Kai Rooney
14 year old son of Wayne, currently at Man Utd. He’s being tipped to be very special. Playing for the U16s at 14 years old.
Early doors yet but he looks very good from some videos i have watched.
He scored 56 goals for the u13s last season, at any level of football that’s a great achievement.
Wayne is the greatest English player ever so I wouldn’t put it past Kai to be as good but wow if he’s better England will get some player !

Re: Kai Rooney
In his prime he would walk into any team in the world, club or country.
Won everything there is playing for the biggest club in the world, was Englands top scorer and is Man Utd’s too.
Euro 2004 Wayne Rooney was scary just how good he was at a young age.
Who’s better ??

My team played against his team a few years ago at a tournament in Accy - probably u9 or u10
Could see he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch that day even before we knew who he was, then his mum turned up to watch them we realised who he was

I’m not disputing that he was an outstanding player but I know Jimmy Mac would cringe at the thought of him being the best. He’d have told you that it was Tom Finney.ClaretsPadiham wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2024 4:25 pmIn his prime he would walk into any team in the world, club or country.

Re: Kai Rooney
Your premis excludes many great players from being held in such high esteem. All goalkeepers for a start, defenders too, midfielders and even wingers are straightaway eliminated. It's an age old argument that cannot possibly be proven in favour of anyone. Everyone has their opinion, of course, but such a sweeping statement only tends to harbour disagreement rather than confirm for definite. There have no doubt been some exceptionally talented footballers down the years; the same game but uniquely different conditions each time any game was played.ClaretsPadiham wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2024 4:25 pmIn his prime he would walk into any team in the world, club or country.

Brilliant player yes, best in the world ? not sure he'd have got into the Spanish,Portuguese,Argentinian team etc.
I'd say at his prime he'd be in the top 20 English players, jut you cannot really compare him to the greats of the past due to different pitches, footwear, balls, fitness etc.

Sir Bobby Charlton
George Best (not English I grant you, but makes Rooney look like the Scouse thug he is)
Rooney was a special young talent and no mistake… but he isn’t Utds best ever English player let alone the best in the country…

His goal output in tournaments doesn't point to being our best ever.
Good player bit he wouldn't start a tournament for me ahead of Lineker, Shearer, Owen or Kane.
Nevermind the earlier team players.

Re: Kai Rooney
There’s absolutely no comparison between the players of old and today’s players.
I am saying Rooney is Englands best ever player, it’s not even close.
Kyle Walker is a better footballer than George Best ever was.
You can reminisce all you want, but a lad who rocked up half cut, after a few pints the night before, played against amateurs on bogs isn’t anywhere near the modern player.
They produce against full time professionals who’ve been breed to be the best of the best since they were twelve.
The game has changed, all sport has changed for the better.

I don't think I've ever read anything as bizarre as that statement. I have to say that I disagree, having seen both of them play. I know it is an opinion, but I feel that not many football fans would agree with that opinion. In my opinion I believe that Kyle Walker would agree with me and I don't believe that Kyle is an overly modest man.

Re: Kai Rooney
How many great games did Gazza have for England? Genuine q btw as slightly before my time. Was it that many?
You can think Gazza was better but ‘not fit to lace his boots’ about Rooney seems a little ridiculous.

Best and others were the top 1% at the time of their careers. But, they don’t compare and wouldn’t compete in today’s game. It’s changed too much.

Football is always about opinions and having watched live games since 1960 George Best was top by a mile.Willie Irvine in a short but glittering career the best after Jimmy Mac I have seen at Burnley.

Best English players
Hurst, Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, Finney,Matthews, Beardsley, Bobby Moore,Michael Owen, Gazza,Lineker,Gerard, Lampard, John Barnes, Kane, Rooney, Scholes, you could make an argument for any of them and these are just a few I can recall.

Re: Kai Rooney
Rooney in his prime was one hell of a player. In terms of pure football talent, as good as anything I've ever seen.
Not a natural athlete, though. Sir Alex talked about how he would lose his fitness rapidly and take a long time to return to full fitness. His base physique didn't help him and as is quite clear from his appearance today, he was never disciplined and committed in the way his elite contemporaries have been.
Rooney's career arc dipped at least 5 years too soon, when compared to Ronaldo, Messi, Giggs, Ibrahimovic etc

Crackin player but there's definitely been better, Hoddle and Gazza, always thought Colin Bell was underrated as was Beardsley

Re: Kai Rooney
you are ignoring all context - it's relative to who they were up against. If Best were playing now he would be like the modern day player and he would be head and shoulders above Walker. That's one of your most bonkers statements on hereCooclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2024 10:10 pmThere’s absolutely no comparison between the players of old and today’s players.

Have this argument with my father all the time, he’s also prone to over romanticising the past.
