Szmodics to Ipswich still very much on.
Looks like both clubs are playing the old game of "who blinks first".

They'll probably agree to blink at the same time with a
compromise on both sides.

Deadline day is the 30th August I believe, and we play Blackburn the day after.

Let's hope Ipswich don't blink until late on the 30th for maximum impact.

Ipswich should have given them the reported extra £500k, as Rovers will be putting the price up with the way he has started the season.

Let's equally hope we don't get ridiculous offers for Odebert, O'Shea and Berge the day before we play them.

We need to be on it, and ready. Squad and tactics need to be well versed.

No hope of Dara O'Shea to Celtic!
Fee too high for Celtic despite reports. Might change if O'Reilly is sold.
Brentford still struggling on the fee!

Like we used to under Dyche. It was quite a successful market for us.

From reading the Brentford forums, the feeling was that O'Shea was being brought in as a back up so I expect they were hoping to get him for around 10 million. Certainly a lot less than we would value him.

This is true. I think the gap has widened a lot between the leagues now though so interesting to see how it goes for them. I’m not hopeful but I might be wrong.

They seem to be going for the “whole new team” strategy too.

Phillips, despite his huge drop in form, will prove to be the best signing I think. If we’d got him last season I think it’d have made a big difference (or Cole Palmer of course).

If that’s the case, and he knows it, I’ll be surprised if he’s that keen to go there and sit on the bench - whatever fee they offer us.

Jason O'Connor, who has inside info on a lot of Irish footballers, says Celtic are out of the O'Shea chase and Brentford "struggling" with the fee.

Exactly the vibe that I was getting when reading the BBC Gossip page and learning that Burnley would come out of the deal with Brentford showing a profit on the £7m that they paid WBA for him. Definitely didn’t get the impression Brentford were going to pay anything near £20m.

Glad we aren’t letting players leave for cheap. Good on the board and I hope we keep him and Berge and sell or loan out the fringe players

There's probably something lying around in the back of the shop they can have for £10m, but it aint O'Shea.

Ekdal or the lad who came on for the last few minutes on monday night maybe.

This is Burnley Football Club, not Auntie f*ckin Wainwright's.

I agree we shouldn't let any of our players leave 'on the cheap'
but then again we may be over estimating what anyone player is worth.
Ultimately they're worth what someone is willing to pay.
I'm guessing we still need to bring in some money from sales and it would be
interesting to know how much we actually need?

I'm guessing again that we'd be happy if we could bring in another 25-30m
and possibly loan out another 3/4 to get them off the wage bill.

Would probably still leave us a little top heavy in terms of numbers
but approaching 50m in terms of money coming in.

Surely that would be enough? For now.

Fee of £9million rising to £11 million agreed between Ipswich and Blackburn for Smzodics, personal terms not expected to be a problem.

Ipswich also exploring a deal for a season long loan for Armando Broja from Chelsea, would be funny for them to take Smzodics and sit him on the bench all season.

At his age it’s probably his last crack at playing in prem. Can’t blame him moving on and I’m sure even Blackburn fans can’t begrudge him.

I was concerned that Leeds might bring him in to replace Rutter so this is absolutely perfect for us. Out of the Derby, not fighting us for promotion. Great news.

Decent money for a player of his age and long term record.

It will allow them some flexibility in the transfer market but the majority of the cash will go towards servicing their heavy annual running costs.

They will eventually run out of sellable assets, but think Finneran is also due to go to Newcastle.

Ipswich may have made lots of changes but as we found out the gulf between the top league and the Championship is vast and getting bigger. It may be an unfashionable stance but I believe Ipswich won't survive with the big boys .

All opinions I know but i think 10m for Szmodics is horrendous business for Ipswich. Incredible business on Rovers part.

He's 5'6 - tiny. Not particularly fast, tricky or strong and he's going to turn 29 in a month having only managed circa 50 league goals in his career at league 1 and lower level up until he's found a purple patch with Rovers. It doesn't strike me as the profile of a striker that's cut out to score goals at that level.

It could be that they've bought him with one eye on coming back down which is fair enough but I don't think the likes of him or Delap are going to offer them much at PL level.

Perhaps not but every signing you can think of represents some sort of a risk & when all said & done it isn't that much money for the league they are now in & need to sign somebody to at least have a go. The overall package probably falls within their constraints can they get better pound for pound I doubt not.

10m for a premier club is nothing. Gives them a top striker for the championship if they are relegated.

Looks a good deal all round tbh.

I have to be honest after thinking Szmodics wasn’t very good two years ago he has certainly improved. Reminds me a lot of Ings. His age is quite high and means they aren’t likely to make any profit on him. However if they aren’t bothered about that then 10m is a fairly reasonable fee for a striker bang in form and his fitness and way of playing may well give him a good 4 or 5 years. I also think he’s better than Diaz, and he actually did ok last year for Sheff Utd. So I’m sure Szmodics can score goals in the prem, both on the counter (what rovers did a lot of last year) and if Ipswich get chances within the penalty area.

But yet when we bought players who probably weren't good enough for the premier league, but good at this level, it was seen as a ridiculous strategy.

The worry for Ipswich being they have gambled, but if they go down I am in no doubt McKenna would move to another club, as he has a great CV. I am not sure how good they would be without him

Seems a lot of sides struggling with funding, I wonder if FFP is having an impact? We hear it with the O’Shea transfer and we hear it with Berge (who as a minimum has to go for the €25m Sheff Utd paid Genk for him).

We must be in a really strong place given our squad is in place. Our rivals this season are weakening (Leeds especially), we have players to slot in if some go, and if we go up along with two fairly poor teams we won’t need to do as much buying like Ipswich are (badly) doing. I just expect half a dozen to go with another half a dozen loans and a couple of older incomings just to get a bit more experience and know how.

EDIT - just seen the Odobert thing

Was on my list of players we cannot sell, but I suppose my above post stands, for now.

This must be £30m+ in this market. Assuming that is the case then, whilst saddening, Amdouni, Benson and Zaroury between them can pick up the baton.

Let’s be honest - Odobert was the player we all assumed was being sold this summer (well, I certainly did).

Big test of Matt Williams is this, our wheeler dealer.

If Odobert goes for peanuts because of some clause, that is a deriliction of duty, we had been better off not buying him at all. If he goes for big money it is excellent player trading.

My worry is how fast it is. Surely we would try a bidding war if there was no contract clause involved?

If we get the kind of money it should take for Spurs to sign him quickly and seemingly out of nowhere, fair play. Cracking player but we can afford to lose one in those positions.

My guess is the fee be closer to 20m rather than 30m

But yet when we bought players who probably weren't good enough for the premier league, but good at this level, it was seen as a ridiculous strategy.
Bit of a difference between Ipswich and club that has spent 8 of the last ten years in the premier league

Doesn’t even help towards reducing the squad size this deal either because Odobert was one of those he didn’t need to be registered due to his age

Superb signing for Spurs. Criticise Kompany, rightly or wrongly, but he and his team brought in some young players who could go to the very top. Odobert is possibly at the front of that pack. Far too good for the Championship. But we'll be okay without him.

What makes you think this? Surely it’s a big fee as we bought him for £12m ish? 4 years left on his contract as well
