We seem to be missing out on so many opportunities to win gold at these olympics

I was thinking the same. Laura Kenny predicted something like 9 Gold medals in the cycling velodrome. Looks like we'll be nowhere near it.

I love watching the team pursuit, it's a great race. Not sure what happened at the end would have affected the outcome but it was so close all the way through.

I think he means we're missing out on Gold too many times with regards to the table. Silver is like the goal difference, with Gold the number of points as that's how countries are ranked foremost.

For me, no, as long as you're still picking up lots of medals.

I think it shows the huge investment is continuing to pay off, had we been missing out completely then that would be a concern.

Winning a gold medal is bloody hard. Hudson-Smith's allegedly disappointing silver in the 400m final was a new European record! Sometimes one of the other athletes just finds something special. It's disappointing if an athlete doesn't perform to their potential, but clearly not the case here.

Just had a look at the medal table and noticed a couple of things

Are Germany normally this bad?

Considering the population of Brazil, they are terrible at the Olympics

Both countries have more than made up for it with their footballing achievements over the years. Top 10 isn't a bad showing for Germany. A lot better than, say, India, who have three bronze medals to their name.

I was going to look back to 1984 for comparison, but it was subject to a boycott from East Germany and Russia ...
The last Olympics before the breakup of Eastern Europe was 1988 in Seoul ...

USSR 55 Gold 31 Silver 46 Bronze
East Germany 37 35 30
West Germany 11 14 15
China 5 11 12
GB & NI 5 10 9

Seems all the fun went out of it for East Germany when drug testing was taken seriously ...

A couple of other points, China has progressed massively ... also GB & NI have massively improved, largely due to National Lottery funding, which has allowed a much more professional approach ..

I'm really looking forward to the basketball semi final at 8 O'clock, my mum's country Serbia against the USA, they are huge favourites and are stacked with talent but we are good at the game and basketball is huge in Serbia, Red Star regularly get 20,000 plus for euroleague games. Plus we have Nikola Jokić, NBA MVP 3 out of 4 years. As a Claret though I am fully prepared for crushing disappointment 😉

What a spirit crushing and soul destroying way to lose, huge double digit leads all through the game including 13 ahead going into the final quarter. I'm a grown man and I'm close to tears my young nephew is unconsolable.

Serbia really could have caused a major upset there agsinst USA but they just seemed to run out of steam in the last five. USA used their big game experience plus some magic from James and Curry to win it . Great game, that's what the olympics is all about.

Just starting, Serbia v USA in the water polo semi final, a chance for a bit of revenge after last night's absolutely gutting defeat in the basketball semi. Serbia going for a 3rd consecutive gold in this event but it's going to be tough. Idemooooo Serbia

Yes get in, Serbia 10 USA 6. A dominant performance from start to finish and now in the final. Water polo is hugely popular in Serbia so this is big. Very proud of them.

Very talented competitors, but a bit of a nonsense with regards to it being an Olympic event, especially with those daft MCs.

I'm watching the womens climbing. I didn't think I would enjoy it but I watched the men's and was hooked. We managed the gold in the men's but I think the female is going to come up short after starting well. They make it look a lot easier than it is hauling their bodies up upside down.

Another bronze in the diving. Noah Williams putting some superb dives in with two in the 90s. Just a shame he got a lowish score on one or it could have been another silver for him.
