Odobert will be at the bare minimum, worth 40m to 50m in 2 or 3 seasons...

Another sweeping statement. Just what elements of his game have you seen to warrant such a Trump-style claim?

We will not sell Wilson Odobert in this transfer window at a profit.
Pin that on your wall, stick it in your calendar.

You always want to keep your better players, but you cannot argue with that fee. Great business. I'll hold my hands up and say I was on the more cynical side about Odobert, but he's got a big move there and will be interesting to see if he kicks on.
It doesn't matter who owns the club, we are not turning offers like that down.

Sounds like Spurs are briefing the lowest possible end of the deal and we’re briefing the highest. Either way, it puts any thought that we’d accept a low offer for him to bed.
These silly transfer PR games do beg the question as to why they don’t just release the full details of the deal in the first place.

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
I can’t understand the disappointment and even disbelief that we’re selling Odobert. Our board have made no secret about their business plan to invest in young talent, give them a platform to play/develop and then sell them on for a profit. It’s a very quick turnaround and fast profit for odobert and from the players point of view he’s playing for Burnley in the championship and has the opportunity to play for one of the ‘top 6’ (although I hate that term), play in Europe and possibly put himself in contention for a place in the France squad.
Yes it would have been lovely to see him flourish in a claret and blue shirt for another season or two but sadly it’s not in our business model and probably not within our grasp as a club of our size.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Wilson play for the clarets and no doubt will enjoy watching the next spark of young talent that the club decides to invest in to replace him.

Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Ok so far in this window, we have already recouped nearly £50m (including £10m for VK), not bad to say we have only lost two players who would have been involved with the first team.
Certainly got top dollar, the model seems to be triple the money we initially paid out.
Muric - bought for £2.5m sold for £8m (plus add ons)
Odobert - bought for £10m sold for £30m (plus add ons) (plus sell on)
Whatever anyone thinks about Alan Pace and his team of businessmen/directors, they definitely know what they are doing.
There has been no panic or selling just to get rid, everything has been done methodically without affecting the team unduly and making sure we receive what players are worth in the market.
Obviously Odobert will be a miss but to receive £30m after relegation is a very good deal based mainly on potential and therefore very replaceable currently.

Again, happy to be proven wrong but these two comments don't prove your position right.
This transfer doesn't put his value at 40-50m within 2 years and nothing to say he goes on to further enhance his value so by all means enjoy me being wrong but youre not right yet.
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
We Paid 10m so he's not as wrong as you saying we will not sell him this season for a profit on top of saying we won't sell anyone for over 20m. Just hold your hands up pal, you're making yasel look silly..

No doubt they are working hard behind the scenes to find another gem to replace him.
Re: Summer 2024 Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
The only serious downside to this model I can foresee is that we will never be able to create heroes for our younger fans... The best thing about being a Burnley fan has always been those connections between us and the players, especially wingers who we love...
Under this model, we would have never have had heroes like David Eyres, Ted McMinn or Glen Little!... They would have been sold long before they could build a rapport with the fans...
For those connections to happen and for heroes to be born, they need to stay with us for a good 2 or 3 seasons at least... I can predict a haemorrhaging of our younger fans in the medium to long term, who have no player to look up to as an idol or role model because they are just not here long enough, especially the flair players!

Sadly, this is the reality of modern football. It's about striking that perfect balance between buying players for development + sale and maintaining team continuity. Checketts alluded to this per MtB2 - "Who are our 5 guys to see out the project?"BigChaCha wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2024 11:54 amThe only serious downside to this model I can foresee is that we will never be able to create heroes for our younger fans... My advice to parents would be: don't rush to get the names of our best young players on the back of your kid's shirts, especially if the player is in their second or third season with the club.

Club literally advise the last paragraph at every new shirt launch. Yet you still get fans of clubs moaning on social media that their kids favourite player has left after getting their name on the shirt. That'll be the second time you've virtue signalled that without any evidence. Is that the answer for everyone who performs at a disgraceful level for 8 months now? Like always though I'll hold my hands up and apologise if I'm wrong but I think it's a dangerous road to go down where we just immediately assign TERRIBLE form to a possible mental health issue.
What am I giving it big ones about exactly? I've admitted I've got it wrong and I'm happy to do so - pleasantly surprised even - but since we're calling out things that are wrong I will do the same.
