He's a centre half who can also play at full back.

I see, all 11 apps for Chelsea last season came at right back so I presumed that was his position, seemed quite small for a cb.

Middlesbrough in for young Manchester City forward Micah Hamilton.

Does this mean they have given up on Conway? Is Tommy Conway Turf Moor bound?
Hull submit £5m bid for Bristol City forward Conway
Latest from Sky Sports' Ron Walker:

Hull have submitted a £5m bid for Bristol City forward Tommy Conway.

The 21-year-old has already been the subject of a bid from Middlesbrough, with Burnley also showing interest.

Multiple other Championship clubs are also interested in the Scotland international, but it is believed Boro are best-placed to complete a deal.

I always rated Chris Wood and was gutted when he left. Eddie shafted us twice with Wood and Pope deals
Wood had a £25m release clause in his contract, there was little we could do about that,Pope on the other hand was an absolute disgrace ,

I can’t quite understand the language there, are they suggesting we are actively trying to shift Berge or saying that we will sell for the right amount.

I hope we aren’t actively pursuing a sale

The club will need to bring in money this summer. If nobody is coming in for the ones we're happy to shift, there will come a time where we actively have to push some of the more saleable assets.

As with any club outside the superpowers (to coin a Dyche phrase), every player is for sale.

Berge is simply not good enough for a side that has aspirations of getting back into the top 4, if that is indeed what they are aiming for.

Just another nonsense article.

Only thing I can think regarding Conway is that we're trying to improve our HG quota. We're overwhelmingly overstocked in our attacking options.

When he signed for us, he was under valued.
The only reason we got him for £12-£13m was due to him turning down a new contract and only having 1 year left. It was a case of Sheffield United getting as much as possible for him or else he would have left for nothing the following season.
So if he was undervalued, why were we the only team in for him?

The fact is that Berge has been around for a number of years now. He's frequently been linked with big moves elsewhere but none have materialised.

I firmly believe that's because he has found his level. That's not to say he's a poor player, because he isn't. It wasn't hard to stand out in our team last year, but as my first manager told me (who, tbf wasn't known for her motivational skills), there's no pride in being the top of a pile of sh*t.

Whilst I think there's an argument Conway is a similar profile to what we have, I don't agree that we are overstocked up front. We've got Foster, an aging Rodriguez, an unproven Hountondji, and Obafemi who looks to me likely to be on the way out and certainly you could see Conway in effect replacing Obafemi.

That's 4 strikers capable of leading the line which doesn't seem massively indulgent to me (although I would like one to be capableof fixing defenders like Barnes, and im not sure Conway is that). We then have a plethora of players capable of playing off the striker- most obviously Amdouni, who I have hopes for this season- but he's going to be playing in one of the withdrawn roles. There's a role for another striker in the squad if Obafemi isn't part of our plans.

The Athletic don’t tend to talk shite. Too much noise around Berge for something not to be in it in my opinion, hope I’m wrong. Unless the player is agitating for a move (really doesn’t seem the type) I’d be asking for one year. If we don’t go up we’d still clear our money back as a minimum next summer. Assuming Trafford goes for £20m-ish, we’d still have brought £40m from him, Muric and Kompany before considering loan fees/small fees likely incoming for McNally, Twine, Churlinov, Obafemi, Weghorst and the lowering of wage bill from likes of Cork and Taylor leaving.

Feels incredibly short sighted to sell him unless there are things we don’t know about going on. One way ticket to £200m TV money with him alongside Cullen and Brownhill in a midfield three.

There seems to be this assumption Trafford is definitely leaving but Newcastle are now possibly splashing £60m on Guehi & have already signed a few keepers. Not sure he’s been mentioned anywhere else except Chelsea who also signed a new keeper. So if he doesn’t end up going it’s also possible we need to ‘plug’ that £20m hole we thought we might get for him. The fact he hasn’t been starting in pre-season does suggest there is an expectation that he leaves, mind.

I think something must be understood at the club with Trafford RV, simply due to the lad coming in from St Etienne and the fact he is clearly in full training but not being considered for selection, as you say. Who that is, no idea, but seems guaranteed the club have full expectation he is on his way out. If that’s not the case then yes, fair enough.

Seems strange that Man U seem willing to offload Scott McTominay and replace him with Sander Berge.

Could it be if Ederson leaves City, the rumours about him rejoining them may come to fruition?

I read something the other day that if Ederson leaves they are happy for Ortega to be number one in which case they could be looking for a young understudy in Trafford to gradually build into the team.

Common sense says he was on the basis of contract length.
If he had 2-3 years left on his contract would Sheff United have accepted £12m. I don't think so.

I agree it helped our negotiating position, but my point is if he was available for that price last summer, why weren’t bigger clubs in for him? He wasn’t an unknown quantity, he’d even played in the Prem before with Sheff U.

Perhaps those teams didn't need a player in that position last year, it looks like at least one of them need one this season

Not the first time Sander Berge has been linked with a top four club. Linked with Liverpool a couple of years ago when he first started to impress for Sheff Utd.

Still not sure why he keeps ending up playing in the championship. He must wonder that too to some degree.

I'd be delighted if he was still here at the end of August, however.

The Athletic has been consistent with this message for over a month. We need to sell to reduce the numbers and bring in some revenue.

They have said all along we want to sell Sander and Trafford.

Think Berge will be a massive loss but if he wants to go and other clubs are flashing the cash what can we do. If he goes I think we need another central midfielder. We need to quickly get rid of some others too such as Tresor and Weghorst. We can’t just keep selling off the best players and hoping we’ll be as strong.

All depends how they lose too (like us). Squad is very thin so if Souza, Ahmedozic and Hamer go then it would suddenly look a lot weaker. They are also said to be in for Cooper at Plymouth once Osula sale happens, which would be another good signing. So yes, so far, it’s been a solid rebuild from them.

Wonder how true the Man Utd and Berge thing is, or if it’s then trying to push along a deal for another target like Ugarte.

If he does go then we definitely need a replacement, someone with decent passing ability to compliment Cullen as both Brownhill and Massengo are more “engine” types than ball players.

As for Sheff Utd, they have made some good signings and look like adding to that. The same applies to us and Sheff Utd, who will we lose before the window ends, and can we bring in adequate replacements in the key positions ? I.e. replace Berge.

I suspect Berge is a player whose career has been harmed by spending the last 4 years of his career either injured, playing in a relatively direct championship team, or battling relegation in a team unable to control the game. He's a box to box midfielder and a very good one who is good at retaining possession and driving with the ball, and is also very good tactically defensively, but who lacks the aggressive streak that sets apart someone like Declan Rice (who is similar in style but has been more successful precisely because he is more aggressive).

That is a weakness which will stand out in a struggling team, like ours was last season, and it also probably stood out in the way he was deployed by Sheffield United in the Championship (given their direct style) which may explain why he we were able to get him relatively cheaply last summer (even allowing for his contract situation which it is right to say might have been expected to attact other suitors). The hope now is that whilst we weren't good enough at it to survive last season, the way we tried to play showcased his qualities as well as his deficiencies and so showed bigger clubs where he might fit into a more dominant team..

If he goes we'll need a midfielder who can distribute from deep and add aerial presence to what is otherwise quite a small midfield unit (I struggle to see Massengo and Cullen paired together for this reason). Ben Sheaf has been mooted before but may be out of our price range.

I think Berge will go.

I'm starting to feel a bit twitchy now to be honest. We've got a massive squad and we know we need Outgoings- we seem to be struggling to move on a lot of the fringe players so I think the bigger players will have to be sold because we obviously need the money.

I'd still like us to make a couple of top quality signings like the Barton and Andre Gray double that helped fire us to the title too.

It was always inevitable that we would sell some big name players this summer (we couldn't fit them all into the team simultaneously in the PL so we aren't going to keep happy in the Championship) and frankly it's a sign of strength that we've not been forced to accept early offers. Unless you are forced to sell, it's always August when stuff happens and I think the underlying squad is strong enough that it's not a massive issue that we'll be doing any trading out, and as a result any further trading in, over the first weeks of the season.

Sheff Utd now signing Rushworth on loan from Brighton instead of Cooper from Plymouth. If Trafford is leaving then Cooper should be signed and be made number 1. Nixon reporting Cooper has been left unsettled by it so time for us to step in. But of course depends on Trafford leaving.

Seems strange that Man U seem willing to offload Scott McTominay and replace him with Sander Berge.
McTominay is an academy player, so pure profit on the books

They’ll get more for him than they’ll pay for Berge

They may also feel that McTominay isn’t going to develop further, plus they’ve got Mainoo now

Football Finance 101 that has been so clearly in evidence over the last couple of years and particularly this summer

Seen it mentioned on Twitter, but are you saying you have the photo of him actually there?

If true about Berge and MU we have a massive height problem for next Monday. Really need Beyer or Al-Dakhil to be fit and to play at right back.
