when we had players like Sam and Danny who come from the area was both strange but pleasant. It was weird when Jay signed for Southampton. Totton is on the other side of Southampton to the one I lived in but it still seems like home.
They have a fairly good history with a few famous names (this from Wiki) such as Ted McDougall and Ian Turner who played for Southampton when they won the FA Cup in 1976.
The last time I saw a Burnley match was at Derby in 2011 (yes, I'm a plastic) and Charlie got a brace to help us win 2-1.
His presence at Totton will hopefully attract some additional spectators.

One of my favourite ever Clarets over the last 40 years.
I will tell my grandchildren about the time I saw him take a headed shot just inside the oppositions half.
I probably don’t remember this perfectly but didn’t he score a hat trick and we lost 3-4. Seem to remember him going nuts about it- a good summary of the Howe era.

He scored a hat trick in a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday when in truth we were very fortunate to get a point. He scored twice in a 2-1 win at Derby in the previous away game when we were dreadful.Burnleyareback2 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 8:22 pmOne of my favourite ever Clarets over the last 40 years.

Re: ARTICLE: Austin moves to Totton
Which village team was that? Totton finished 2nd in the league last year and lost only 7 games (of 42). Got 89 goals, 45 against; the winners (Chesham United) had 83 goals, 46 against so Totton did pretty well overall and, with CA, must be one of the favourites to go up this time round.
Not many village teams in that league.

Totton we're a well organised team, but never really looked like they'd go up. There didn't seem to be anything that noteworthy about them, but then there was no obvious weakness. This signing may make a big difference (unfortunately).LeadBelly wrote: ↑Thu Aug 01, 2024 9:46 pmWhich village team was that? So Austin will be playing at level 8 in the pyramid. The same level as Bradford [Park Avenue], since Avenue's relegation last season. He will rip defences apart. I don't suppose any centre half fancies marking him. I'd hate to see him against Avenue.

Totton and Eling is not the same club as AFC Totton- the club that CA has signed for (though their grounds are fairly close)
Your "village team" has not beaten AFC Totton on any recent year.
You've given misinformation, seemingly to imply C A's career is finished; "He must be on the verges of packing it in, if he has gone to Totton. My village team got the better of them last season"
